Video Compression

Video Compression Tests
The edited video was exported using three different settings. The results
are reported in the table on the next slide.
Specifications of the computer used for testing video compression:
• Video editor: Wondershare Filmora 9
• Video player: Windows Media Player
• Operating System: Windows 10

Rate Size
1 1280*720 25 fps H.264 (HD MP4 44100 Hz 98 MB The quality of the video is good
Optimized) considering the codec supports HD. The
file size is large.

2 1280*720 25 fps VC-1 WMV 44100 Hz 94.1 MB The quality of the video is relatively good
but not as good as the MP4 file. The file
size is slightly smaller.

3 1280*720 30 fps VP8 WEBM 44100 Hz 98 MB The quality of the video is good but there
was no sound during playback. The file
size is the same as the MP4 file.

4 1280*720 25 fps H.264 HTML5 44100 Hz 78.9MB The quality of the video is lightly lower
than the other formats tested. This is
probably due to its smaller file size.
Video File Format Selection
Based on the results of this test, I chose to distribute my movie using the MP4
file format as it is supported by most browsers (Maayan, 2020). Also, the
production needed to be exported using a format that provided the best
quality available since the original footage falls below the expected quality.
Although WMV is popular for online streaming, it is not compatible with Apple
devices (Maayan, 2020). WEBM is a browser compatible format (Maayan,
2020), but if the sound is not supported by the video player on my local
computer, it makes it difficult for testing before distributing. I would not use
HTML5 in this particular case because I am not willing to sacrifice quality for
speed of loading time (Arsenault, 2018).
