The Qualities and Competencies of Music Teachers

1. What personal characteristics do you possess that you think will help you become a
successful music teacher?

I have had a passion for music and learning since when I was a kid and when it comes to
choosing what career to take, my best option is to pursue my passion to the fullest. Also, I do
have a passion to teach music to my students.

2. What personal characteristics do you possess that should be strengthened so that you can
become a successful music teacher?

Patience. I am very impatient. This is something I need to practice and to be

strengthened. I have taught a class of students, my grade 7 music students, 2-3 students who
never seemed to understand a simple concept about our topic. But as time goes by, I have
realized that each student is unique, they develop their musical abilities at different rates, so I
need to understand them and also to help students who need more assistance.

3. What musical attributes do you possess that will help or hinder you in being a successful
music teacher?

My love for music. This will help me become a successful music teacher. We music
teachers must be passionate about our subject matter. As we show love and having the
expertise in teaching music, this will inspire, encourage our students and make our lessons
more meaningful to them. The love of teaching music will also help us teachers to do our
best to help us enjoy what we are doing.

4. If you could make the same amount of money singing or playing as a performer as you
could teach music, would you rather perform or teach? Can you explain the choice you
made?

I would rather teach music in order to acquire a stable job. Because I have a friend who is a
DepEd teacher before but he resigned from his job and started performing and started his
business (music tutorials) but due to this pandemic, most of the occasion where he must perform
were all canceled and some of his students stopped enrolling in his music tutorials. But if you’re
a performer, I think teaching will just follow.
