Narrative Statement 1

The first artifact I have chosen is my student-centered lesson on instrument families for

SED 3330. I learned how to make lessons more student-centered and how to make students more

engaged in the lesson. I really enjoyed teaching this lesson, and my classmates had a fun time

participating in it. This lesson reflects my best work because I received a perfect score on my

evaluation, and I put a large amount of effort into making the lesson engaging and interactive for

students. The department of music learning objective this assignment falls under is: “The

competent music teacher understands and is able to apply pedagogical knowledge and skills

appropriate to the teaching of music. For this lesson, I applied the pedagogical knowledge I

learned about student-centered instruction to this lesson by having students work in groups and

discuss their ideas with their classmates.

The second article I have chosen is the written portion of my Comprehensive

Musicianship IV exam. I learned how to analyze and identify the harmonic and melodic content

of a concerto. I analyzed the form of the piece, wrote a Roman numeral analysis, and identified

schemata used in the piece. This assignment reflects my best work because I went above and

beyond by writing very detailed responses in the written section. My instructor told me I wrote

the most out of anyone in the class, and he ended up giving me a 120% on this exam. I was

extremely proud of myself because of the amount of effort I put into this exam. The department

of music learning objective this assignment falls under is: “Demonstrate an intellectual and aural

understanding of the basic structural elements of music through the use of the basic vocabulary

of music.” For this assignment, I analyzed the structure of the concerto and described the

structure using musical vocabulary.

 The third article I have chosen is my music history examination over the Classical era. I

learned about important figures, important compositions, instruments, and musical elements of

the Classical era. This exam reflects my best work because I responded to most of the questions

accurately, and I received a 93%. I took detailed notes during class and studied very hard for this

exam. The department of music learning objective this assignment falls under is: “Understand

and analyze the role of music within a variety of cultures and historical periods, its impact on

society, and its stylistic interpretation.” During the unit for this exam, I learned about the role of

music in the West during the Classical era, the impact of music on society at the time, and

stylistic elements of music from the Classical era.
