Super Bowl XLV: Fans come from all walks of life
For Ricky Najera, Super
Bowl XLV (45) being
played at Cowboy Stadium
in Arlington, Texas, is no
big deal. Not when the
Cowboys aren’t playing.
Najera, a life-long Cow-
boys fan, said he would
rather any two other teams
would play than the Pitts-
burgh Steelers and the
Green Bay Packers, two
avowed enemies of his fa-
vorite team. “I don’t want
the Steelers, or the Pack-
ers, to win in our stadium,”
Najera said. “I would’ve
liked for our Cowboys to
be there, winning the
Super Bowl on their own
turf.”
Najera, a former
star Quarterback for Ysleta
High School, is, like many
an El Pasoan a Cowboy’s
fan. At the onset of this
year’s NFL season, Cow-
boys owner Jerry Jones
had predicted that the
Cowboys would be the
first team in history to play
a Super Bowl on their
own, brand-new, $1.2 bil-
lion stadium. But, the for-
tunes of war didn’t turn
out as Jones expected, as
the Cowboys struggled to
a 6-10 record.
Super Bowl XLV,
for Steelers fans, will pres-
ent an opportunity to their
team to boost their Super
Bowl victories to seven,
two more than Dallas. For
Green Bay, it will be their
fourth victory, if they
should win. The Steelers,
by their appearance this
year, also tie the Cowboys
in appearances, with eight.
One Green Bay

that his team is, finally, in
the big game, and it is a
big one – with more than
100,000 fans expected at

UTEP Coach Don Haskins: A jewel of a man
UTEP Coach Don Hask-
ins was a regular guy, a
good, all-around buddy to
those in need, and, espe-
cially, to his players. I first
heard about the coach
when I was a junior at Jef-
ferson High School (la
Jeff). In those days, the
Texas Western College
Miners didn’t have a per-
manent home, so his play-
ers did their job at the El
Paso County Coliseum. A
wooden basketball floor
would be laid down on the
cement base, and one
could hear the squeaks,
bumps, and other noises in
the night.
I was on the var-
sity basketball team at la
Jeff, so I was, of course,
very interested in the sport
and grew to love it at any
level. I remember one
night when I walked to the
Coliseum because that
was the only way I could
get there from my home
on Rivera Avenue. As I re-
call, it was snowing like
mad – an unusual El Paso
winter scene. What had
turned out to be gently
falling snowflakes, had
turned into a raging winter
storm by the time I arrived
at the then-Miners’ haven.
I was anxious to
see the new coach and to
see what he brought to El
Paso. Haskins didn’t only
play black players, he also
played Chicanos. Joe Es-
quivel, who had been a
star at La Jeff, along with
my brother, Nasario
Olvera, was on the Min-
ers. Besides him, Haskins
had already started play-
ing black players in Nolan
Richardson, Bad News
Jim Barnes, and other stel-
lar performers. Haskins
was color-blind as far as

alarms, and advance planning

that everyone in your family
is familiar with and has prac-

Smoke alarms save lives. Ac-
cording to the National Fire
Protection Association, al-
most two-thirds of home fire

homes with no smoke alarms
or no working smoke alarms.
When there is a fire, smoke
spreads fast and you need
smoke alarms to give you
time to get out.
Tips
•Test your detector - You
should run a test of every de-
tector in your house anywhere
from once a week to once a
month. All units should have
an easily-accessible test but-
ton.
•Check your batteries! - You
should check your batteries
every six months, and change
them every year. A good rule
of thumb is to check the bat-
teries when you turn your
clocks ahead in the spring,
and then change the batteries
when you turn your clocks
back in the fall. If a battery is
starting to lose its power, the
unit will usually chirp to warn
you.
•Don't ignore false alarms! -
If your unit seems to have
more than its share of un-

it.
•Keep your detectors clean -
At least once a year, vacuum

might accumulate inside the
unit and in the slats on the
outside cover.
•NEVER borrow a battery -

Weatherman's Day?
I
f the groundhog can get its own day, why
can the weather people? Every February 5th is
National Weatherman's Day which honors
weathermen, and woman who work hard to try
and accurately predict the often fickle weather.
Despite major technological advances and super-
computers, forecasting the weather is still a
tricky and ever changing business. Knowing the
weather is important in many ways. It affects
how we dress, where we go, and even if we go.
Space launches are made or delayed depending
upon the weather. And, knowing the weather can
save lives. The most obvious example is know-
ing when and where hurricanes or tornados may hit.

