Good day FUTURE EDUCATORS!

I hope you are doing fine and enjoying life in the midst of the pandemic.

After learning different teaching ang learning materials and approaches, we will study the last lesson
which is about PLANNING for TEACHING and TEACHING PRACTICES.

Read, understand and appreciate the importance of this topic.

CHAPTER 10 – PLANNING FOR TEACHING

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

It is not teaching; it is a necessary condition to teaching. We cannot teach when the classes are
inattentive, worse when they are unruly. A classroom managers manage resources to facilitate learning.
These resources include the 3 MS : MOVEMENT , MATERIALS , and MAN . These are time, teaching
materials and physical features like desks and tables and the learners themselves.

PRINCIPLES in CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

1. Consistent, proactive discipline is the crux of effective classroom management. Prevention is better
that cure.

2. Establish routines for all daily task and needs

3. Orchestrate smooth transitions and continuity of momentum throughout the day.

4. Strike a balance between variety and challenge in students’ activities

5. As classroom managers, be aware of all actions and activities in the classroom

6. Resolve minor inattention and disruption before they become major disruptors

7. Reinforce positive behavior

8. Treat minor disturbance calmly

9. Work out a physical arrangement of chair that facilitates an interactive teaching-learning process

10. Make good use of every instructional moment.

Minimize discipline time to maximize instructional time.

SCHEME of WORK - is a plan that defines work to be done in the classroom. Involving learners in
defining a scheme of work, whether for a short project or a long course, is an important step towards
motivation and involvement. Before starting a project, a group works on defining a scheme of work for
it.

IMPORTANCE of SCHEME of WORK – It is usually an interpretation of a specification or syllabus and can

be used as a guide throughout the course to monitor progress against the original plan. Scheme of work
can be shared with students so that they have an overview of their course. Its an overview or a long-
term plan from what you aim to teach in a particular subject across a term or an academic year.

LESSON PLAN – is a teachers detailed description of the course of instruction or “learning trajectory” for
a lesson. A daily lesson plan is developed by a teacher to guide class learning. Details will vary depending
on the preference of the teacher, subject being covered and the needs of the student.

COMPONENTS of EFFECTIVE LESSON PLAN

1. Necessary Materials

2. Clear objectives

3. Background knowledge

4. Direct instruction

5. Student practice

6. Closure

7. Demonstration of learning (Quick Assessment)

TYPES of LESSON PLAN

1. FIVE STEP LESSON PLAN – compose of the ff. components : anticipatory set, instruction, guided
practice, closure or assessment and independent practice.

2. Five E lesson plan

3. Weekly lesson plan

4. Unit plan

5. Inquiry Based lesson plan

IMPORTANCE of LESSON PLANNING

1. It can help teacher to be well prepared and be aware of what he/she intends on teaching the students

2. It can help the teacher focus more in the basic knowledge first then take the students towards the
next step

3. The teacher will never be stammer or mumble during the lecture because of the timely preparation of
the lesson

The SEVEN STEPS of LESSON PLAN are objective, motivation, intro to new material/directed lesson
sequence, guided practice, independent practice, alternate and supplementary activities and
assessment

LESSON NOTE – is step by step guide into a specific lesson made by the teacher before the lesson. It is
the best tool for documenting the flow of a lesson and its impact on student. Lesson note let you track
who is talking to whom, when and for how long, and let you jot handwritten notes about what is being
said and what students are doing. Lesson note can also record photos and student work.

TEACHING or LEARNING AID – is a device designed to help people understand and remember more
quickly and more sustainably – to keep it in their memory so that they can easily recall it. The pictures,
diagrams, rhymes, mnemonics are examples of learning aids.

