What I Need to know???

Fictional elements have always been described as having a setting,
descriptive imagery, figurative language, plot, and character. The overarching
element that distinguishes from any other genre of writing is that Nonfiction is, by
definition, true. Knowing some other elements of nonfiction will be achieved by
getting to know the elements of news stories
What’s new???

TODAY’S LESSON: ELEMENTS OFNEWSTORY(Nonfiction)

News story writing can be intimidating for a beginning writer. You may be asking
when, where and how to begin. Making one story original do matters in the
audiences. Do’s and don’ts are considerable things in writing but when it comes to
crafting a story, focusing on the important rather than worrying about what maybe
doing wrong.

Giving you the eight elements that will guide you as a beginner:

1. Immediacy- Is it current, unique, impactful, and latest information to the readers?

2. Proximity-Does the news touch the idea of locality to the readership or close to their hearts?
3. Prominence-Is the information or news about something that is highly topical today? Is it about
something / someone that people believe to be of great significance or importance?
4.Oddity-Is it something strange, out of the ordinary, or unusual?
5. Conflict-Does it have an element of struggle, addresses real challenge that significantly impact lives
of people?
6. Suspense- Does it have an element of excitement and suspense that create readers of wanting more?
7.Emotion-Does it speak of people's experiences and conveys real emotion genuine and a little bit more
human in communication?
8. Consequence- Does the subject of the story have an impact on people's lives?

PRACTICE EXERCISES
Today’s Tasks:

1: From any medium of communication you have at home, write down some means or
materials that you can start writing your news story. Explain where and how are you going to use it?

Materials/ Equipment When, Where, and How to use it

Spare notebooks *when: during the day or afternoon, since I need a source
of light, I’m not very prominent with small amount of
light when it comes to writing any literary work. (Unless
its laptop, computer, or phone... which can create
decently massive light)
*where: could be anywhere that’s not crowded, loud,
frisky, or wet.
*How: write on it, obviously.
Smartphone *when: wouldn’t really be a problem to me since I have
my phone on me, except when I’m sleeping. I also
usually have spare time to write, since it’s already fall
season and school activities are being given out.
*where: anywhere you’re allowed to use your phone.
*How: I use apps like “Notebook”, “Transno”, “Pure
Writer”, and “Evernote”. I use different apps since I have
different needs and a specific aesthetic and purpose, I
follow per app.
Corners or margins of books I’ve read *when: when I have the energy to read a physical book.
*where: at home. I don’t like showing people I write on
books because they’d think it’s weird.
*How: When I have certain opinions on a dialogue, an
action done by a character, monologue, or anything from
the book, I write them just beside it. Unless it’s not my
book, I won’t write on it.
Messenger App *when: during times when I have a sudden jolt of idea
rushing in me, I just subconsciously open the messenger
app.
*Where: anywhere. Even in outer space.
*how: open my phone. Find the app on my folder. Tap
on the icon. Find my private chatroom. Type in the
creative juices. Send.

2. Can you write and explain something about this picture using any of the three news
story elements discussed? It’s okay if isn’t perfect. At least you try.

Apocalypse Sinking
1. Has it happened? Yes, in the span of almost more than 10 months we have already
experienced the life of dangers of the virus that could be present in each and everyone of
us.

2. Is your information or news about something that is highly topical today? Yes, it involves health-
related issues and political actions that should be done to prevent the spread. Why would the public
not be aware of such event going on in their life that is drastically negatively impacting the
society?

3. Is there an element of struggle in your story? Yes, it’s obviously prominent in fact, since some
country’s governments struggle to decrease the number of cases. Political actions done here in the
Philippines are absurd since they are acting as if the virus is a human being and not something that
should be dealt with scientifically, medically.
APPLICATION

What I can do???.

Teenagers and teenagers’ alike love to use vapes without knowing its effect on their body,
due to some issues in using vapes it was mandated as effective that
“Pasay City prohibits vaping in government offices, hospitals and health care centers, places
of worship, educational and recreational facilities, and transportation” .

Vaping in public now banned in Pasay City

Manila Philippines-The Pasay City government passed an ordinance prohibiting the use of
vaping devices in enclosed public spaces.
City Ordinance No. 6061 bans the use of vaping devices in government offices, hospitals and
health care centers, places of worship, educational and recreational facilities, and public
conveyances or transportation.
Using vaping devices in all other enclosed public spaces is allowed, and in private
establishments as long as their owners designate a vaping area within the premises.
The ordinance also prohibits the sale of e-cigarette products to minors.
Violators will have to pay P2,000 to P4,000 or serve 12 to 24 hours of community service.
"It is high time to impose stricter measures on these substances to protect the youth and the
general public against the ill effects of cigarette smoking and vaping," quoted Pasay City Mayor
Emi Calixto Rubiano as saying.
This comes as the Department of Health (DOH) and medical professionals call for a ban on
vaping devices and e-cigarettes, citing health hazards reported in the United States, where at
least 39 have died due to vaping-related lung illness. The DOH in October urged medical
practitioners to include vaping in their line of questioning when recording patients' medical
histories.
This would help in capturing data on vaping-related disorders and also guide policy-making on
e- cigarettes, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
The DOH is facing a temporary setback in its implementation of an administrative order that
regulates e-cigarettes, following the issuance of court injunctions against DOH Administrative
Order (AO) No. 2019-0007
The AO, released on June 14, requires manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of e-cigarettes to
first secure a license to operate from the Food and Drug Administration before going into
business.

