Volleyball: Service
Let’s Think and Act Now!

LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

Let’s recall!
1. What are the things you should remember in doing dig in Volleyball?
2. What fitness component/s are necessary to execute a good dig?

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

While learning the fundamental skills in Volleyball, with practice, you can
become a great player.
Serving is the method of putting the ball in play over the net by striking it
with the hand. The most used service in Volleyball are underhand, overhand and
side arm serve.
Proper Mechanics in doing the underhand serve:
1. Stand facing the net with the left foot slightly forward and the weight on
the right foot.

14
2. Hold the ball with the left hand with the left arm across and a little in
front of the body and the ball resting on the
pads of the left fingers.
3. Step left foot forward, transferring the weight to
the front foot and at the same time; bring the
right arm back in a preparatory motion.
4. Swing the right hand forward and
contact the ball, just below the center.
5. The ball can be hit with an open hand
or with the fist either facing forward or sideward.
6. Follow through with the arm to ensure a smooth serve.
*Note: These directions are for a right-handed serve. For the left-handed serve,
reverse the position and movements.

Proper Mechanics in doing the Overhand Serve

1. Stand with the left foot in front and the left
side of the body turned somewhat toward the
net with the weight on both feet.
2. Hold the ball in the left hand directly in front
of the face.
3. Toss the ball straight up shifting the weight
to the back foot. The height of the toss is a
matter of choice, but from 3 to 5 ft. is
suggested.
4. Contact the ball with the open palm or with the fist above the shoulder
as the ball drops thus shifting the weight to the forward foot which can
take a short step forward.
* Note: An effective serve is one that has no spin-a floater. The directions are
for a right – handed serve. For the left-handed serve, reverse the position and
movements.
Sidearm Serve
-like the overhead serve, the sidearm serve is powerful and difficult to
receive. This serve goes over the net into a downward trajectory. ·
Proper Mechanics in doing the sidearm serve
1. Take a forward stride position behind the end line with the left side toward
the net.
2. Hold the ball with the left hand in front of the body and over or slightly
ahead of the left foot.

15
3. Bring the right arm which should be fully extended to approximately
shoulder level and shift weight to the rear foot.
4. Move the right arm forward to contact the ball with either the heel of the
hand or a closed fist.
5. Follow through in the direction in which the ball is to travel.

ACTIVITIES

“Service with a Pose”

In this activity you’re going to need the assistance of any of your capable
members of your family. After learning the proper mechanics in doing the service
in Volleyball, you are going to do it step by step (mimetics) by striking a pose (to
be caught by a camera) following the mechanics in doing the 3 service in
Volleyball.
• Make sure to do it step-by-step (in pictures)
• Follow the mechanics
• Organize your picture and post in on your activity notebook.

REMEMBER

The serve has an expected success rate that is 80 to 90 percent higher

than the other skills because the server tosses the ball to himself rather than
receiving the ball from another player. Equally important is the fact that the
serve is the first opportunity a team has to put the opponent at a disadvantage.
o The first contact that starts every rally is called a “serve”. The player
who serves is called the “server”. Less experienced players may serve
underhand with one closed fist.

o For competitive volleyball, there are three main types of overhand

serves: the floater, the topspin, and the jump serve.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Another issue or concern of teenagers is double standard morality that
gives the impression of men being superior to women. In as much as we would
like to practice gender equality, the rules for human conduct and human
appropriateness are not alike for the both sexes as practiced in most areas in
the Philippines.

Double standard morality is defined as:

1. A set of principles that applies differently and usually more rigorously
to one group of people or circumstances than to other especially.
2. A code of morale that applies more severe standards of sexual behavior
to women than to men.
3. It exists between men and women with regards to dating, virginity,
marriage, sexual abuse, harassment domestic violence and singleness.
Double standard morality can be eliminated gradually when:
1. We realize the value of everyone.
2. When we learn to respect each other worth.
3. Another concern of teenagers is about virginity. Virgin refers to a person
who has not had sexual intercourse; means a state of purity or inexperience.
Virginity – the state being naive, innocent, or inexperienced in a context
or never engaged in sexual intercourse.
Filipino culture about virginity is staying a virgin until marriage time.
There are three aspects to consider for remaining virgin
1. PHYSICALLY

Free from pregnancy and venereal disease.

Free from having choose on hurry-up wedding and an illegitimate
child.
2. EMOTIONALLY

• Free from exploitation by others.

• Free from guilt, doubt, disappointment and loss of reputation.

Abstinence – is the best decision one can make in safeguarding sexual

desire or appetite.
Sexual abstinence or sexual restraint is the practice of refraining from
some or all aspects of sexual activity.