CHARACTERISTICS of GOOD TEACHING AIDS

1. Large enough to be seen by the student

2. Meaningful and they always stand to serve a useful purpose

3. They are up to the mark and up to date in every aspect

LOGBOOK – is a record of important events in the management, operation and navigation. It is a way to
record and keep tract the events in your classroom. It is an important management tools that can be
used in a variety of ways such as recording tardy students entering the classroom, communication with
students, parents and student-teacher conference.
TEACHING PRACTICE for the 21ST CENTURY TEACHER

1. Maintain good communication skills

2. Getting students engagement

3. Use humor

4. Act don’t react

5. Be clean and precise in your instructions

6. Give room to individualized learning

7. Positive feedback

8. Involve students in decision making

9. Use peer learning

10. Love your subject/job

TEN BEST PRACTICES of HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHERS

1. Provide frequent and timely feedback

2. Value parental/ familial involvement

3. Sidestep the comfort zone

4. Offer second chances/clean slates

5. Be resourceful

6. Make learning active

7. Be an advocate

8. Pursue lifelong learning

9. Encourage discussion

10. Keep a positive outlook

MICRO TEACHING – is a technique aiming to prepare teacher candidate to the real classroom setting. It
is also a teaching technique especially used in teacher’s pre-service education to train them
systematically by allowing them to experiment main teacher behavior. It is a new innovative program for
teachers which enhances their classroom attitude and behavior.

PRINCIPLES of MICRO TEACHING

to improve its reach in the all-around development of the teachers:

1. One skill at one time – training one skill to master

2. Small scale content – limit the content

3. Practice makes a man perfect – master skill needs practice

4. Experiments – more experiment to be conducted

5. Instantaneous feedbacks – from teacher-pupil and supervisor

6. Self-evaluation opportunities – analysis of mistakes

7. Continuous effort – acquiring and mastering skills is a slow and ongoing process

CONCEPT of MICRO TEACHING

1. Teaching in its real form but with a minimum concept

2. The exercise which is designed focuses mostly in the basic teaching skills with the help of feedback
based on the knowledge and information of the student learning level

3. The teaching is conducted for students who are from different backgrounds and their intellectual
activities

4. Monitoring the micro-teaching exercises conducted in the classroom

5. Enabling the prospective teachers to learn effective teaching skills

ADVANTAGES of MICRO TEACHING

1. It focuses on sharpening and developing specific teaching skills and eliminating errors

2. It enables understanding of behaviors important in classroom teaching

3. It increases the confidence of the learner teacher

4. It enables projection of model instructional skills

DISADVANTAGES of MICRO TEACHING

1. Lack of proper planning conveys an undesired and unrelated concept

2. The teaching strategy utilized in the microteaching session to teach a small group of students fails in
some situations while handling a large group of students

OBJECTIVES of MICRO TEACHING

1. To enable teacher trainees to learn and assimilate new teaching skills under controlled conditions

2. To enable teacher trainees to master a number of teaching skills

3. To enable teacher trainees to gain confidence in teaching

SKILLS in MICRO TEACHING

1. Skills in introducing

2. Skills in questioning

3. Skills in explaining

4. Skill of blackboard writing

5. skills of achieving closure

SINGLE LESSON TEACHING – a lesson is a teaching and learning episode that usually takes place in a
single class period. A lesson is carefully planned to address one or more student learning goals.

IMPORTANCE of PRACTICE TEACHING – good teaching practice is a key influence on student learning -
desire outcome and primary goal of higher educational institutions. Teachers strive to meet the
principles of good practice in an effort to provide the best learning experience for their students
EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM PRACTICES

1. TEACHER CLARITY – the purpose and learning goals

2. CLASSROOM DISCUSSION_formatively assess how well students are grasping new content and
concepts

3. FEEDBACK – give opportunities to provide feedback to the teacher to adjust the learning process,
materials and instruction

4. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT – spend amount of time on formative evaluation as they do on summative

assessment

5. META COGNITIVE STRATEGIES – provide students with time and space to be aware of their own
thinking. META COGNITION is the ability to use prior knowledge to plan a strategy for approaching
learning task, take necessary steps to problem solve, reflect on and evaluate results and modify one’s
approach as needed.

BLOCK TEACHING PRACTICE – It is a style of teaching where lectures, tutorials and other forms of
teaching are provided in an intensive block, sometimes as short as 1 week and student learning is
compressed, typically with students studying only one course at a time.

