IMPORTANT! SAFETY INFORMATION
PROTECT AGAINST FLYING DEBRIS
Always wear proper safety glasses, goggles, or a face shield when driving
pins in or out or when any operation causes dust, flying debris, or any other
hazardous material.

LOWER OR SUPPORT RAISED EQUIPMENT

Do not work under raised 3 point lift arms without supporting them. Do not
use support material made of concrete blocks, logs, buckets, barrels, or any
other material that could suddenly collapse or shift positions. Make sure
support material is solid, not decayed, warped, twisted or tapered. Lower
lift arms to ground level or onto blocks. Lower lift arms and attachments to
the ground before leaving the cab or operator’s station.

USE CARE WITH HYDRAULIC FLUID PRESSURE

Hydraulic fluid pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injury or
death. Hydraulic leaks under pressure may not be visible. Before connect-
ing or disconnecting hydraulic hoses, read your prime mover operator’s
manual for detailed instructions on connecting and disconnecting hydraulic
hoses or fittings.
● Keep unprotected body parts, such as face, eyes and arms as far
away as possible from a suspected leak. Flesh injected with hydraulic fluid
may develop gangrene or other permanent disabilities.
● If injured by injected fluid, see a doctor at once. If your doctor is not
familiar with this type of injury, ask him to research immediately to deter-
mine proper treatment.
● Wear safety glasses, protective clothing, and use a sound piece of
cardboard or wood when searching for hydraulic leaks. DO NOT USE
YOUR HANDS! SEE ILLUSTRATION BELOW.

EQUIPMENT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Safety is a primary concern in the design and manufacture of our products. Unfor-
tunately, our efforts to provide safe equipment can be wiped out by a single careless
act of an operator. In addition to the design and configuration of the equipment,
hazard control and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern,
prudence, and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport,
maintenance and storage of equipment. The designed and tested safety of this
equipment depends on it being operated within the limitations explained in this
manual.

INITIAL SETUP AND SYSTEMS CHECK

● Always check with your prime mover manual or dealer to counter weight ballast
that may be required for machine stability.
● Air in hydraulic systems can cause erratic operation and allows loads or equip-
ment components to drop unexpectedly. Before operating equipment be sure to
purge any air in the system by engaging all hydraulic functions.

(44ABB141) 9
IMPORTANT! SAFETY INFORMATION
● Check that all control lever positions function as instructed in the Operator’s
Manual. Do not operate until control lever and equipment movements are correct.
● Make sure all hydraulic hoses, fittings, and valves are in good condition and not
leaking before starting the power unit. Check and route hoses carefully to prevent
damage.
● Hoses must not be twisted, bent sharply, kinked, frayed, pinched, or come into
contact with any moving parts.
● Operate moveable components through full operational range to check clear-
ances. Replace damaged hoses immediately.
● Ensure implement is properly attached, adjusted and in good condition.
● Tractor must be equipped with ROPS and seat belt/operator restraint.
● Keep seat belt/operator restraint securely fastened/engaged. Falling off prime
mover can result in death from being run over or crushed. Keep ROPS systems in
place at all times.

SAFELY OPERATE EQUIPMENT

Improper operation can cause the machine to tip or roll over and cause injury or
death.
● Keep prime mover lift arms and attachment as low as possible.
● Turn on level ground.
● Go up and down slopes, not across them.
● Keep the heavy end of the machine uphill.
● Only engage power when the equipment is at ground level. Always disengage
power when equipment is raised off the ground.
● Do not disconnect hydraulic lines until all system pressure is relieved.
● Never go underneath equipment lowered to the ground or raised. Hydraulic
system leak down, hydraulic system failures, mechanical failures or movement of
control levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly and cause severe
injury or death.
● Never direct discharge toward people, animals or property.
● Do not operate equipment while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
● Operate only in the daylight or good artificial lighting.
● Always comply with all state and local lighting and marking requirements.
● Ensure equipment is properly attached, adjusted and in good operating condi-
tion.
● A minimum 20% of prime mover and equipment weight must be on prime mover
front wheels with attachments in “transport” position. Without this weight, prime
mover could tip over causing personal injury or death. The weight may be attained
with a loader, front wheel weights, ballast in tires, or front prime mover weights.
When attaching weights, you must not exceed the Roll Over Protection Structure
(ROPS) weight certification. Weigh the prime mover and equipment. Do not esti-
mate.
● Ensure shields and guards are properly installed and in good condition. Replace
if damaged.

