ARTICLE REVIEW

Embracing the new normal means accepting the challenges on the new learning
modalities for the delivery of instruction. Covid-19 pandemic has paved the way of transforming
face-to-face learning into online classes through various digital platforms. Public and private
schools are implementing flexible learning as an alternative to the traditional classroom learning.
This means that the lessons are being delivered through online educational platforms like
televisions, radio, cell phones, and computers depending on its availability on the learner’s area.
This new teaching-learning modes does not only affect the learners and the teachers but also the
parents. They play an essential role in the education of their children at home. They are the one
who is responsible to scaffold the learning of their children.

As I read the article of Mong Palatino entitled “Pedagogy of digitally oppressed, I can
therefore say that we share the same thoughts about how the present situation affects the people
and the educational system. It has been discussed in the article that the starting point in building
a progressive education is the recognition of the learner's cultural capital. This cultural capital
refers to learner's knowledge, behaviors, and skills that a person can tap into to demonstrate one's
cultural competence and social status (Cole, 2019). This means that there is really a need to
recognize the learner’s cultural capital in order to reinforce class differences. Online education is
one of the most difficult challenges that this pandemic brought since student should be capable
of coding, uploading, and streaming his worldview. This can be advantageous to those privileged
students who already have android phones and personal computers but how about those who
cannot afford to have those gadgets and whose areas have limited access on the internet? This
will affect the equity the learners and the program of the government which is the 'education for
all'.

Sometimes technology is being used by the learners inappropriately. They tend to use the
social media to gain attention and simply for entertainment which leads to passive learning.
Young citizens turning into self-obsessed, information addicted, and spectacle-seeking
individuals with little or no sense of the grassroots and their liberating potential. There are
weaknesses inherent in the use of this medium that can pose potential threats to the success of
education most especially to those dependent learners and students who have learning
difficulties.

Moreover, I agree that education should be transformative, radical, and political. We

should be aware of the pros and cons of online learning so we can be more ready to deal with the
challenges in this new modality.
