of

edible oils, fats

and related products

Evaporation and Drying Technology
General Definition:

Transition from liquid to vapor phase

Related to our applications:

Separation of volatiles from

mixtures or relative thin slurries
by evaporation of this fraction.

The remaining product will be

a liquid or a dry product.

Thermal Separation Technology 3 VM/MKA / 13.5.2014

Properties of sensitive products:

• Heat sensitivity

• Viscosity

• Foaming

• Fouling

• Solids in product

Thermal Separation Technology 4 VM/MKA / 13.5.2014

Requirements for gentle separation process by
thermal evaporation:

• Short residence time

• Low temperatures

• High heat flux

• High evaporation rates

• Continuous agitation of the film for

cleaning and heat transfer purpose

 This leads to Thin Film Evaporation and Drying technology.

Thermal Separation Technology 5 VM/MKA / 13.5.2014

What is Thin-Film Evaporation ?
SMS thin-film evaporation technology
quickly

separates volatiles from less volatile components

using indirect heat transfer and

mechanical agitation of a flowing product film

within a short treatment time

under controlled conditions.

Thin Film Evaporator - Principle

Thin Film Mechanism

• High film turbulence

rotor blades
thin liquid film • Rapid film renewal

• Increased heat & mass transfer

• Controlled residence time

heated wall • High squeezing factor

bow wave

• Viscosity up to 20 kPa*s

Solution for temperature sensitive products

Special requirements of the product mixture:

• Very high boiling temperature of volatiles

• Temperature sensitive components

 Very low vacuum has to be applied:

≥ 0,001 mbar (abs)

This pressure range cannot be handled by

Thin Film Evaporators with external condensers!

Application 2: Distilled Monoglyceride

Monoglyceride is the most frequently applied emulsifier in foods,

such as

• Bakery products • Ice-cream

• Cooking ingredient • Chocolate
• Sweets • Packing material for food (cheese)
• Chewing Gum • Pasta etc.
• Margarine

Mono-Glycerides are also used in composing pharmaceutical

products and cosmetics plus a variety of technical applications.

Application 3: Glycerine Distillation

Purpose:
Producing Glycerine of pharmaceutical grade by Thin Film
Evaporation and Distillation.

Process Steps:
 Elimination of excessive water to < 1 %
 Distillation of Glycerine in a special developed distillation
column
 Squeezing of the column bottom by means of our Vertical
Thin Film Evaporator for the highest Glycerine yield
 Deodorising of Glycerine
 Bleaching for pharmaceutical grade