10 (44ABB141)

OPERATION

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Read and understand the screener and tractor Operator’s Manuals before operating the screener. Failure to do so
may result in death, serious personal injury, or property damage.
Never raise the screener more than a few inches off the ground when traveling from job site to job site.
Shut off the engine, set brake, remove key, remove seat belt before dismounting the tractor.

Look down and to the rear and make sure area is clear before
operating in reverse. Only engage power when equipment is at
ground operating level.

SCREENER-BEACHCLEANER FUNCTION
The tractor auxiliary hydraulics or PTO pump drives a flighted conveyor chain system which pulls sand, soil,
stones, and debris up an inclined oscillating screen bed, allowing the sand and finer particles to pass through the
screen and fall to the ground, while the debris and stone are carried up and delivered into the hopper.

OPERATION

Review Safety Information on pages 7-11 carefully prior to operating your machine.

OPERATING DEPTH/SCREEN SELECTION

The Model 440 is supplied with two screen sizes -
12mm (1/2”), 19mm (3/4”), and an optional 9mm (3/8”) is available - for various screening applications. Operating
depth, soil or sand moisture, ground speed and screen size need to be considered to do an efficient job of screening.

START-UP SEQUENCE
· Start tractor engine.
· Engage tractor auxiliary hydraulics or engage PTO pump. Increase tractor RPM to obtain desired flight speed.
· Lower digger point to ground.
· Proceed with cleaning at desired speed. Adjust speed to conditions to avoid carrying sand or dirt into hopper.

TURNING
Reduce forward speed, raise digger point out of ground, once turned lower digger point and proceed.
NOTE(440HA, 440HXLA): Depending on your tractor hydraulics, it may be necessary to disengage your auxiliary
hydraulic lever to activate the 3-point lift.

STOPPING
Position conveyor switch in off position (this will also raise the groomer). Move hydraulic control lever to neutral.
Raise digger point with the 3 point hitch.

EMPTYING HOPPER (440A, 440HA, 440RA)

With screener positioned in area to dump hopper contents, activate the switch to open the hopper. Pull ahead of the
pile before reclosing.

EMPTYING HOPPER (440HXLA, 440XLA)

The hopper on the “XL” models can be emptied from ground level to max lift.
-Activate lift switch to lift hopper.
-Back into position and activate switch to open hopper.
-Close hopper before pulling away from dumpster or pile.
-Lower hopper to normal position.
-Do not pull screener around job site with hopper in raised position.
-Do not overfill the hopper. Excess material may be pulled over top of conveyor which could result in damage to
components.
-Over filling with heavier material such as rock or gravel may exceed the lift capacity of the high lift system. In this
case the load must be dumped at its lift limit.

(44ABB141) 17
OPERATION
OPERATING TIPS

· It is best to use the Model 440 when the sand or soil is dry.
· If the ground is wet it will probably be necessary to use the coarse screen exclusively, especially if it is muddy or
silty! It will dry faster if the hopper is left open and the sand or soil is worked or loosened and all the material is
dropped back on the ground.
· Coarse screen the area prior to fine screening.
· Dig shallow the first time over, work deeper on consecutive passes.
· The ability to separate the sand through the screen is directly related to the forward speed of the tow unit
and the speed of the oscillation. If there is sand in the hopper, adjust tow speed and check speed control setting
on the machine. Begin operation at the number 2 setting and adjust higher if needed for more aggresive screening
in wet conditions. Correct speed can be obtained by regulating the forward speed of the tow unit.
· Differing conditions call for different conveyor speeds, which are controlled by varying the tractor engine RPM.
Operator must determine which conveyor speed is best for the existing conditions (EXPERIMENT).
· If the Model 440 is getting sand in the hopper, one or more of the following has caused it:
1. The forward speed is too fast . . . slow down.
2. The screen is too fine . . . change to a coarser screen.
3. Digging too deep . . . raise digger point.
4. Incorrect conveyor speed . . . experiment.
5. Oscillation speed too slow... adjust valve.
6. Too wet . . . wait or work it until it dries.

