Socialization Writing

Socialization is the action of an individual’s identity through experiences they have

throughout their life. There are two different perspective in our behaviors, which are known as

nature and nurture. Nature applies when our behaviors are from our genetics; unlike nurture,

which happens from our surroundings and where we are grow up in. Culture is one of the

important behaviors to people, because it oversees their abilities to have a change in the

environment. Sociologists state that some people age with respectful behaviors, while some may

be brought up with no respect to society. This can be the cause of either genetics, or from

childhood. Some people may be wrongly informed of their mistakes and rights, which affects

their lives.

Charles Horton Cooley said people’s self-meaning is identified by their recognition of

how others view them. He also said that our idea of self is not by individuality, instead it is how

we imagine each other and how we come to a judgment based on their expressions, and we use

that to create the personal idea of self. We use people’s expressions as a mirror to justify who we

are. According to Charles Horton Cooley, the “looking glass self,” is a three-step process; the

first step is our mind makes an appearance of ourselves. Second step is the interaction we have

which shows a perspective of ourselves. The final step is we use these points of views to create

an illusion on how others see us. George Herbert Mead said one of the components of our self is

the measurement for self-reflection. We are seen through our everyday encounters instead of

who we think we are. He also has a three-stage process; these stages are preparatory stage, play

stage, and a game stage. He states the first stage is when we are young, and do not have the

capability of imitating, so we do not have the ability to know how others view things. They use

this instead to copy their parents whom they routinely interact with. The play stage is when

children start taking adult behavior, for example acting like their parents, which is defined as a

role play. The game stage is when children began to understand the meaning of interaction with

different people in different occasions. They start to set rules and expectations. Generalized

others is where our expectations and norms are justified by the term. Significant others who have

been more experienced are related to self since they help you make choices.

Self-development in society is brought up by people who interact, which is known as the

agent of socialization. Gender role socialization in schools is based on a student behaviors and

personality due to their gender. For example, having a gym teacher tell the boys to lift heavier

meaning being more athletic, while the girls to reach maturity, by emotion. Technology has

influenced people who are afraid of public speaking, or those who are as open; technology has

given those more options. For example, more opinions and ideas have been set across the world

than before.

Anticipatory socialization is to accept the norm that they were valued in and use it in the

future. For example, a middle age person getting ready for retirements, which will happen few

years in the future. Resocialization is where a person must get used to the new experiences. For

example, a person going to prison. They must adapt to their new life and choices. Degradation

ceremony is to remove an individual from a group. An example would be committing a felony,

the individual loses their freedom but instead picks up another identity by being recognized as a

criminal.
