Session 1 – Overview – What is Radio Presenting all about? [1

hour]

Aim: Get to know the group / Introduction to Radio / Who

listens & define audience / Create a show

Icebreaker [5 – 10 mins]: Get group to introduce themselves & say one ‘colourful’ thing
about their personality etc. – “If you were a gadget what kind of gadget would you be?”
i.e. that describes your personality.

1. Icebreaker [10 mins]: Mime Whispers; stand in a row facing back

(away from leader) first person in row turns round is given a
word to mime to next person, they then have to pass on the
mime (their interpretation) to the next person. The last person
reports to the leader what they believe they are miming.
2. Radio Survey [15 mins]: Get young people into groups of 2 or 3.
To complete the survey first for themselves and then to discuss
what they think for their: friends/peers / parents / grandparents /
younger brothers & sisters.
a. How do you listen to radio? Internet / Satalite / DAB / FM /
AM
b. What time of day do you listen?
c. What kind of music mix?
d. Percentage of the preference of Music to Talk?
e. Favourite presenter/DJ’s?

3. Feedback on Radio Survey; use flip-chart or OHP.

4 What Radio Presenting is or is not! [15 mins] Some of this should hopefully be
able to be drawn out of the survey previously) (Use prepared PowerPoint/OHP or
Flipchart) Three rules!
a. It is not an outlet to play your music!
i. Although hopefully your taste in music will influence
what you play, but should not be all that you play –
remember you are there to entertain not encourage
people to switch off.
b. Your show should entertain before it informs!
i. Safe for all ages to listen too. Remember people can
listen in all shapes and sizes! You only have 30
seconds to capture them – short meaningful sound
bites work best in a music show rather than long
presenter waffle!
ii. Remember too that people will often listen to radio in
the quiet of their own room or alone in the car – it is
a wonderful opportunity for God to speak through
what you say & play - as often defences are down –
so don’t do anything that is likely to put the defences
up.
c. Know the purpose of your show
i. If it is primarily a music show then avoid long DJ talk.
Keep talk to the point. In a talk / Discussion show –
planning is the key!
ii. Define your audience
iii. Plan Pray Plan Pray
b. Your listener is;
i. TALK – natural, don’t read or shout
ii. TO - On your level, so don’t talk down too, or at like
you givin commands
iii. A – one person, not a crowd
iv. FRIEND - not just anyone so SMILE!

5. Creating your show: [30 mins]

a. Give out 2 - 3 newspapers per group
b. Also a sheet of paper with their audience (remind: it’s not
about them but their audience)
c. Flip chart sheet per group & prit stick glue
d. Challenge find pictures & stories related to their audience /
stick & arrange on the flip-chart sheet.

This is now your Programme cue sheet to remind you of who
your show is for!

a. Pray & Plan your show; (present this on same or second flip
chart sheet)
i. Considering your target audience – name for your
show
ii. Type of show – music/talk
iii. Content – Music & Talk segments
iv. Presenter & non-presenting roles
1. i.e. producer, researcher, etc.
b. Feedback from groups – different shows etc.

6. Finish: link to next Session:

a. Presenter/ Programme & Studio Roles
b. Interviewing
c. Using tools – Voice Tracking
d. Using Station Clocks

Session 2 – Getting the show together

Aim: To define presenter team roles – both on-air & off-air

To start to put some content together for the show (hour)

To introduce interview techniques

To introduce radio tools – mini disk & voice tracking editing

(adobe audition)
