UNIT:II ( Bolted connection)
1) An ISA 90x90x6 mm is required to connect G.P of 8 mm thick to carry axial tension
factored force of 90 kN. Find Nos. of 20 mm Dia. M4.6 grade bolts required for
connection along with pitch and edge distance. Consider Machine Cut plate. Consider
pitch of thread in bolt = 2.5mm.

2) Determine bolt value of 20 mm diameter bolt connecting 10 mm plate in (1) Single Shear
(2) Double Shear. Take grade of bolt 4.6 and grade of plate 410 MPa.

3) Design a single bolted double cover butt joint to connect plates of


thickness 12 mm for maximum efficiency. Use M20 bolts of grade 4.6. Plates are of
Fe410 grade. Find the efficiency of the joint.

4) A member of steel roof truss carries a tensile load of 200kN consist 2 ISA 80x
80x 6 mm placed back to back on either side of 8mm thick gusset plate. Design bolted
joint using 20mm diameter 4.6 grade blots.

5) ISA 125 x 75 x 8 mm is required to be connected to 8 mm th. G.P in order to transfer


axial tension factored force of 160 kN. Assume Longer Leg is connected to G.P. Using 20
mm Dia M 4.6 grade bolt , Design the Bolted connection. Consider Fu = 410 N/mm2.
Assume machine cut plate and pitch of thread = 2.5 mm.

6) Two 8 mm. thick plates are connected by a single bolted lap joint with 20 mm. dia.
Bolts. Pitch of the bolts is 60 mm. Calculate the efficiency of joint. Take fu of the plates
410 Mpa and 4.6 grade bolts.

7) A member of steel roof truss carries a tensile load of 180 kN, consist of 2ISA 90x90x6
mm placed back to back on either side of 8mm thick gusset plate. Design bolted joint
using 20mm diameter 4.6 grade bolts.

8) Two plates 100x10 mm and 100x12 mm are connected by lap joint, to resist tensile load
of 110 Kn. Design a lap joint using M-16 bolts of grade 4.6 & grade410 plates. Draw
figure showing detailed connection
9) Determine bolt value in double shear of 20mm dia 4.6 grade bolt connecting 10mm thick
plates of grade 410Mpa.

UNIT:III (welded connection)
(1) Design 4mm size fillet weld to connect a plate 80mm x 10mm to a 12mm thick gusset plate
to transfer 100kN load. Assume shop welding of Fe410 on sides only.

(2) A tension member ISA 125x75x8 mm is subjected to an axial pull of 110 KN. Its longer leg is
connected to 8 mm thick gusset plate. Design the welded connection using 4 mm size weld. Use
Fe 410 grade steel. Show the design by sketch.

(3) An ISA 100x75x8 mm is to be connected to 8mm thick gusset plate with 100mm leg
connected by 4mm size weld to transfer an axial tensile force of 200 kN. Design welded
connection with weld on sides only. Assume shop welding.

(4) Angle section ISA 75 X 75 X 8 is to be connected 8 mm. thick gusset plate by 6 mm. field
weld, on sides and end of the member. The member is carrying tensile load of 100 KN. Design
welded connection. Assume steel grade Fe 410.

(5) In a truss, ISA 80x80x8 mm is subjected to the factored tension of 175 kN. It is to be
connected to a gusset plate using fillet welds at the toe and back. Design welded connection
using 6 mm fillet weld. Consider field fabrication with Fe410 steel.

(6) An ISA 150x75x8 is to be connected to 8mm thick gusset plate with 150mm leg connected by
4mm size weld to transfer an axial tensile force of 250kN. Design welded connection with weld
on sides only. Assume shop welding.

(7) A tension member of a roof truss consisting of ISA 100x75x10 mm. The angles are connected to
either side of a 10 mm gusset plate and members subjected to a working pul of 200 kN. Design the
welded connection, connection being done in workshop.

(8) Determine the tensile strength of an angle ISA 100X75X6 mm connected to the gusset plate
by 4 mm welds at toe and back by 140 mm and 310 mm weld respectively. Take fy = 250 MPa.

(9) Design fillet weld to connect a plate 200mm x 10mm to a 12mm thick gusset plate to transfer
100kN load. Assume shop welding of Fe410 on sides only.