According to the Air Force News, Weatherman's Day "commemorates the

birth of John Jeffries, one of America's first weathermen". Jeffries was born on
Feb 5, 1745. He kept weather records from 1774 to 1816. It’s also documented
that Jeffries flew in a balloon across the English Channel in 1785. Some argue he
was the first American to fly. Since flying and meteorology are intertwined this Weather Trivia:

knows the economy has hit
hard times and, as a result,
more people are working past
the age of retirement. This
means some in the workplace
are beginning to deal with
Alzheimer's and other demen-
tia-related illnesses.
"Anita" is in her
late 60s and we are certain
she is showing symptoms of
dementia. She has worked in
our office about three years,
after working in this field for
more than 30 years else-
where. But if you saw her in
our office today, you would
think it was her first week --
if not her first day.
Anita makes multi-
ple mistakes every day, then
sits at her desk and cries her
eyes out. Our supervisor in-
sists there is nothing he or
HR can do in regards to talk-
ing (gently) to her because
she could sue the company.
I'm sorry Anita is
suffering, but must we let her
deteriorate for three more
years in our office? That's
how long she is planning on
staying, even though she's eli-
gible for retirement. Her fam-
ily lives elsewhere in the state
and may not realize she is ill.
Were she my mother, I would
want someone to do some-
thing. What's the right thing
to do for everyone involved?

putting her granddaughter

a car backing out of a parking
space, careened off that car
and ran over Mara. Mara was
pinned underneath the car
until the fire department ar-
rived and lifted it off her.
Mara's daughter saw it all.
The 3-year-old is still in the
hospital, but will survive.
I realize my friend
died over a parking spot. I
hope people reading this will
see that we all need to slow
down and pay attention. A car
can be as lethal as a gun. I
didn't "get it" before, but now
I do. Because of the reckless
actions of a complete
stranger, you can kiss your
husband goodbye, go shop-
ping and never return! I hope
this nightmare can help oth-

The Savage Truth on Money
Long-Term Care Combined With Life Insurance Solves Problems

