PROJECT TITLE:

CONSTRUCTION OF MAHARLIKA PLAZA FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH ENHANCEMENT

Brief Description:

Upi is one of the relatively peaceful municipalities in Maguindanao Province where the tri-people
consisting of Tedurays (Lumad), Moro, and settlers co-exist harmoniously.

Plaza Maharlika was established in Nuro Upi Maguindanao during the year 2018 using the Performance
Challenge Fund (PCF) for passing the Seal Of Good Local Governance. The plaza was culturally inspired as
can be seen through the sculptures which portray the tri people who live in harmony despite diversity.
These sculptures were made by the famous artist from Davao City Mr. Ray Mudjahid Ponce Millan better
known as Kublai Millan.

The main objective of establishing the said project is to increase the economic growth inside the
Municipality. The development and rehabilitation of the Maharlika Plaza will entice people to visit or
gather at the plaza. As a result, business owners will also be persuaded to set up business near the area.
There is already ongoing construction of a commercial building near the plaza. This, in turn, will not only
enhance the economic growth of the Municipality but also the increase of tourism activities at the town
center.

The Maharlika plaza as the town center symbolizes unity as a venue where the tri-people of Upi can hold
activities together. To mention a few, such activities include the celebration of Day of Peace, Meguyaya
Festival, Trade Fairs, and other tourism promotion activities. The owners of small stores and
establishments around the plaza also benefited from its improvement as it increases their sales due to
an increase in customers. The LGU administration also plans to conduct concerts every Friday and
Saturday nights in front of the Maharlika Plaza. These activities will also invite people from neighboring
cities and municipalities to Visit Upi and further encourage economic activities. During these gatherings,
Upians have the opportunity to showcase their unique and native products as well as their beautiful and
colorful cultures. With the current situation, these activities shall strictly observe the minimum health
standards like wearing face masks, face shields, and physical distancing.
