Message from the President

Dear Friends,
Coming as it does after Deepawali, the festival of lights,
this News Letter brings to you several developments in
the Alumni Association. The most important one is the
increase in the membership of the Alumni -- now it stands
at 3137. The number of members on the Vidalaya Alumni
Internet Address Registry (www.srkv.org) stands at nearly
300. We are glad that our former students remember their
Alma Mater.
The second important development is the enlargement of
the Alumni’s Executive Committee to include one young
alumnus (teaching staff) from each of the institutions of
the Vidyalaya. So now there are 18 Executive Committee
Members. Their names are given inside. The summer camp
for students, which was to be held in April or so this year
but could not be held for various reasons, will in all
probability be held in the summer of 2003. Further, a zonal
alumni meet is to be held in Erode this year, inviting our
former students from Gobichettipalayam, Kumarapalayam,
Perundurai, Bhavani, Vijayamangalam, Pallipalayam and
Kavundapadi.
So, while the activities initiated already by the alumni in
the past are going on fairly well, we are also trying hard
to mobilize more members. Our hope is that this
membership drive will finally fructify by way of the members
themselves starting some service activity in their
respective areas, according to their individual or group
capacity.
This year we shall be honouring 3 alumni, as mentioned
inside. We request as many of you as possible to attend
the function on 16.12.2002. Finally, we also invite you all
to the Gurupuja on 5.1.2003.

Dr. P.K.Aiyasamy (Educational Service)
Thiru P.K.Aiyasamy was born in a lower
middle class farm family on August,
23,1928. He had his elementary
education in the District Board
Elementary School in his native village,
Palathurai. He joined SRKV High School
in 1940 and completed SSLC in 1946.
It was in this year Vivekananda College
was started in Mylapore, Chennai, and
he was one among the four students
who had the fortune of studying in Vivekananda College as advised
by Rev.Ayya Avl.
This period was also a memorable one, for it provided the extraordinary
opportunities of meeting Omandur Rama Swamy Reddiar, Thiru
Bhakthavatchalam, NMR.Subbraman and other political luminaries.
On successfully completing the Intermediate Course Aiyasamy
joined B.Sc.(Ag.) course in the Agrl. College, Coimbatore, passing
out in 1951 securing very high ranks. After a short spell he
underwent Diploma Course in Horticulture (D.I.H.) securing distinction
in two subjects. He served in many districts of Tamil Nadu and
his academic interest culminated in obtaining Master of Science

in Agricultural Economics in 1965. Pursuant to this he served
as the Assistant Project Officer, Intensive Agricultural District
Programme (IADP) Thanjavur and under a Ford foundation grant
he was deputed for higher studies in the Minnesota University
USA. Here again his academic accomplishments was very high
securing “A” grades in many courses and obtained Master Degree
in Public Administration. On returning to India he served in the
Faculty of Agricultural Economics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
As required by University he also completed the Doctorate in
Agricultural Economics (Ph.D.) in 1978. His field of specialization
are Resource Economics, Agricultural Labour, Rural Development
and Irrigation Economics. He retired as Professor and Head
Department of Agricultural Economics in May 1986. As per the
wishes of Ayya he joined IARD in 1986 and continued till 1989.
He has guided over 80 Post Graduate Scholars leading to M.Sc.(Ag.),
and Ph.D. After retirement he served as a Consultant to the Swedish
International Development Authority (SIDA), Ford Foundation, World
Bank, government of India and a few other Agencies. He has
to his credit 8 books, 40 research papers and 14 Departmental
publications. He authored one chapter in the publication on "Green
Revolution Revisited" by the International Food Policy Research
Institute, Washington. On super annuation he extended his services
to a Swedish University for undertaking research studies in Irrigation
Management. He has visited USA, Japan, Philippines, Sri Lanka,

Dr.S.Purushothaman M.Sc., M.Ed., Ph.D.,
Dr.S.Purushothaman has successfully completed 40 years
of service devoting to Teaching, Research & Extension in
Higher Education. An old student of Ramakrishna Mission
Vidyalaya (SRKV) School & College, he served as Professor
& Vice Principal in the Post-Graduate Autonomous college
of Education (SRKV) Coimbatore-20.
He later became Director, Academic Staff College & Professor
& Head of the Department of Educational Technology,
Bharathidasan University, Trichy.
He served the Bharathidasan University in different posts
and positions for more than a decade. He has undergone
Training on the Advanced Techniques of Educational
Television at the University of London in England. He was
a visiting professor to several universities in Germany
sponsored by the Govt. of Germany under DAAD scheme.
He has visited several advanced countries and taken part
in the International Conferences. He is the author of several
books in his field of specialization.
He has published several research papers and is the author
of several books in his field of specialization. He has
published several research papers in the leading journals
of Educational Research in India. He was the Chief Editor
of the “Journal of Research in Educational Media” which
has international circulation. He was the Founder President
of the “Indian Council of Research in Educational Media”.
He has organized several National Seminars on various
themes related to Educational Technology. He has presented
papers and chaired sessions in various National Seminars
all over the country.
He has served as an expert in various committees constituted
by the national agencies like UGC, NCERT, NAAC, etc.
His parents were freedom fighters and have received Tamra
Patras from the Government of India.
He is now working as the Principal of the SNMV College