I have often written about the
importance of having long-
term care insurance — poli-
cies that pay for home care or
assisted living or nursing
home care — in case you are
unable to independently man-
age the basic activities of
daily living.
That kind of care is expensive
— as much as $8,000 per
month in a private nursing fa-
cility or from home health-
care aides. Without insurance,
you could quickly go through
most of your savings and
wind up dependent on state-
funded care, which is typi-
cally given only in Medicaid
nursing homes. And at the
rate states are running out of
money, their facilities cer-
tainly won't be able to offer
the care you want.
Buying long-term care insur-
ance gives you the choice of
where you will receive care
and how to schedule that care.
It is a concept that makes per-
fect sense — except for two
very reasonable objections:
What if I don't use it?
When asked, I always re-
spond that I hope you never
have to use your LTC insur-
ance, that you live a long and
healthy life, and die in your
sleep at 95.
But what are the odds? Once
you're over 65, the odds are
10 times as great that you'll
need some form of long-term
assistance than that your
home will burn down. But
you still buy homeowners in-
surance. And also you should
have long-term care insur-
ance.
What if my annual premiums
rise and I can't afford my pol-
icy in later years?
That's a reasonable worry.
Many companies that sold
policies a decade or two ago
found that they had under-
priced the premiums. Some
insurers have stopped issuing
LTC insurance policies (al-
though by law they must sup-
port existing policies), or they
have raised premiums for all
existing policyholders.
One way to avoid that prob-
lem is to buy a "10-pay" long-
term care insurance policy. If
you do that in your high-earn-
ing years, you'll be fully paid
up with no chance of rising
premiums. But that involves
paying a lot of money upfront
for a policy you may never
use.
Several large insurers recog-
nized this dilemma — and
have created policies that
combine the benefits of life
in-
surance and long-term care
insurance. Although each pol-
icy has its own features, basi-
cally the idea is that if you
don't use the money in the
policy for long-term care
costs, your heirs will receive a
death benefit so your money
isn't wasted.
These policies are funded by
a large, single-premium de-
posit into a life insurance pol-
icy. Typically the money
comes from savings that you
don't plan to use in your life-
time, but would otherwise
leave to your heirs (unless
you needed to spend it on
long-term care). If some of
the death benefit is used for
care, the balance goes to your
heirs.
Buying one of these combo
policies gives you leverage to
get more long-term care cov-
erage than simply self-insur-
ing by keeping the money in
savings.
Here's what I mean by
leverage:
— A 55-year-old woman, in-
vesting $100,000, could get
$240,000 in death LTC bene-
fits, or $9,600 a month for
long-term care.
— At 65, that $100,000 de-
posit would create $180,000
in death benefits, and a
$7,200 a month LTC benefit.
The withdrawal for care costs
is limited to 4 percent of the
death benefit each month —
with an optional 3 percent or
5 percent inflation increase.
That gives you a lot more
leverage (money available to
pay for care) than you could
have received if you simply
saved the $100,000 in case
you needed care. Some poli-
cies, such as the OneAmerica
Asset-Care plan, offer a life-
time LTC option for an addi-
tional premium.
Remember, any money from
the death benefit that you
don't spend on care goes to
your heirs!
OneAmerica also offers a
combination annuity and LTC
policy, called Annuity Care.
You don't get the life insur-
ance — but you might want to
do an exchange of an existing
annuity (including accumu-
lated gains) into one of these
combo LTC annuity policies.
Then, under recent tax law, if
you need to access the money
for custodial care, it will all
come out tax-free (unlike
most annuity withdrawals).
First of all, you have to have
the assets to reposition into
one of these policies. But
once you make the purchase,
you never have to worry
about rising monthly premi-
ums. You're locked in.
There are costs with every
policy — "mortality costs"
to cover the death benefit
promise and costs to offer
the care.
But you know those costs up-
front, because they are baked
into the promise of the death
benefit and the care benefit,
which won't change except
for the inflation increases on
the benefits.
For sure, you (or your heirs)
get something back from the
policy — either the care bene-
fits or the death benefits — or
whatever is left over after you
used some of the care bene-
fits.
Like traditional life or LTC
insurance policies, there are
underwriting standards you
must meet to purchase these
policies. So the time to con-
sider it is when you're
healthy. Also, the insurance
company has to certify your
need for care before it will re-
lease the benefits for care.
There are so many variables
in these policies that you
should use an expert agent
who can compare them and
help you find the product that
is best for you. The three
major insurers listed below all
offer variations on these com-
bination policies, which are
sold through independent
agents.
— OneAmerica,

ance or through an annuity.
— Lincoln National,

For years now, die-hard
comic fans have had to play
unofficial superhero-based
MMOs where they actually
get in trouble for creating
characters that resemble es-
tablished heroes. Now that
"DC Universe Online" has
been released, players are en-
couraged to make carbon
copies of their favorite he-
roes. Fortunately, there's
much more to this MMO than
meets the eye.
The opening cinematic dic-
tates the mature tone of the
game as Superman, Wonder
Woman and other famous he-
roes battle Lex Luthor and
other bad guys. Luthor de-
feats his enemies, but before
he can bask in the glow of
victory, Brainiac and his alien
henchman swoop in to take
over Earth. Now both heroes
and villains must team up to
defeat their common enemy,
so they can save the planet
and continue their own feud.
Budding superheroes or su-
pervillains begin their career
by creating a foreboding char-
acter. A vast amount of cus-
tomization is available
ranging from the costume to
hairstyle to facial features,
and there are even templates
of famous established charac-
ters like the Joker and Bat-
man. Instead of choosing a
"class," players instead select
their main power, such as
Magic or Fire, and a fighting
style like dual-pistols or
melee combat. With literally
thousands of ability combina-
tions, I'm always running into
other players with different
powers.
Unlike most MMOs, combat
in "DC Universe Online" is
very action-based with con-
trols that are designed for
consoles. Instead of clicking
on abilities with a mouse,
players use an effective con-
trol scheme that combines
melee and ability combat.
This lets them switch moves
very quickly, creating their
own unique combinations of
attacks, crowd control and
heals. As such, anyone play-
ing on a computer should use
a controller instead of a key-
board and mouse.
Completing main quests in-
creases each hero or villains
level, while side quests offer
money and gear as the re-
ward. Thankfully, there is no
"enemy grinding" to level up.
Skill upgrades can be spent
on melee or projectile abili-
ties, while Power points are
spent on Power Trees that
give new main abilities in
fields like Ice and Summon-
ing. There are so many cool
moves to obtain that it's a
pleasure just to level up and
gain new powers!
This wouldn't be an MMO
without other participants,
and "DC Universe Online" al-
lows players to team up for
questing, instances (dun-
geons), raids and PVP (Player
vs. Player). Instead of Guilds,
players create and/or join
Leagues so they can help each

