DESIGN PROJECT: A NEW TWO-STOREY SCHOOL

1.0 Introduction

A new two-storey school building shown in plan and elevation in Figs. 1-3 is required
and you have been asked to design the structural frame.
Gables A and F are cavity brickwork. The architect requires that the external façade on
gridlines 1 and 3 be fully glazed. The wall panels between the main structural elements
externally are non-loadbearing. The panel between gridlines C and D houses a stairwell.

2.0 Design Data

A preliminary sketch of the framing plan and general arrangement of the first floor is
shown in Fig. 1. There are beams on grid lines 1, 2 and 3 and A-F. The ground floor slab
can be assumed to be ground bearing. Typical elevations of the building are indicated on
Figs. 2 and 3. The characteristic permanent and variable loads are shown in the Table.

Characteristic loads (kN/m2) Permanent Variable

Roof (including ceiling and finishes) 6.25 1.5

Floor (including finishes, screed, 1.75 + self weight to be assessed

services and suspended ceiling)

Internal partitions including finishes 3.0 -

(150 thick blockwork) (on elevation)

External cladding 1.25

(average including glazing) (on elevation)

For the purpose of this exercise the dynamic wind loading may be taken as 0.5 kN/m2.
Assume the soil is stiff clay and has an allowable gross bearing pressure of 200 kN/m2.
3.0 Work required

Students are required to work in their assigned groups and to provide drawing-office quality
design calculations and details in accordance with the European Standards (Eurocodes 0,
1, 2 etc) for a range of elements together with a design statement describing the design
philosophy assuming the frame is to be built from reinforced concrete.

3.1 General arrangement

Provide a general arrangement drawing of the first floor (A3 will be sufficient). An
accompanying design statement and drawing should explain the general framing
arrangement and how overall lateral stability is to be achieved.

3.2 Floor design

Provide design calculations and details of the 1st floor slab contained between grid lines 1
and 2.

3.3 Frame design

(a) For the following elements provide design calculations and reinforced concrete details.
Your analysis of (iii) should include consideration of longitudinal stability and your design
should clearly indicate the nature of the column end conditions assumed.
(i) Beam on grid line C
(ii) Beam C3-D3 assuming it is continuous
(iii) Ground floor column C2 including base and beam-column junction.

(b) Foundation sizing, reinforced concrete detail and bar bending schedule for base C2.

3.4 Stairwell

Provide a plan and elevation of the layout in the stairwell.

4.0 Timetable

The coursework is to be completed and submitted on or before 5pm, 4 November 2020. Any
work which fails to meet the dead line will be considered a no submission.