IMPORTANT OBJECTIVES of TEACHER EDUCATION

- Imparting an adequate knowledge of the subject matter

- Equipping the prospective teachers with necessary pedagogical skills

- Enabling the teacher to acquire understanding of child psychology

- Develop proper attitudes towards teaching

BENEFITS of SCHEDULING – students have more time for reflection and less information to process over
the course of a school day. Research found students retain

BENEFITS of TEACHING PRACTICE –

Teachers, when planning appropriately, include practice time for students. Students in all grades benefit
from practice because it deepens their understanding and increases familiarity with the material.
Similarly, drills are useful to reinforce and practice more role knowledge and skills.
SOME IDEAS to HELP YOU TEACH a BLOCK SCHEDULE :

- Add something from everyday. This is the first thing any block trainer will tell you.

- Varied instruction is now your friend

- Expect your timing to be off

- Commit to review time every period

ADVANTAGES of BLOCK TEACHING – you are learning everything at once rather than being taught
something one week and then going over it in a seminar 2 weeks later when it is less fresh in your mind.
Give a lot more time to voice concerns/opinions, discuss issues.

BLOCK SCHEDULING is meant to address those lost teachable moments that occur when students are
shuffled to six classes a day. Sometimes, called “modular scheduling”, this approach divides the school
day into longer class periods, sending students to fewer classes each day.

THINGS TO DO:

CHAPTER 10 – PLANNING FOR TEACHING

A. WORDS to KNOW :

1. crux-a main or central feature of an argument

2. orchestrate-to organize or plan something that is complicated

3. instantaneous –happening very quickly:happening in an instant

4. transition-a change from one state or condition to another

B. GUIDE QUESTION :

1. Effective classroom managers have “eyes on the back of their heads”. Explain your answer.

It is another way to say that effective classroom manager should see or notice something that is behind
him or her. Classroom manager should know everything that is happening inside the classroom or even
in every student. Teacher should be able to detect what is going on all around one, even beyond one’s
field of vision and be able to sense what is going on behind or outside of one’s field of vision.

2. How important is lesson plan in teaching? Can you teach even without lesson plan?

Lesson plan can help teacher to be well prepared and be aware of what he/she intends on teaching the
students .It can help the teacher focus more in the basic knowledge first then take the students towards
the next step. The teacher will never be stammer or mumble during the lecture because of the timely
preparation of the lesson.

3. How effective is micro teaching among learners?Name some advantages and disadvantages of micro
teaching.

Micro teaching had been effectively conducted in many pre-service teaching programmes. It trains them
systematically by allowing them to experiment main teacher behavior. It is a new innovative program for
teachers which enhance their classroom attitude and behavior. It focuses on sharpening and developing
specific teaching skills and eliminating errors. It enables understanding of behaviors important in
classroom teaching and increases the confidence of the learner teacher. Additionally, it enables
projection of model instructional skills, these are advantages of microteaching However, there are
disadvantages of microteaching. Micro teaching was lack of proper planning that conveys an undesired
and unrelated concept and teaching strategy utilized in the microteaching session to teach a small group
of students fails in some situations while handling a large group of students

4. What are the strengths of block teaching practice?

If you are in block teaching process you will learn everything at once rather than being taught something
one week and then going over it in a seminar 2 weeks later when it is less fresh in your mind. Give a lot
more time to voice concerns/opinions, discuss issues. This is opportunity for students to give feedback
on their learning during the teaching period. This allows learning to be more comprehensive on the part
of the learners. Also, planning is easier for teachers.

C. Activity:

Why should students undergo teaching practice?

Teaching practice is a way for teachers to incorporate in the classroom. This allows students to take part
in the discussions of a topic to their fellow learners. This is similar to peer tutoring, where every student
can take part in sharing information and insights on a particular subject. This is a good practice because
it gives the learners the opportunity to deepen their understanding towards a particular topic, as they
share their knowledge about it. Moreover, they got to expose themselves with different ideas, hence
giving them a variety of ways on how to view a particular topic. Teaching practice may also effectively
serve its purpose if it’s regularly facilitated or guided by the teacher.