other out and group together
quickly. Anyone who is "lost"
while playing should join a
League, and there will be
plenty of people to help them
out.
With such a large number of
character ability combina-
tions, playing against other
players in "battleground-
style" arenas is very hectic.
It's possible to play special
matches with famous charac-
ters and their own abilities or
regular matches with the char-
acters you created. Regardless
of which matches you enter,
there will be magic, projec-
tiles and brawler moves
spammed everywhere you
look. This seems to be the
part of the game that needs
the most work.
"DC Universe Online" is cer-
tainly one of
the most vi-
sually ap-
pealing
MMOs to be
released,
and it looks
far better
than any
other con-
sole MMO.
Characters
and their
moves are
highly de-
tailed and
fluidly animated. I also love
the ability to use the original
visuals for each new piece of
armor, or I can change the
look to any other piece I've
found. This means I won't ig-
nore that awesome new chest
armor with great stats just be-
cause it looks like a frilly pi-
rate outfit.
With choppy animations, oc-
casional disconnects and the
fact that typing messages with
the PS3 controller is not easy,
all is not perfect in the world
of "DC Universe Online."
Still, it's one of the more pol-
ished MMOs at launch and
will surely satisfy this genera-
tion of action fans.

Westminster winners are tops in dog-show game

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has
long served as an unofficial national champi-
onship for the nation’s dog-show competitors.
The two-day show is always held in New York’s
Madison Square Garden, kicking off this year
on Monday, Feb. 14.
Westminster is a special show where
only champions can compete. At all other dog
shows, most competitors are trying to earn their
dogs’ championships. And that’s when follow-
ing the action can get confusing.
Dog shows are supposed to be about
evaluating breeding stock, with the goal of pre-
serving and improving the dog breeds involved.
But over the years, the sport has become a high-
stakes and high-cost endeavor that’s perhaps the
most difficult of all canine competitions for be-
ginners to break into successfully.
Even if you have a “show quality”
dog with no disqualifying or major problems in
appearance, winning is tough. Getting a dog to
look his best in the ring is a subtle art that’s dif-
ficult to master. In many breeds, the work of
getting a dog groomed for the show ring takes
years to learn.
A dog must match up favorably to the
ideal of his breed, called “the standard.” Judges
mentally compare each dog to the standard,
choosing the one who most closely conforms to
their vision of a “perfect” dog. Even with a
near-perfect physical appearance, a dog needs a
skilled handler. Winning isn’t easy in a sport
where amateurs must compete against expert
professional handlers.

female dog will end up with “points” toward
their championship in each breed, with the

number of points determined by the popularity
of each breed in a given region. A dog must get
two “major” wins of three points or more and
15 total points to become a champion — a
process that can often span months or even
years.
Showing dogs isn’t cheap, by the way,
and thousands of dollars can be spent trying to
earn a dog’s championship. The dogs who make
the cut to compete for Best in Show at West-
minster often represent a small fortune invested,
with little payoff for the owners except to their
pride.
All of which goes a long way to ex-
plain why most dog owners will watch West-
minster from their couches, with their own
family champions by their sides.

at all. And if swallowed, you may have al-
ready missed the head’s re-emergence, be-
cause, well, how many people want to
examine a dog’s feces all that closely in a
search for missing objects? So be alert for
symptoms, but your dog doesn’t need to
see the veterinarian unless you notice
problems.
Labradors are well-known in
veterinary offices for their eagerness to
consume just about anything that’s not
nailed down — and even some things that
are. Socks, underwear, rocks, keys, toys,
cell phones — if it can fit in the mouth,
there’s a Labrador who will swallow it.
The best cure for this is preventive, espe-
cially with young dogs. Keep anything that
can be swallowed picked up and put out of
reach of your dog. (Labradors are also
well-known for their appetites, which earn
them the veterinary nickname of
“Flabradors.”)
While many swallowed objects
will pass through without causing prob-
lems, others can be deadly. If a pet vomits,
loses interest in eating or drinking, or oth-
erwise seems “off” after ingesting a for-
eign body, you’ll need your veterinarian’s

A perpetual provocateur, Smashing Pumpkins leader

Billy Corgan is one of alternative-rock's most out-
spoken musicians. But after nearly 20 years creating
near-constant controversy with his opinions, he no
longer feels duty-bound to speak out.