SHUTTING DOWN

· Disengage the auxiliary hydraulics or PTO pump.

· Stop equipment and lower lift arms.
· Relieve any pressure in the hydraulic system. Hydraulic system leak-down, hydraulic system failure, me-
chanical failures, or movement of levers can cause equipment to drop or rotate unexpectedly.

Do not disconnect hydraulic lines until

all system pressure is relieved.

MAINTENANCE

Review Safety Information on pages 7-11 carefully prior to operating your machine.

The information in this section is written for operators who possess basic mechanical skills. Should you need help,
your dealer has trained service technicians available. For your protection, read and follow all safety information
in this manual.
Regular preventive maintenance and immediate repair of broken or worn parts will ensure maximum efficiency
and long life.
Because of the nature of the jobs the screener does, such as beach cleaning and stone picking, the screener is
constantly vibrating and shaking. Parts may loosen up as it is used. One of the most important functions an
operator can perform is observing and inspecting the equipment for loose or worn parts to prevent further damage
or excessive downtime.

Screen Change Procedure
Tools needed: 1 set of SAE combination wrenches, wooden blocks and tire chocks.

x Do not work under or attempt to remove parts of the machine without having the proper blocking
in place.
x When working on this or any machine, the wheels must be chocked and the machine must be
supported by jack stands or wooden blocks that are in good working order.

Raise front of the machine, securely block the tires and set the
machine on jack stands that can support 1,800 kg (4000 lbs.)
or good wooden blocks. The best place will be under the frame
of the machine adjacent to the wheels.

1. Remove the three (3) 3/8” SAE bolts from the front tension
bar. These will be located just behind the cutting edge.

2. Rotate the tension bar out of the screen hooks and lay across
the frame.

3
3. Loosen guide bars on both sides of the machine by loosening
seven (7) 3/8” SAE nuts that run from front to back. Move the
guide bar up and then retighten several nuts to keep the bar
from sliding back down on the screen.

4. Remove Access Panels

a. (High lift models) Remove bolt from rear panel 1 3 2
strap and move the panel down. (ref. pictures 1 &

MAINTENANCE

Review Safety Information on pages 7-11 carefully prior to operating your machine.

The information in this section is written for dealer service personnel. The repair described herein requires special
skills and tools. If your shop is not properly equipped or your mechanics are not properly trained in this type of
repair, you may be time and money ahead to replace complete assemblies.

CONVEYOR CHAIN
When the rear access door is opened for service, the tractor engine must be turned off.
Adjustment: Loosen jam nuts on each adjustment bolt and turn bolt to expand conveyor frame. Adjust evenly to
keep conveyor centered in frame.
If all adjustment has been used up, it will be necessary to remove one link from each chain and then re-adjust.
Replacement: Turn adjustment bolt counterclockwise to loosen chain. Remove flighting from chain. Find connector
link and disconnect. Always replace in pairs to match wear. Install new chains with flight mount clips parellel to
each other.
FLIGHTING
When the rear access door is opened for service, the tractor engine must be turned off.
Flighting can be replaced with conveyor in the machine. Manually rotate the drive sprocket to present each flight
in position for changing.

CONVEYOR BEARING REPLACEMENT

When the rear access door is opened for service, the tractor engine must be turned off.
Lower Conveyor Shaft Bearing: Loosen chain adjuster and relieve tension. Loosen set screw in bearing collar and
rotate collar with punch to loosen. Remove bolts and bearing. Reverse procedure to install new bearing.
Upper Conveyor Shaft Bearing: Loosen chain adjuster and relieve tension.
Motor Side: Remove drive motor and coupler. Loosen set screw in bearing collar and rotate with punch to loosen,
remove bolts, and slide bearing off end of shaft.
Idler Side: Remove bolt from end of shaft. Unbolt bearing from frame and slide off shaft. If right shaft bearing is
being replaced the entire shaft assembly must be removed from the machine.