MODULE IN CREATIVE NONFICTION

First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day2

Learning Competency: Distinguish factual / non-fictional elements in the text (plot, characters,
characterization, point of view, angle, setting and atmosphere, symbols and symbolisms, irony, fig
of speech, dialogue, scene, other elements and devices). HUMSS_CNF 11/12 II a 16

What I Need to know???

Non-fiction is time consuming rather than writing a fiction as it requires a lot of
reading and researching before coming up with a good findings and discussion and
putting up them down on the paper. On the other hand, fiction requires fleshing out
characters and stories, which is to be likened by the readers. Delving into differences
of the two will be discussed in this lesson through text features. Remember that all
elements are good to use in both.

What’s new???
TODAY’S LESSON: TEXT FEATURES

Text features help the reader make sense of what they are reading. It is simply how
author organizes the information within the text.
1. Problem Solving-The author introduces the problem and tells how it could be fixed (e.g.
poor network-PLDT Fiber).
2. Cause and Effect- The author describes something that that has happened which has had
an effect or caused something else to happen. Effect may be good or bad (e.g. covid-190.
3. Compare and Contrast- the author’s purpose is to show how things are the same and
different by comparing the two (e.g. the 2nd world war and the world war C).
4. Description/List- common but trickiest text structure because of information overload
on the part of the readers. It is the readers themselves to determine relevant and interesting
(e.g Blended Learning accounts).
5. Time Order/Sequence- all texts are written in an order of occurrence may it be fiction or
nonfiction. It is the author’s style how it is being presented.
Haven’t you notice that these text features are both used in writing fictional and non-
fictional stories? Having all the elements as previously discussed like plot, characters,
characterization, point of view, angle, setting and atmosphere, symbols and symbolisms, irony,
fig of speech, dialogue, scene, other elements within these features.
Find time to search links below to fully understand how text features help to distinguish uses of
elements to both fiction and nonfiction writing.

MODULE IN CREATIVE NONFICTION

First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day3

Learning Objective: Infer factual / non-fictional elements in the text (plot, characters,
characterization, point of view, angle, setting and atmosphere, symbols and symbolisms, irony,
fig of speech, dialogue, scene, other elements and devices)

What I Need to know???

Making inferences in nonfictional text requires lots of evidences. Text
maybe taken from a book, article or in any other newspaper or magazines
that gives a reader facts about a topic. It is also an inference if a piece of
information is indirectly given but understood from its context coupled with experiences.

What’s new???
TODAY’S LESSON: MAKING INFERRENCES FROM NONFICTIONAL TEXT

The very goal of inferences is to draw all the information out of the text. Information is intentionally
put together so that readers would get to interact with it.

Three Steps of Drawing Inferences

1. Identify the text type - look at the text and figure out what kind of information the author is
trying to present. Is it a fictional story? Is it an editorial of their opinions? Is it the results of scientific
study? Is it a poem? Is it a textbook meant to educate the general public? Think about what kind of text
this is and what the author's goals are likely to be in a text of this kind.

2. Look for Clues-look for clues to help confirm or disprove theories, this involves critical
reading on how the passage was constructed, look for specific words which become the descriptors that
may help mind frame a picture and rely on assumption about the readers past experiences to help infer
information.

3. It All Together-analyze the direct inferred information in the text.. It is needed to start
thinking about the author is telling directly, as well as what he or she is choosing to omit.

There are many types of spider out there, but this particular spider can live underwater. Through its way
making its nest in an enclosed bell-shaped form, the spider then swims up to the surface to gather air bubble
using its hairy legs. After creating its home, the spider will live off of small fish and tiny sea creatures.

We seldom notice that while walking in busy streets thoughts

that is called inferring ideas. Learning to draw conclusions and
inferences
is a skill that can never be developed over time. The skill requires putting together various
pieces of information, and relies on good word knowledge, providing some experiences and
inferential information which may lead to draw conclusions based on evidences.
EVALUATION

Now it’s your turn!!!

MAKE THINKING CLEAR:

Read the selection closely to determine what the text says explicitly then make logical
inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing to support conclusions drawn
from the text. Selection is on the next page.

1. What is the main idea of the passage? I believe it tells of a person in a state of
vindication, wherein they are suffering/
struggling to find a certain pang on passion
towards living in true fame. Seeing from his
choice of words, I’m taking in to accountability
of how he is looking for a shed of light for his
dark self. He describes himself as famished / a
person suffering in famine, he has hunger for
passion, and his driven-self leads him to
ignorance and fear.

2. What is the author’s point of view? They could be going through a rough patch, they
seem to seek something worth to be self-
motivated, a drive for passion. They feel as
though they are famished, starved by themselves.

3. What caused him to be a famine of one? I guess from their statements they seem to have
driven themselves out, tired themselves. Their
sense of passion is what they crave for, but
because they’ve built these sort of walls
impenetrable by the idea of growing old and
having one life, they seem to crave for what they
want, which is passion.

4. Why did the writer write this? They are needy, craving for passion. They
portray themselves as a starved famished
individual begging for what they want/ need.

to plot, settings, and characters created from the imagination,
while nonfiction refers to factual stories focused on actual events and people.
Fiction is fabricated and based on the author’s imagination, in the
contrary nonfiction is based on the life story event.