"Not anymore, because you become (like) the lone

Japanese soldier still fighting World War II, 10 years
after the fact," said Corgan, 43, who is busy making
music with the latest edition of Smashing Pumpkins

However, before he could even think about assuming

a Zen-like sense of calm during a recent phone inter-
view from Los Angeles, Corgan was off and running
like a Japanese soldier in take-no-prisoners mode.

"I haven't seen my generation — when you talk

about another generation, you sound like an old, bit-
ter guy — (but) I mean, what the (expletive) is my
generation doing now?" Corgan demanded.

"The U.S. is in two wars and tinkering with another

possible one in North Korea. You have invasive gov-
ernment things, (like) spying on citizens and the TSA
nonsense. Where's the response from my generation,
a supposedly disenfranchised generation? There's a
silence."

Without pausing, Corgan then ripped into the pio-

neering alt-rock band Pavement, whose recent re-
union after a 10-year hiatus prompted him to make
withering comments on his Twitter page.

"Pavement is out there playing their old hits. What

do they think?" Corgan asked. "Not everyone does a
cash-grab (and reunites). They're an easy target, be-
cause I have issues with them. But the response of
my generation (to current events) is pitiful and over-
whelming, so why the (expletive) do I want to run
out there with a flag? To get criticized for giving a
(expletive)? I don't want to be a dead hero. I do what
I can, here and there."

So, is he done dissing Pavement or Pavement's fans

who lashed out at him for speaking ill of the band?
Not quite.

"It's with great irony I look at people who criticized

me in the '90s, and see they are playing their old al-
bums on tour, (while) I'm trying to make new
music," Corgan said.

snarks to rip them apart is for
the snarks to reveal them-
selves as the poseurs they are.
... So, here I am, getting my
ass kicked for being an honest
guy and being imperfect.
Well, that's who I am."
Corgan spoke for nearly an
hour about his frustrations,
his band and his latest songs.
He also discussed the ambi-
tious book he has written
about spirituality, which he
hopes to publish next year
and mark the start of the sec-
ond phase of his life. Here are
selected excerpts from the in-
terview:
Q: Both my parents were
born and raised in Hungary,
and there's an old Hungarian
saying that goes: "Tell people
the truth and they kick your
head in."
A: (Laugh uproariously)."
That has been my experience
in life, absolutely! I'm a
Pisces and we look at things
from two perspectives. I get
that people want rock 'n' roll
to be a fantasy camp; by the
same token, there's plenty of
room for a divergent set of
opinions. Like, Lou Reed bal-
ances David Bowie, balances
Neil Young, balances (Bob)
Dylan. But not everybody
needs to come from the same
fantasy land perspective ...
"There's an unspoken code in
rock (that goes): 'Hey, I won't
reveal your b.s. if you don't
reveal mine.' I'm sure you've
encountered people who have
a very public image, but
they're really actors, very so-
phisticated actors, because
people project on them that
they are 'the working man.'
It's a self-perpetuating myth
the media perpetrates. So,
here I am, getting my ass
kicked for being an honest
guy and being imperfect. You
definitely pay a price for
telling the truth."
Q: But isn't rock, ideally, sup-
posed to be a forum for
telling the truth?
A: "It's part of the fantasy. I
talk to fans all the time, and
I'll say: 'What do you think of
this artist?' And they say:
'He's a good guy.' So, what
they mean is: 'I'm willing to
listen to his b.s., because he's
a good guy.'"
Q: Does it matter? Pablo Pi-
casso was, by all accounts, a
total jerk who treated most
people like dirt. Does that
make his art less great or no-
table? Should we separate the
art from the person who made
it?
A: "I think the art is the only
thing that matters. I'm not
saying the life of the artist
shouldn't be examined. But to
put the life of the artist as the
equal of the art is coming
from the audience or the 'per-
ceiver,' not from people who
really understand art.
"Let's say you and I are tak-
ing a hike and I've just fin-
ished telling you what a
horrible person I am. But at
the end, I tell you a parable
that is the greatest parable
you've ever heard. Does it di-
minish the parable because
I'm a piece of (crap)? No. It
might have more value be-
cause I'm a piece of (crap).
The modern world is very fo-
cused on negative aspects of
the artist, because it's part of
some marketing campaign.

