Caisson is a watertight retaining structure used, for example, to work on the foundations
of a bridge pier or for the construction of a concrete dam. These are constructed such that the
water can be pumped out, keeping the working environment dry. When piers are to be built using
an open caisson and it is not practical to reach suitable soil, friction pilings may be driven to
form a suitable sub-foundation. These piles are connected by a foundation pad upon which the
column pier is erected. Caissons are necessary for the construction of structures in complicated
deep foundation conditions. Construction of caissons involves unique construction methods due
to various characteristics like cost, constructability, resources and time. [1]
1. When the soil contains large boulders, which obstruct the penetration of piles.
2. When a massive substructure is required to extend to or below the rear bed to provide
resistance against destructive forces due to floating objects and score etc.
3. When the foundation is subjected to a large lateral load.
4. When the depth of the water level in the river and sea is high.
5. When there are river forces included in the load compositions.
6. When the load is needed to carry at the end, caissons are preferred.
7. When the present groundwater level is aggressive inflow, caissons are suitable. [3]
Types of Caissons:
The shape and size of a caisson depends upon the nature of structure for which it is to be built
and the depth up to which it is required to be sunk. Caissons can be broadly classified in the
following three different types.
(1) Open caisson
(2) Box caisson
(3) Pneumatic caisson.
