SECTION – A
I. Annotate ANY TWO of the following in 10-15 lines each: 2x4=8
(a) Fine preparation, one might say for that most complicated of cricketing tasks - keeping wickets.
(b) The concentration of a heart surgeon, the reflexes of a fighter pilot, the guts of a boxer.
(c) I am an artist, a creator and a demi-god.
(d) I am a vessel of righteousness,
scattering seeds of justice…..

II. Answer ANY TWO of the following in 10-15 lines each: 2x4=8
(a) The demands, both mental and physical, of wicket-keeping, greatly exceed those of bating, bowling or
fielding. – Explain.
(b) How has wicket-keeping become more difficult in one-day matches?
(c) Explain the relationship between bowling and wicket-keeping with examples.
(d) Describe the use of the fly and the spider in the poem ‘A Spider and a Fly’.
III. Answer the question given below in about 25-30 lines : 1 x 8 =8
(a) Present a character sketch of Dutta, the frame maker of R.K. Lakshman.

IV. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: 5x1=5
Petroleum is a crude mineral oil. The literal meaning of the word “Petroleum” is “rock oil”. It is found
deep down below the surface of the earth. Chemists, geologists and exploration physicists work together to
locate oil. Artificial earthquakes are created near the places where they are prospecting for oil. The vibrations
created are then recorded in an instrument called the seismograph. The data obtained helps geophysicists to
locate the presence of petroleum. But the most modern method of survey is the magnetic method. A powerful
magnet is carried in an aeroplane. A deflection of the magnet indicates the presence of oil under the earth
below.
Petroleum cannot be used in its crude form. It is refined by fractional distillation. The three
important fractions are heavy oil, kerosene and crude naptha which on further fractioning give aviation petrol,
diesel oil, paraffin wax, boot polish and tar.

(a) What is the literal meaning of ‘petroleum’?


(b) Who are the scientists that are involved in locating it?
(c) What method do they adopt to location petroleum?
(d) Describe the most modern method.
(e) What is the method used for refining petroleum and what are the fractions that are obtained?