Bad shot
Within a couple of thruway stops from my house, a
man was shot to death during a robbery while he was
playing golf. As he stood on the 17th tee of the Deerfield
Country Club in Deerfield Beach, Fla., Lataurus
Randall was shot in the back by two masked robbers,
who then fled into the surrounding housing complex
and disappeared.
This murder points up the vulnerability of golf
courses, once considered the safest of venues, when
it comes to security such as guards and cameras.
Basically, golfers are sitting ducks when it comes to
crime.

addictive, ranging from the fact that it’s the best
game this side of poker to gamble on, to the inter-
nal challenge golf poses, i.e., it’s you against your
toughest opponent — you.
But here is another reason: If you love golf, you
can’t think about anything else — at least while
you’re playing. And according to Harvard re-
searchers Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel
Gilbert, the more you do things that focus your
mind, the happier you’ll be.
I have been told by many of my students that they
play golf because it demands so much mental focus
that they don’t think about business, social frictions
or any of the depressing thoughts the average mind
entertains when it’s allowed to wander. Often during

mind him that he hasn’t thought about busi-
ness once in 45 minutes and what a blessing
that is, especially in this stress-filled economy.
How did the researchers come to their con-
clusions about focus and daydreaming? Using
a “track your happiness” iPhone app they de-
veloped, they phoned people around the world
to ask how they were feeling, what they were
doing and what they were thinking. There
were several interesting findings, but the bot-
tom line was those whose minds wandered
were more unhappy than those whose minds
stayed focused on what they were doing. In a

Ball’s flight path diagnoses swing
This is the first article in a series
on how to troubleshoot your golf
swing based on the flight of the ball.
This way the ball becomes your
teacher, first on the practice tee, and
then on the golf course, where you
can fix your swing
while you’re playing.
Note that to troubleshoot effec-
tively, you must first make sure your
aim and alignment are correct. In ad-
dition, what follows assumes that
contact is made in the middle of the
clubface.
It has been said that the ball “only
knows impact,” meaning
that its flight characteristics are pro-
duced by five physical parameters of
your golf shot: the path of the club-
head; the angle of approach the club-
head takes to the ball; the velocity of
the clubhead; where on the clubface
the collision takes place; and where
your clubface is looking at impact.
Straight push
The first shot I’ll describe is
the straight push, the shot that
goes to the right (left for left-han-
ders). When the ball is pushed off
line with no curve to the flight, the
implication is that the path of your
club is moving in-to-out in relation
to the target line, and the clubface is
square to the path. There are several
reasons a ball is pushed, but I will
deal with one of the
most common to demonstrate
how to troubleshoot the problem.
When your hips rotate too early
during the downswing, your right
elbow doesn’t have time to get in
front of your right hip, and therefore
your club is prevented from getting
into the correct downswing slot.
You’ve got a path problem that
pushes the ball off line because your
hips turn early, making
your hands and the clubface
late for impact.
The adjustment is to turn your
hips later, which will delay impact,
giving your clubhead the time it
needs to get out from behind you
and onto the target line. The best
way to do this is to make a setup
change by increasing the flare in
both feet. The more flare, the more
hip turn, and more hip turn effective-
ly slows your hips because they have
to travel farther.

In a high-stakes game where we call penalties on ourselves,
there aren’t a lot of incidents like the case of Scottish golfer
Elliot Saltman, who has been banned for three months by the
European Tour for marking his ball incorrectly during an event
last year. A statement released by the tour said Saltman “commit-
ted a serious breach” of regulations and was suspended from all
European Tour and Challenge Tour-sanctioned tournaments with
immediate effect.
The incident happened during the first round of the Russian
Challenge Cup last Sept. 16. The 28-year-old Saltman was
disqualified and attended a disciplinary hearing in Abu Dhabi on
Tuesday.
Sweden’s Johan Tumba was the last professional to be
expelled from the tour. He was banned for 10 years in 1992 for
altering his scorecard.
Perhaps the most infamous incident involved Vijay Singh,
who was suspended from the Asian tour in 1985 over allegations
he doctored his scorecard by turning in a score that was a stroke
lower than he actually shot — just enough to make the cut.