 Some important activities of the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya from
4th September 2001 to 24th August 2002
A Play Festival was jointly conducted by the Vidyalaya High School
and Swami Shivananda Hr. Sec. School (English Medium) on
27 September 2001. A Villupattu by Perundurai Sri Velavan and
party, was organized for the benefit of the students and staff of the
Vidyalaya on 11 September 2001, on the occasion of Mahakavi
Bharathiar’s birthday.
The Carnatica Archival Centre, Chennai, launched a specially
designed Indian music, dance and cultural programme entitled
“Parichaya”, on 10 October 2001. Eminent musicians such as
M.S. Sowmya, K.N.Shashikiran, Palghat Sriram, and dancers such
as Lavanya Shankar demonstrated the basics of classical music
and dance to the students to creat awareness among them about
our heritage.
The All-Vidyalaya Gandhi Jayanthi literary competitions were held
on 11 October 2001. The Kalaimagal Vizha was celebrated on
22, 23 and 24 September with the usual Iyal, Isai and Natakam
programmes. On the Iyal day, Sri Narai Nellaiappan spoke.
Smt. V.Jayashree and Smt.V.Vijayashree sang on the Isai day. On
the Natakam day, each institution of the Vidyalaya put up a thematic
skit/cultural performance for about 10 minutes.
The annual inter-school Gandhi Jayanthi Competitions were held
on 9 Nov 2001 at the Vidyalaya Town Centre. 174 students from
21 schools participated. A function was organized by the
All-Vidyalaya Alumni Association to observe the 98th memorial day
of Ayya Sri T.S. Avinashilingam on 21-11-2001. Two eminent former
students of the Vidyalaya, Dr. K Kulandaivel (for contribution in
the field of education), and Sri M Palaniswamy (in the field of social
service) were honoured on the occasion.
Kalarippayattu - an ancient martial art was demonstrated to the
studends by Sri T.Sudhakaran Gurukkal and party on 26 December
2001. The Kalpataru Day, in which Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna is
said to have bestowed his special grace on devotees at the
Cossipore Garden House, Calcutta, was observed with solemnity
both in the Vidyalaya campus and the Town Centre on 1 January
2002.
The Secretaries and Principals of the Colleges of the Vidyalaya
attended a function organized by the Association of the Management
of Private Colleges on 28 December 2001 to felicitate Rev. Fr.
Dr.S.Ignacimuthu, S.J., Vice Chancellor, Bharathiar University, on
his being awarded “Doctor of Science” by the University of Madras.
The Secretaries and Pricipals of the Colleges of the Vidyalaya
attdended a two day State-level conference organized by the
Association of the Management of Private Colleges on the “Role of
Stakeholders in Achieving Excellence in Higher Education in the
Knowledge Era” on 4 January 2002. Guru Puja, the public celebration
of the birthday of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna, was observed on
6 January 2002. All the students and staff of the Vidyalaya
enthusiastically participated in the various activities, and ensured
that the celebration was a great success. Swami Ashutoshananda
of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, Sri V.K.Subburaj, I.A.S.,
Secretary to the School Department, Government of Tamil Nadu,
Sri V.K.Lakshmanan, M.L.A., and Dr.B.K.Krishnaraj Vanavarayar,
Chairman, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, spoke on the
occasion.
The Birthday of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi was celebrated with
due solemnity at the Vidyalaya and Town Centre on 5 January
2002. The National Youth Day celebrations 2002, to mark the
birthday of Swami Vivekananda according to the Gregorian
Calendar, was organized by the Maruthi college of Physical
Education on 10 January 2002. Sri K.Sokkalingam, I.P.S.,
Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District, addressed the youth
and flagged off the rally. About a thousand students from various
schools in the Coimbatore City participated.
The Alumni Association of the Maruthi College of Physical Education
conducted a workshop on “Current Trends in Tracks and field” on
17 and 18 January 2002. Smt. Sulochana, Chief Educational Officer,
Coimbatore District, inaugurated the workshop, in which more than
100 alumni took part. The Republic Day Celebrations were held at
the Maruthi College Grounds on 26 January 2002. Swami
Atmaramanda, Secretary of the Vidyalaya Institutions, took the
salute, hoisted the National Flag, and addressed the students and
staff.
The National Youth Day Celebration, to mark the 140th Birthday of
Swami Vivekananda, was organized by the Vidyalaya Polytechnic
on 31st Jan 2002. Thiru K.Sokkalingam, Superintendent of Police,
Coimbatore District, was the Chief Guest. 1500 students from the
Vidyalaya and nearby schools participated. The Alumni Association
of the polytechnic conducted a meeting of its members on 17th
Feb 2002. 275 students, including the students of the current
outgoing batch participated.
The Play Festival, to commemorate the Birth Centenary of
Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna, was organised at the Nehru Stadium,
Coimbatore, on 1st March 2002. Sri N.Muruganandam, Collector,
Coimbatore District, was the Chief Guest. 2000 Students from 12
schools took part in the festival. Another Play Festival was held in
the Maruthi College on 6th March 2002. 4000 students from
52 schools participated.
The 167th Birth Anniversary of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna was
celebrated with due solemnity on 16th March 2002 with Puja, Homa,
Bhajans, Akhanda Archana, etc. The Graduation Ceremony in

