NOTES:

Viewing is an active process of comprehending visual media, such as in television and

online platform: advertising images, films, diagrams, symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings,
sculpture and paintings.

Viewing helps youunderstand the message by seeking and checking understanding. It is

classified according to its purpose and type of information presented. The classification of viewing is
called genres of viewing.

There are five genres of viewing: news flash, weather report, internet-based program,
movie trailer, and documentary.

When there are current issues that the news organizations like ABS-CBN, GMA, and CNN feel
the warrant of interrupting their scheduled programming in television, news flash is aired. News
organizations alert us that what to follow on a certain television program important.

Another genre is weather report, which is a part of an entire news program that updates and
foretells weather conditions on a specific area. Weather forecasts are made by collecting data about
the current state of the atmosphere at a given place. When you wanted to know the weather for the
next day, you could watch the news program’s weather report to be updated.

Internet-based program also provides the viewers informative shows that can be accessed
through websites using internet connection. Netflix, iWant TV, and many more internet-based
programs provide shows that are highly dependent to the internet. It would also require accessing
through desktop computers, laptops, and smart phones.

Often times, when there are upcoming movies, there are series of selected shots that are
shown in television or internet. As these movie trailers attract you because of its exciting, funny, or
noteworthy parts of the film, these are usually short to avoid spoilers.

Finally, a documentary is a genre of viewing that is based on research. You can usually see it
in a very long duration. As it is lengthy, it has the ability to bring us a broader, more deeply engaged
and wider view of the current issues.

4. Which of these words are singular? Which are plural?

5. What do you need to remember about subjects and verbs in sentences?

A subject is a part of a sentence that contains the person, place, thing or idea performing the action
in a sentence.
In the sentences above, the underlined words documentary, news flash, and reports are
the subject of each sentence while the boxed words contains, teaches, are and is written are called
verbs.
Verbs are the action words in a sentence that describe what the subject is doing. Some verbs
can function as main verbs or helping verbs also called an auxiliary verb.
Basic Rule on Subject – Verb Agreement
• Subjects and verbs must agree in number.
A singular subject needs a singular verb; a plural subject needs a plural verb.

Ms. Smith is a doctor by profession. Good leaders are open-minded.

World Health Organization (WHO) advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the
virus
Senior citizens appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.
Way to go! You have just finished learning the basic rule of English Grammar. Below are extracted
sentences from the summary about “My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken”. Read the sentences carefully and
discover rules in the subject-verb agreement. After studying each rule and example, compose your own
sentence following the rule and write it on the line.

1. Kiko holds both wings of the chicken but the chicken become still.

Kiko is the subject in the sentence and Kiko is singular noun so the verb “hold” is in s-form.

Rule #1: The s-form of the verb is used with singular nouns or pronouns used as a subject.
The sentences should be in the present tense.

Another example: The lawyer appears before the judge in behalf of the
defendant.

The subjects in the sentence are “brother and I”, so it means the subject are plural and the verb
that follows is “leave” which is just in its base form.

Therefore, Rule #2: when the subject is plural, the base form of the verb should
be used.

Another example: We want to be famous actors and actresses.

2. Everybody in the cockpit startles at the unique chicken.

Everybody is the subject in the sentence and it is followed by the verb startles, so..

Rule #3 is when the subject is in an indefinite pronoun, the verb must be in s-form.

Example: In this crisis, nobody wants to see every person struggling.

3. The news about the chicken immediately awakens the barrio.

The subject is “news” and the verb that follows is “awakens”.

Rule #4: The s-form of the verb is used with nouns plural in form but singular in meaning.

4. The committee evaluates the rules to be implemented in the organization. (Committee is

taken as one unit.)

The “committee” is the subject in the sentence and the verb “evaluates” is in s-form because..

THE COLLEGE OF MAASIN “NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA” ENGLISH 7 S.Y. 2020-2021 Q1-MODULE2

Rule #5 is to use the s-form of the verb for collective nouns and pronouns. Collective nouns
refer to groups of persons or things that are acting as one unit are singular.

However, collective nouns referring to groups of persons or things that are acting as individual
members are plural in form. The base form of the verb is used.

The committee have different opinions on the matter.

5. Here comes the Teniente del Barrio to help us.

The subject here is the “Teniente del Barrio”, introduced by here and as what you see the verb
“comes” before the subject is in s-form because the subject is singular.

Rule #6: When the sentence is introduced by here or there, the verb agrees with the subject
that follows.

Examples:

There goes the most dedicated secretary I have ever met.

v
There go the most dedicated workers I have in the office.
V

6. Both Kiko and his brother try different ways to confirm the chicken’s gender.

The subjects are Kiko and his brother, it means the subject is plural and are introduced by
“both” and followed by the verb “try” (in base form).

Rule #7: The base form of the verb is used with both, many, several, and few.

Example: Many call them goddesses of beauty.

7. “I know how I can prove to you that this is a rooster.”, says Kiko.

The subject in the sentence is presented by the singular pronoun “I” and followed by the verb “know”
in base form.

Rule #8: The base form is used with pronouns I and you.

Examples:

I study and read the modules even when I’m at home.

NOTES:
When we immersed ourselves in viewing, it is very important that we censor what we watch,
whether in television or in the internet.
Viewing is more substantial and effective when we consider the best information that creates
value. If we responsibly select what we view, we can filter information that is relevant for our purposes
of viewing: entertainment and information.
Now, more than ever, we need to educate ourselves about important issues and finding varied
and reliable information sources. Knowing the essential and truthful information among the recent
events across the globe, it is very important that we check the quality sources of information about
our world and what is happening in it.
These genres of viewing provide an opportunity to understand and connect with the world.
Further, they are also a great way to gather together with friends to watch and engage around the
important issues of our times.
Whether you watch through television or internet, talking about them together in person is
equally important. With social media channels at our fingertips 24/7, these genres of viewing remind
us of the real people on the opposite side of an issue and different conditions in which we live.