when we were fighting through
some of our engineering prob-
lems we had, and simulation
models weren’t working out ex-
actly.”
He explained that he’d have a
direction he’d like to try on his
chassis setups, but the com-
puter models suggested some-
thing totally opposite. Then he’d
get in the car and be even more
confounded.
“You felt like you’d never
done this before,” he said. “At
Richmond, my favorite track on
the schedule and a track we’ve

go there and run 25th. I felt
like: ‘I don’t know what I’m
doing. Something’s not right.’”

NASCAR chairman announces new rules for 2011

NASCAR chairman
Brian France made the
sanctioning body’s new
rules official last week,
announcing the details of
the widely expected
changes during a press
conference that was part
of the sport’s annual pre-
season media tour in
Charlotte, N.C.
France confirmed that
the points system will
now be based on a one-
point-per-position for-
mula. The race winner
gets 43 points. Second
place gets 42 on down to
the last-place driver, who
gets one. There still will
be bonus points – three
for a race win, one for
leading a lap and one
more for leading the most
laps.
The Chase lineup was
tweaked a bit. The top 10
in points after the first 26
races are in the 10-race
championship hunt, plus
two “wild card” drivers
who won races during the
regular season but didn’t
accumulate enough points
to make the Chase. That
eliminates a scenario like
last year when Jamie Mc-
Murray won three races,
including the two biggest
ones – the Daytona 500
and the Brickyard 400 –
but missed the Chase.
There also were
changes to the qualifying
procedure. Instead of the
qualifying order set by a
random draw, drivers will
go onto the track with the
order based upon slowest
to fastest practice speeds.
If qualifying is rained
out, the starting lineup
will be set by practice
speeds, which eliminates
a situation like several
years ago at Daytona
when Boris Said topped
the charts in practice and
early qualifying,but went
home when the session
was rained out. If
weather cancels practice
sessions, then the start-
ing lineup will be set by
points.
Teams will be limited to
five sets of tires in prac-
tice, down from six in pre-
vious seasons. Allotments
for each race will vary de-
pending on expected tire
wear at the track. And a
closed fueling system will
be mandated. It elimi-
nates the need for a
catch-can man, and there-
fore the over-the-wall pit
crew will drop from seven

Most drivers and others

changes, although there
was some grumbling that
the new points system re-
wards consistency – in-
stead of winning – even
more than the old
points formula.
Their arguments ap-
pear to have merit, as
the new formula does
seem to penalize poor
performances more
than the old.
In the past, the last-
place driver got 34 points,
compared to 195 for the
winner, so the first driver
out of the race got
roughly 17 percent of the
winner’s points. Now he’ll
get one point, or 2 percent
of the winner’s 47 (43 for
winning, one for leading a
lap and three bonus
points for winning).
The percentages get
better on up the finishing
order and become almost
identical to the old sys-
tem for the top-10 finish-
ers.
But fans will have to
get used to the idea that
it’s just as hard to make
up 14 points now as it
was 61 before. (Greg Bif-
fle finished 10th at Home-
stead last fall and got 134
points to race winner Carl
Edwards’ 195.)
Historically, NASCAR
has chosen to reward con-
sistency in its points sys-
tems. Since the sport’s
Modern Era started in
1972, there have only
been 11 seasons in which
the winner of the most
races also won the cham-
pionship.
A situation in 2003 led
to the creation of the
Chase format. Ryan New-
man won eight races but
lost the championship to
Matt Kenseth, who had
just one win.

In the automotive
world, the Mitsubishi Lancer
is one of those cars that have
a split personality. To some,
the Lancer is an inexpensive
family sedan with prices start-

others look at the Lancer –
when fitted in Evolution trim
– as a serious, expensive,

Woods Bros. to honor Pear-
son
The Wood Brothers racing team strayed from their
norm when they hired rookie Trevor Bayne to drive
their No. 21 Ford this year. In the past they’ve hired
mostly veterans.
But their 2011 season will have a familiar feel, as
the Woods are dedicating their season to their most fa-
mous former driver – David Pearson.
Pearson drove for the Wood Brothers from 1972 to
1979 and won 43 races and
51 poles.
