Objective To develop the CFI students understanding of the elements of Logbook Entries and
Endorsements.
Completion This lesson will be complete when the student demonstrates an understanding of the
Standards elements related to Logbook Entries and Certificate Endorsements.
WHAT? –A logbook entry or certificate endorsement is a signed testimony that an instructor has provided a
stated amount of training to an individual and that individual has a level of knowledge equal to or exceeding a
level set forth by regulations.
WHY? – Logbook Entries and Certificate Endorsements are the way that the FAA assigns responsibility and
accountability to the training of airmen
OVERVIEW - This lesson will cover the basic elements pertaining Logbook Entries and Endorsements,
including:
1. Required logbook entries for instruction given
2. Required student pilot certificate endorsements
3. Preparation for a recommendation for practical test
4. Required endorsements of pilot logbook
5. Required flight instructor records
DEVELOPMENT:
HOW?
1.) Required logbook entries for instruction given….
A.) FAR 61.189
1. Requires the instructor to sign the logbook of each person given flight or ground instruction.
B.) Recreational pilots require endorsements for:
1. PIC within 50nm of airport where instruction was received. 61.35 a 1 61.97
2. Flight proficiency 61.98
3. PIC within 50nm 61.101b
4. PIC greater than 50nm 61.101c
5. PIC with less than 400 hours who has not logged PIC in 180 days 61.101f
6. Conduct solo flights to obtain a private certificate. 61.101 h I
C.) SPECIALIZED endorsements:
1. Flight review 61.56 d
2. PIC Complex 61.31 e
3. PIC High Performance 61.31 f
4. High Altitude 61.31 g
5. PIC Tailwheel 61.31 I
6. Practical test 61.39 a 6
7. Retesting after failure 61.49
D.) REQUIRED Student Pilot Certificate and Logbook endorsements…
1. Student certificate:
a) Prior to first solo (make and model of aircraft)
b) Prior to first Cross Country flight (category endorsements)
2. Logbook endorsements
a) Pre-solo aeronautical knowledge (make and model of aircraft)
b) Pre-solo flight training
c) Each 90 day period solo signoff
d) Landings at another airport within 25NM of airport where instruction was given
e) Solo cross country flight training
f) Solo cross country each flight (specific route)
g) Repeated solo cross country of not more than 50NM
h) Solo in specific Class B airspace (name of airspace)
i) Solo at a specific airport located in Class B. (name of airport)
