Walk around outside late at night (early in morning?) and you can really notice the discarded
masks lying on the grass in ditches or at the side of the road or anywhere outside. It’s become a far too
common sight—not like the world’s littered with them like cigarette butts, but you do see the masks here
and there. You notice them and think about how a year before you wouldn’t have seen these shitty
disposable fabric masks laying around everywhere. You think about it and wonder if it’s even worth
thinking about or even worth noticing, but you can’t help but notice them, so there’s that.
You think writing in second-person helps distance yourself from yourself and allows you to look
at yourself from a more objective POV, but you know deep down it’s all bullshit posturing. Just like your
late-night (early-morning?) walks in the dark, you like to pretend you’re deep and moody and cynical but
you know you’re just a hollow shell, an NPC (Non Player Character) in a world of NPC’s that don’t think
they’re NPC’s. You write sentences like If we don't kill each other, we'll kill ourselves to finish the job and
think you’re being edgy but you’re just a vacuous piece of shit walking in the dark in the autumn of this

She eats a stale vegan flatwrap for lunch while sitting at one of the dozen or so tables inside the
break room of the post office data encoding center. She notices how no one makes idle conversation
about being one of the privileged “essential workers” anymore. The two work friends she sits with don’t
say as much, and really don’t say much of anything, just sit there chewing their cuds and staring down at
their phones. What are their names? Did she forget? She thinks she forgot. Could they go another god
knows how many years sitting here eating their meals together without her ever knowing (or needing to
know) their names? She thinks she could. Work relationships are special like that.
One thing she never figured out in her many many years being employed here was who had the
remote for the break room TV. Maybe there was no remote, which was why it had remained on channel
two since, well, forever. Local news on channel two, all day, every day (except during football season).
The volume was always turned all the way down but she couldn’t help but glance at it sometimes and
read the little headlines and tidbits scrolling on the bottom of the screen, as well as the ones
bombastically displayed center screen (usually with a sensationalist image to go along with it).
The world was ending today. The president has a secret Russian bank account. A tanker truck
exploded in Haiti and killed 13 people. A new study found that artificial preservatives and ultra-
processed food are linked to health problems later in life, such as colon cancer and myopia. The
economic recession might soon turn into a depression if the lockdown continues. People are getting sick
and convulsing on the streets, bleeding from their mouth and nose and puking and shitting their pants
and going into shock. Missiles are pointed at every major American city (and even some of the minor

drain, lost in the proverbial space inside the memory banks that comprised the body of nonlocality.
It didn’t quite feel like when Ray Bradbury burned the first million words he ever wrote in a huge
bonfire, but it would do, at least for now. The stories were shit, his style was shit, no one ever read his
shit because it was shit, and his Gutterman stories were the shittiest of all the shits that had ever been
shat. Turns out watching a little Lynch and reading a little Burroughs doesn’t equal the kind of abstract
shit that grabs people’s attention and tickles that intuitive sense that connects dream reality to waking
reality. Oh well.
The worst part was all those wasted hours, he realized. If he was going to give up for good, how
many hundreds and thousands of hours would just go down the drain, time wasted that came of nothing
except a failed dream that he could laugh about when he was getting drunk? But even if it did come to
something and he published his work and people read it and knew who he was, wouldn’t it all amount to
the same thing, anyway, when the world moves on and every manmade creation has turned into vapor
and dust? Nothing truly lasts, or if it does it gets reshaped beyond cohesion until not even the cosmic
memory can recall what it originally was.
He wishes he didn’t feel so damn alone, but that was the curse of existentialism, wasn’t it? Or
something, he doesn’t know anymore, he’s so damn pathetic that he lacks the drive to end it all. He
wonders if he could waste away in the mud until his body lost all shape and became a gelatinous puddle,
and how long it would take for his consciousness to go with it. Would it go the same place as his
Gutterman stories? Maybe, maybe.
