Cumulative Reflection

I joined Iowa State University in the fall of 2017. I decided to major in computer

engineering because I wanted to learn more about software and computer architecture.

My first computer engineering class was CPRE 185. I really enjoyed this class because

I learned a lot about the C programming language and we did some fun projects in the

lab. Throughout all the classes I have taken at ISU, I have learned many things and

gained valuable experiences. One of the main takeaways that I got from ISU was how

to constantly learn new things. In my field, it is important to stay up to date and know

how to problem solve.

One of my favorite classes I have taken at ISU was COMS 309. I really enjoyed

this class because it was a semester long team project. Before I started this class, I had

only worked on one other project before and I was looking forward to a new project.

Throughout the course of this class, I learned how to problem solve, how to work on a

team and communicate effectively, and how to use new technologies. During this

project, I learned how to write code for a server and how to handle the backend of a

project. I also learned about databases, and after this course, I decided to take an

actual databases class to learn more. I think that this class was very beneficial to my

education because once I go out into the real world and work on a project, many of the
skills I learned from this class will help me succeed.

I think that in order to be a successful engineering student and to be successful

in my career, I will need to be able to utilize outside resources. For example, another

experience that has prepared me for my future is my senior design project. In this

project I have been able to work on a team and interact with the client and my advisors.

So far we have written a formal design document and we have started doing early stage

simulations of what our final product will look like. A couple of the classes that I have

taken at ISU will directly benefit what I will be doing in this project, but I will have to be

able to learn new things and use outside resources.

I am looking forward to graduating next spring and to continue my learning. I will

be working full time for a company after graduation. I know that what I have learned

from ISU has given me a strong foundation, but for me to be successful, I will need to

be able to keep learning and advancing my knowledge.
