Colleagues,
What follows are four amendments proposed for the motion to create the Global Citizenship
Program. Each of the amendments cross references the relevant section of the GCP (for example,
I.A.4.)
Each amendment, in turn, will be presented for debate at the Faculty Assembly meeting on
Tuesday, 8 February. Those approved will be incorporated into the final document to be
circulated to all members of the Faculty Assembly for a vote.
Proposed Amendments to The Global Citizenship Program

I. Proposed Amendments to Skills Requirements (see item “a” in the italicized section on
restrictions following I.A.4). Two amendments have been proposed, both of which deal with the
concern that students address all five skills requirements in their degree program. Amendment
A. proposes that all students would complete all five skill requirements within the 18 credit hours
coded for “Breadth” (I.A. 1-4). Amendment B is proposed as a substitute to Amendment A.
Amendment B proposes that students can complete skills requirements in courses other than
those designated for the GCP, including courses in the student’s major.
Amendment A. “In completing the requirements listed in I.A., students must complete at least three
credit hours coded for each of the required skills.”

To be inserted in “Restrictions” under I.A.4 either at the conclusion of “a.” or as a

separate line item.
Submitted by Bruce Umbaugh
Substitute Amendment B.

“II. Skills Requirements

A. All students must complete three credit hours in courses coded for each of the
following skills:
1. Written Communication
2. Oral Communication
3. Critical Thinking
4. Intercultural Knowledge
5. Ethical Reasoning.
B. Students will complete this requirement primarily with courses in the GCP Breadth
Requirements in I.A. but may also complete it with appropriately coded courses within
their major, or within other coded courses not part of the GCP.
C. The Global Citizenship Program Committee will code additional courses appropriate
to the skill requirements to insure a wide range of opportunities for students to address
these skill requirements.”
To be inserted as a new Roman II following I. Breadth Requirements.

Submitted by the Faculty Senate.

II. Proposed Amendment to Require Integrative Courses within the GCP Breadth
Requirements:

“In completing the requirements listed in I.A., students must complete at least nine hours (from
among the 24 required) in courses intended to help students improve their abilities to integrate,
transfer, make connections among, and apply knowledge.”

This would be inserted as “d” under the Restrictions given in italics under I.A.4.

III. Proposed Amendment to Increase Required GCP Hours for Transfer Students from
27 to 30.
“GNST 1200 is only open to newly matriculated students. For students who transfer to Webster
University, three hours of the student's choice from all designated courses intended to help
students improve their abilities to integrate, transfer, make connections among, and apply
knowledge. may substitute for the GNST 1200 credit hours in the GCP requirements.”

To be inserted after Section III GNST 1200.

IV. Proposed Amendment to include Practical Experience Requirement (0 credits).

“Practical Learning Experience: Outside the context of instructional coursework, approved by

the student’s advisor, with self-assessment and documentation furnished by the student.
Experiences such as, but not limited to, internships, study abroad, language immersion, Model