 honour of the graduating students of the Colleges in the Vidyalaya
was held on 21st Mach 2002. Swami Shivamayanandaji, Assistant
Secretary of the Sri Ramakrishna Math and Mission, delivered the
Annual Day Address.
Another Graduation Ceremony in honour of the graduating students
of the post-martic students of the Vidyalaya was held on 28th
March 2002. Swami Satyapriyananda, Secretary, Vivekananda
College, Chennai, delivered the Graduation Day Address. The
Carnatica Music and Fine Arts Centre, Chennai, inaugurated vocal
and instrumental classes for the students of the Vidyalaya on 28th
March 2002. Sri K.N.Sasikiran and Chitra Veena Ganesh gave
preliminary lessons in classical music to interested students. The
Prize Presentation Ceremony of the All-Vidyalaya Inter-Institutions
Sports and Games was held on 4th April 2002. Dr.A.Pushparajan,
Director of Physical Education, Bharathiar University, gave away
the prizes. The Alumni Day of the Institute of Agriculture and Rural
Development was held on 20th April 2002, Sri P.Rama Chandran,
Director, ASETI, delivered the Alumni Day Address. A Felicitation
Ceremony was held on 30th April 2002 to honour Dr.K.Kulandaivel
on his being appointed Chancellor of the Avinashilingam Deemed
University for Women. All the Heads of the Institutions of the
Vidyalaya garlanded Dr.K.Kulandaivel and expressed their best
wishes. A three-day Spiritual Retreat was held for devotees from
all over Tamilnadu on 10, 11 and 12 May 2002. About 250 devotees
and 6 Swamis attended the Retreat which included speeches,
meditation, bhajans, interactive sessions and cultural programmes.
Sri N.Muruganandam, Collector, Coimbatore District, laid the
foundation stone for the Venkatakrishnan Indoor Basket Ball Stadium
of the Shivananda Sports School on 10th June 2002.

to the University of Minnesota and Cornell University.
Since 1995, his interest has been to do Social Service to rural
community. He has organized free eye camps in four villages,
co-ordinating with the services of Sankara Eye Hospital and Arvind
Hospital, benefiting eye treatment and operation for over 200 rural
poor persons. Currently he is involved with a NGO extending
development services in elementary education, health and sanitation,
tree planting, eco-awareness, computer education and rural
employment. His orientation with Vidyalaya ideals culminated in
offering free services in imparting skills and knowledge in Yogic
Sadans - with particular emphasis on Asanas, Pranayama, Meditation
and Japa besides chanting of slokas and group singing of devotional
songs. So far 17 courses have been offered to the students and
staff of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Government College
of Technology and Kovai Medical Centre Institutions besides
residents in the neighborhood. More than 500 participants, mostly
family women, got benefited by this course.
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University campus did not have a
temple for over 75 years. Mobilising the innate desire and services
of all categories of personnel and serving as a President, Aiyasamy
was responsible to construct a temple for Lord Gnana Vinayaga
in 1982.
The sacred seed sown in the prayer hall of Vidyalaya has its
own indomitable strength to radiate its effulgence.
