1 Warm-up
Do you have a pet? Why/why not?

2 Types of animals
Match each animal to its type.

1. a frog a. a bird
2. a butterfly b. a mammal
3. a lion c. an amphibian
4. a snake d. an insect
5. an eagle e. a reptile

Now with a partner, think about where these animals live. Think about some different animals and also
say where they live. Use the words below for different habitats.

deserts polar regions temperate forests freshwater lakes and rivers
Example: Lions live in the grasslands of Africa.

3 Benefits of animals
Match the two halves of the sentences.

4 Describing animals
Look at the adjectives below. Put them into the correct category.

aggressive domestic fluffy furry

Work in pairs. Student A, choose an animal. Student B, describe the animal using some adjectives.
Change roles and repeat the activity.

Example: Owls are shy, nocturnal birds.

5 Practice (Part 2)
Work in pairs. Take turns to answer the cue cards below. Try to use some VOCABULARYabulary from
this lesson. Remember, you have 1 minute to take notes and 1-2 minutes for talking.

Describe your favourite animal. You should say:


- what type of animal it is
- what it looks like
- how it lives.
And explain why this is your favourite animal.

Describe an interesting animal. You should say:


- what it is
- what you know about this animal
- where this animal is found
And give any unusual facts about this animal.