(10) Angle section ISA 110 X 110 X 8 is to be connected 8 mm. thick gusset plate by 8 mm field
weld, on sides and end of the member. The member is carrying tensile load of 200 KN. Design
welded connection. Assume steel grade Fe 410.

(11) A tension member ISA 150x75x10 mm is subjected to an axial pull of 200 KN. Its longer leg
is connected to 10mm thick gusset plate. Design the welded connection using 6mm size weld. Use
Fe 410 grade steel. Show the design by sketch.

UNIT:IV (Design of Tension Member)

(1) Determine strength of tension member ISA 100 x 75 x 6mm with longer leg connected to
the 8mm thick gusset plate by 4mm size weld. The length of the weld is 140mm length at toe and
310mm length at back.

(2) An ISA 125x75x8 mm is connected to 8 mm th. G.P by shorter leg using 4 Nos. 16 mm dia
M4.6 grade bolts with a pitch of 40 mm and edge distance of 30 mm . Find Tension force
carrying capacity of the member.

(3) Design single Equal Angle section to carry axial factored tension force of 180 kN .
Consider 5 Nos. 20 mm dia M 4.6 grade bolts with pitch of 50 mm and edge distance of 40 mm
for connection between angle section & G.P

(4) Find Tension force carrying capacity of 2 ISA 100x100x8 mm provided on either side of 8
mm G.P. Consider average weld length of 200 mm of size 4 mm.

(5) Determine the tensile strength of an angle ISA 100X75X6 mm connected to the gusset plate
by 4 mm welds at toe and back by 140mm and 310 mm weld respectively. Take fy = 250 MPa.

(6) Design a double angle either side of gusset plate for a roof truss. The member is subjected
to a factored tensile load of 300 kN. Use 20 mm diameter bolt and fy= 250 MPa.

(7) Design a tension member to carry a factored load of 400 kN. Use 20 mm diameter
black bolts and a gusset plate of 8mm thick.

(8) Determine the tensile strength of an angle ISA 90x60x6 mm connected to longer leg to
the 8mm gusset plate with 4 numbers – 16mm diameter bolts.

(9) Find out Axial Tension Force carried by ISA 100 x 75 x 8 mm if it is connected to 8 mm
th. G.P.by longer Leg. Assume average weld length is 250 mm.

(10) Design single unequal angle section to carry axial factored tension force of 120 kN.
Assume Longer leg is connected and 4 Nos. 20 mm dia of M4.6 Grade bolts are used with a pitch
of 50 mm and with edge distance of 40 mm.

(11) Find the ultimate design strength of an ISA 80x80x8 in tension which is connected to
a gusset 10 mm thick using 7 nos. of M20 bolts ( pitch 50 mm, end distance 30 mm) placed in a
row. Consider Fe410 steel.
(12) Determine the design tensile strength of steel plate 240 X 8 mm connected to 10 mm.
thick Gusset using 20 mm. dia. Bolts as shown in Fig.- 1.Take fy=250 Mpa ,fu =410 Mpa.

(13) Design single angle (equal) to carry a design tensile load of 175 KN Length of the
member = 2.0 m. Assume steel grade =Fe410. Also check for block shear failure. Use bolted
connection.

(14) Determine the tensile strength of an angle ISA 125x75x6mm connected at longer leg to
the 8mm thick gusset plate with 4 Nos. –20mm diameter bolts.
(15) Design a tension member, using two angle section on both the side of gusset plate,
subjected to factored tensile load of 320 Kn. Assume fy = 250 MPa and 16 mm diameter bolts.

UNIT:V (Design of Compression Member)

(1) Calculate the compressive strength of a single angle strut ISA 100 x 75 x 10mm with centre
to centre length 1.5m. Angle is loaded through one leg and its ends are fixed. Consider one bolt
at each end. Take fy=250N/mm2 and λe=1.16, φ = 1.41.

(2) An ISHB 400 @ 822 N/m is used as short column. Determine compressive strength using
Fe410 steel and fy=250N/mm2.

(3) Find Compressive force carrying capacity of ISA 100x75x8 mm if longer leg is connected to
8 mm G.P . Consider effective length of member = 1.7 m

(4) Design a column using double channels provided back to back to carry axial factored
compressive force of 1000 kN . The unsupported length of column is 5.5 m and its both ends are
fixed.

