¡Los juegos olímpicos del español!

Instrucciones: You are about to participate in the ultimate SPANISH

OLYMPICS! You are working in groups of 4 as competing paises (countries).
1. When we begin, the lector will read the first clue in English aloud. Your table will then translate the
sentence into Spanish and the escritor will write it on your clue paper. When you feel confident that
your sentence is completely correct, the capitán will SILENTLY raise your flag and keep the flag
raised in the air until a checker checks your work. If your sentence is correct, the checker will
prompt you to move to the next round, give your team a check next to that sentence and move on to
to your next clue. If it is not correct, the checker will give you a clue of how the sentence must be
fixed and you’ll need it checked again once you’ve fixed it.

2. Everyone in your pais has a different role. When I tell you to, select who will be each role. If you
only have three people, one person can be the Embajador and the Lector.
a. Capitán – This person is the spokesperson for your country and is the only one who can raise
the flag when your team is ready with their answer. The capitán must make sure that all the
rules are followed and each group member is doing ONLY what THEIR role asks them to.
¿Quién es? ____________________________
b. Embajador – This person is responsible for guarding the team’s clues and will ensure that
their group does not go on to the next clue until they have gotten a check from a checker and
that their group has been told to move on to the next clue.
¿Quién es? ____________________________
c. Lector – This person will read each English clue. The clue page will be in their hands after
given to them by the embajador. ¿Quién es? ____________________________
d. Escritor – This person will write the team’s answer to each clue on the clue page. No other
teammate may write any of the answers.
¿Quién es? ____________________________

2. The embajador will, with input from the group, pick which country your table represents in the
Olympics and make a flag for that country. It does not have to be the same as the country’s actual
flag but must have a real Spanish-speaking country’s name written on it. This flag will be raised to
signal your team is ready for a checker to check their answer, give them a check and allow them to
move on to the next clue. This person can also raise their flag for three “phone-a-friends” and, once
approved, you may use notes for those three clues ONLY!

3. When your sentence is correct, a checker will tell you to move on to the next clue, which should be
guarded by the embajador and will get his or her team disqualified if anyone works on more than one
clue out at a time. The embajador hands off the clue page to the lector, and the process begins all
over again. There are 28 clues altogether.

4. The team that earns the most checks or finishes all of their sentences correctly first wins! The
game is not over until the capitán places their team’s flag on the board after getting teacher
approval of the final sentence. The first team to finish wins gold, the second, silver, and the third,
bronze.

*DQ’s – Your team will be DISQUALIFIED if you are not dividing the work according to the
roles, using notes without “phoning a friend”, taking out more than one clue at a time, acting
unsportsmanlike or demonstrating overly rowdy and/or inappropriate behavior.*
