TOPIC

Real Life Applications of Differential Equations, Laplace Transform and

Fourier Transform Computer Science & Engineering.

Differential Equations, Fourier Transform and Laplace Transform are the three
indispensable branches of Mathematics. We cannot imagine modern science, engineering
and technology without the Differential usages these three important branches.

Introduction
Introduction of Differential Equations, Laplace Transform and Fourier
Transform Computer Science & Engineering are given below:

Differential Equation: Basic concepts, Solution of first order and first

degree ODE (separation of variables, Homogeneous Equation, reducible to
homogeneous, linear equation, Bernoulli’s equations). Solution of linear
model differential equations, Solutions of general linear equations of
second and higher order with constant coefficients (with IVP). Solution of
homogeneous linear equations and their applications.
Differential equation is the relationship between functions and their derivatives
where functions represents the physical quantities and derivatives represent their
rate of change. The world around us is governed by differential equations,
scientific computing will generally rely on a differential equation and its
Numerical solution and simulations. Engineers designed car, train, plane, rocket
using finite element analysis (FEA) to ensure that it can handle stresses
encountered in even extreme cases, and FEA is essentially utilizing a computer to
model the stresses by solving a partial differential equation (PDE) across a body
numerically. In game development differential equation is use to model the
velocity of a character. Computer graphics and Geometric processing PDE is
needed. Modelling of physical phenomena, damping, artificial intelligence,
robotics, computer manufacturing, machine learning, animation etc.
Fourier Transformation: Real and complex form of Fourier series,
Finite transform, Fourier Integral, Fourier Transform in solving BVP of wave
equations and Heat Equation, properties of Fourier Transform, DFT.

Laplace transform is an integral that converts a function of a real variable to a

function of a complex variable that means a function in some domain into a
function in another domain without changing the value of the function. In
computer science Laplace transform has many applications, a simple Laplace
Transform is conducted while sending signals over any two-way communication
medium (FM/AM stereo, 2-way radio sets, cellular phones), system modelling,
digital signal processing, nuclear physics, process control, analysis of HVAC
(Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), data mining/machine learning etc.

Laplace Transformations: In mathematics, the Laplace transform,

named after its inventor Pierre-Simon Laplace , is an integral transform that
converts a function of a real variable(often time) to a function of a complex
variable.

Fourier Transform is a power full mathematical tool that decomposes a function into
its constituent frequencies. It has many usages in computer science like image
processing, data compression, digital signal processing, and analysis of algorithms,
analyze DNA, cell phones, image recognition, noise cancellation/reduction,
fingerprint detection etc.

Objectives of the Study

As a student of computer science and engineering one has the phobia about
mathematics and I have a question always why I should learn mathematics
specially Differential Equation, Laplace Transform and Fourier Transform the three
special branches of mathematics. We cannot imagine modern science, engineering
and technology without the mercy of mathematics. At first eliminating the phobia
on it, secondly introduce the beauty of mathematics with numerous real world
applications- scientific computing, numerical solution and simulations, designing
car, train, plane, rocket, game development, Computer graphics, modelling of
physical phenomena, damping, artificial intelligence, robotics, computer
manufacturing, machine learning, animation, analysis of HVAC, process control,
digital signal processing, system modelling, image processing, data compression,
analysis of algorithms, analyze DNA, cell phones, image recognition, noise
cancellation, fingerprint footprint detection etc. in computer science and
engineering. Thirdly, students will cope up and prepare themselves to solve
various types of mathematical problems based on Differential Equation, Laplace
Transform and Fourier Transform. They will learn how mathematics is closely
connected CSE.

Learning Outcomes

After the successful completion of this course we will learn numerous things of
mathematics and their applications in Computer Science and Engineering:

They could developed their basics on Differential Equation, Laplace

Transform and Fourier Transform.
They will be able to solve various types of mathematical problems based on
formation of differential equations and differential equations of first order
and first degree (separation method, homogeneous and nonhomogeneous
differential equation, standard form of linear differential equation,
Bernoulli’s equation), linear differential equations of second and higher
order with constant coefficients (with IVP), homogeneous linear differential
equations and their applications.

They will be able to find Fourier series of various types of periodic functions
odd/even/none, solve different problems on Fourier transform finite/infinite
case. BVP of wave equations and Heat equations. DFT.

They will be capable to solve different types of mathematical problems on

Laplace transform and inverse Laplace transform by applying their
properties and convolution theorem, also partial fraction, solving differential
equations by using Laplace transform.
They will be able to apply their acquired knowledge in their real
life applications in CSE.

Real Life Applications of Differential Equations, Laplace Transform

and Fourier Transform in CSE

We can apply differential equation, Laplace transform and Fourier transform in

CSE in real life .There are many sector we can apply this :

Computer Graphics : Differential equations is an essential tool for

describing the nature of the physical universe and naturally also an
essential part of models for computer graphics and vision. Some
examples are: light rays, which follow the shortest path, and are
conveniently described using the Euler-Lagrange (differential) Equations.
Robotics: second-order differential equation can evolve into a complex
dynamic model of a multiple-degrees-of-freedom robotic manipulator
that includes the controls.
Artificial Intelligence: scientific structures as a modeling basis for
machine learning. 30. For example, neural ordinary differential
equations are initial.
Scientific computing: scientific computing are applied mathematical
techniques for modeling physical systems.

Image processing: Brief Description. The Fourier Transform is an

important image processing tool which is used to decompose an image
into its sine and cosine components. The output of the transformation
represents the image in the Fourier or frequency domain, while the input
image is the spatial domain equivalent.
Numerical solution and simulations: Numerical methods often
depended on hand interpolation formulas applied to data from large ...
Such simulations essentially consist of solving partial differential equations
numerically.
Fingerprint ditaction: Fingerprint Recognition is one of the area in
which we can design different algorithms and recognition systems using
Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). using Partial Differential Equations
(PDEs). Equations are discussed as under. and most widely used biometric
technologies. Etc

Designing car, train, plane, rocket: Laplace Transform is used to

simplify calculations in system modeling, where large number of
differential equations are used.
Modelling of Physical Phenomena: Zill introduces a number of
differential equations which serve as mathematical models of
various physical systems and phenomena.
Animation: Math is very important in computer animation. While there
is a lot of focus on art and storytelling in animated films.
Game Development : Differential equations like navier-stokes
equations are used in game development. Differential equations are used
in games having fluid dynamics like games having complete scenery (GTA,
nfs, dota2 etc.) and are used in games having strange attractor (chaotic
behavior) like (pinball etc.).

Conclusion
We can already see that Differential Equations, Laplace Transform and Fourier
Transform how many important for computer science , Differential Equations,
Laplace Transform and Fourier Transform is present in the foundation of Computer
Science. And if we want to succeed in any discipline of Computer Science, it is
much better to inculcate a love of Mathematics as that will help us tremendously.
Computer Science is an umbrella term that contains many disciplines like
Operating Systems, Databases, Networking, Artificial intelligence, Embedded
systems, Data analytics. And while there are some disciplines that we can handle
with minimal knowledge of Mathematics, most of them require at least some level
of competency. Differential Equations, Laplace Transform and Fourier Transform is
most important part of Mathematics and According to Oxford University
Mathematics is a fundamental intellectual tool in computing, but computing is also
increasingly used as a key component in mathematical problem-solving.