(5) Find axial compressive force carrying capacity of column made up of ISHB 400 @ 77.4
kg/m if effective length of column is 4.8 m

(6) A single ISA 100x65x6 mm is used as a single strut with c/c length 1.8 m. It is loaded
through one leg and ends are fixed. Find out compressive strength of strut, considering one bolt
at each end. Take fy = 250 MPa.

(7) A steel column is carrying factored axial load of 1400 Kn. Design the column using ISHB
section having length 3.5 m. It is restrained in translation and free in rotation at both ends.

(8)Design a single angle discontinuous strut to carry a factored load of 70 Kn, having distance
between its joint as 3 m. Take fy = 250 MPa

(9) Design a double angle discontinuous strut having 2.5m length to carry a factored
compressive load of 150 kN. The angles are connected back to back on opposite side of gusset
plate and are tack bolted.

(10) Determine the compressive strength of ISA 90x90x8mm having 2m length. The ends of the
member are hinged and load is applied concentrically.

(11) Determine the design axial load on the column section ISMB 300 having 4m height and
fixed at both ends.

UNIT VI (Lacing, battening and column bases)
1. Design a single lacing system for column composed of 2ISMC 350 placed back to back
at a clear spacing of 250mm and carrying axial compressive load of 1000kN. Effective
length of column is 4m.

2. Design a slab base foundation for a column ISHB 400@ 822 N/m to carry axial load of
1600kN. Assume Fe410 grade steel and M20 concrete. Take Safe Bearing Capacity of
soil as 220 kN/m2.

3. A composite column consists of 2ISMC 300 placed back to back at distance 200 mm
apart. Column carries load of 1500 kN and effective length 5m. Design suitable single
lacing system. Take inclination of lacing bar 45°.
4. Design a slab base for column with the following data: (1) Column Section
ISHB300@63kg/m (2) Axial load on column 2700 kN. (3) Bearing capacity of soil 200
kN/m2. Permissible compressive stress of concrete 4 N.mm2..

5. A composite column consist of 2ISMC 350 placed back to back at distance 220mm apart.
Column carries load of 1200 kN and effective length 4m. Design suitable single lacing
system. Take inclination of lacing bar 45°.

6. Design a slab base (with concrete pedestal) for a column section ISHB 250@ 51 kg/m
carrying a axial compressive load of 1000 kN. Consider M20 concrete grade and Fe410
steel. Assume safe bearing capacity of soil as 150 kN/m².
7. 2 ISMC 250 @ 60.8 kg/m have been used as a built up column subjected to factored axial
compressive load of 1100 kN, placed back to back with 160mm spacing between webs.
Design a lacing bar for the single lacing system, and check it for slenderness ratio, and
the load carrying capacity in tension and compression. Assume bolted connection and
Fe410 steel.
8. Design and detail a slab base foundation for column ISHB 300 (58.8 kg/m) carrying
factored axial load of 1000 KN. Assume steel grade Fe 410 Concrete grade M 20 and
safe bearing capacity of soil is 180 KN/m2. Use welded connection.
9. Design a single lacing system for a column composed of 2ISMC 350 placed back to back
at a clear spacing of 220mm. Effective length of column is 6m. The axial load on column
is 1800 kN. Use blots for end connection. Do not check lacing for tensile and
compressive strength.
10. Design a slab base foundation for a column ISHB 300 to carry a factored axial load of
1000 kN. Assume M20 concrete and safe bearing capacity of soil as 250 kN/m2.

UNIT:VII (lateral restrained beam & purlin )
1. Define and explain in brief shape factor.
2. Prove that shape factor for beam having rectangular section is 1.5
3. Desing an angle section for a purlin having 3.0 mt span , it carries design load (working)
of 2.5 kn/m and supported on four supports. Angle of roof truss is 260
4. Desing unequal angle section purlin when spacing of roof truss is 3.25 meter. The purlin
is subjected to factored design load of 8 kn/m including its self weight. The angle of roof
truss is 26.56 degree. Use fy= 250N/mm2
5. Design a simply supported beam span 6m carrying working loads of DL= 15kn/m. assum
that the compression flange of the beam is laterally restrained throughout.
6. Design a cantilever beam to carry design factored load of 30 kn/m which include its self
weight . The effective span of beam is 1.25 m

1. Calculate Wind Load for above Roof truss with following data:
