Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE

Our study forfend the susceptible families who wasn’t brought about the

idea of medical science. Superstition just won’t be tolerable in these cases. What

you independently believe will only jeopardize the entire family and others. A

child’s innocence should not be judge at all nor his or her own life doing for doing

what’s best is always right sustaining our future as a whole. This research

obligates the facts and protection of the innocent child who’s life is in danger.

Reputations are in play in this strife in between parents and Modern Medical

Science. If any at all possible that doctors are wrong this would prove a fatal and

monumental dereliction to the parents of tomorrow. The risk of safety not being

vaccinated nowadays is too much of a peril to the destitute un-medicated child to

emaciate his or her life away. Living a life as a hazard to children could also bring

ample of oppression towards the un-medicated child’s short lifetime. We earmark

our research to be most cogent towards families. A diminutive number of parents

these days still refuse to vaccinate their children because of the false belief that it

could cause a medical anomaly through-out their child’s growth. False beliefs

such a superstitious medication don’t rely on science approved studies.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), there are no information that can

support their claims.

Statement of the Problem

This study intends to offer information to the guardians about the significance of

vaccination and to realize what number of lives are in threat by defying it. (1)

How does families who lack faith in vaccines change for the better of their

children? (2) How does the rural citizens now or how educated are they in

immunization? (3) What danger is the unvaccinated families to the healthy

community?
Definition of Terms

Anti-Vaxxer- a person who is opposed to vaccination, typically a parent who

does not wish to vaccinate their child.

Immunization- a general procedure where by individual is immune or

imperviouse to illness

Jeopardize- putting infants to danger.

Superstition- false rumors leading to misbelief.

Susceptible- false information that could to harm.

Vaccine- a serum that is injected to a body to fight a certain disease.

World Health Organzation - is a specialized agency of the United Nations that

is concerned with international public health.

Conceptual Framework

Vaccines is widely available for everyone in the community of barangay pajo.

Vaccines are safe there are no doctors that would support that vaccines is not

safe. Vaccination is free and Barangay Pajo provides free vaccination every

week on Wednesday. The theory provides facts to convince the unvaccinated

family to vaccinate their children. The collaboration of the study allows our

research to be persuasive.

Theoritical Background

Conspiracy Theory (Wheeling; 2017) states that vaccination was an effective

method to prevent disease. Also, it is the most important among all of the

precaution drug to protect the population from infections and diseases. In

addition, Patrick Peretti-Watel(2015) created Hesitancy Theory that talks about

the people that are characterised by what we may call reluctant conformism and

vaccine-specific behaviours. They may decline a vaccine, but they may also

delay it or even accept it in due time despite their doubts/reluctance. In other

words, they may endorse a wide range of non-specific behaviours, all of which

can result from something else than VH. Lastly, Vaccine Immunization Theory

(Marian Oplinskie; 2012) states there is no easy solution to the problem,

however, most important is to continue public education and persuasion and

addressing vaccine refusal by respectfully listening to parental concerns and

discussing the risks of nonvaccination.

RRL & RRS

Anti-vaccinationists past and present

1. Robert M Wolfe (r-wolfe@northwestern.edu), assistant professor,

2. Lisa K Sharp, assistant professor

The British Vaccination Act of 1840 was the first incursion of the state, in the

name of public health, into traditional civil liberties. The activities of today's

propagandists against immunisations are directly descended from, indeed little

changed from, those of the anti-vaccinationists of the late nineteenth century,

say Robert Wolfe and Lisa Sharp

Much attention has been given on the internet to the “anti-vaccination” movement

—using vaccination in its wider sense of “any immunisation”—and its possible

harmful effects on uptake rates of immunisations. Many observers believe that

the movement is something new and a consequence of concerns arising from the

large number of immunisations now given, but concern over vaccination began

shortly after the introduction of smallpox vaccination and has continued unabated

ever since. Methods of disseminating information have changed since the 19th

century, but the concerns and activities of anti-vaccination movements in the

United Kingdom and their counterparts in the United States have changed little

since then. The historian Martin Kaufman, writing about anti-vaccination

movements in 19th and early 20th century America, concluded his paper with this

comment, “With the improvements in medical practice and the popular

acceptance of the state and federal governments' role in public health, the anti-
vaccinationists slowly faded from view, and the movement collapsed.”1 We hope

that a brief historical examination of anti-vaccination sentiments will give medical

professionals a better sense of perspective about the groups opposing

immunisations and their arguments.

Parents’ vaccination comprehension and decisions

Julie S.DownsWändi Bruinede BruinBaruchFischhoff1

We report on 30 in-depth mental models interviews with parents discussing

vaccination for their children, both in general terms and in response to

communications drawn from sources supporting and opposing vaccines. We

found that even parents favourable to vaccination can be confused by the

ongoing debate, leading them to question their choices. Many parents lack basic

knowledge of how vaccines work, and do not find the standard information

provided to them to be particularly helpful in explaining it. Those with the greatest

need to know about vaccination seem most vulnerable to confusing information.

Opportunities for education may be missed if paediatricians do not appreciate

parents’ specific information needs.

The Effects of Anti-Vaccine Conspiracy Theories on Vaccination Intentions

 Daniel Jolley ,

 Karen M. Douglas

The current studies investigated the potential impact of anti-vaccine conspiracy

beliefs, and exposure to anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, on vaccination

intentions. In Study 1, British parents completed a questionnaire measuring

beliefs in anti-vaccine conspiracy theories and the likelihood that they would have

a fictitious child vaccinated. Results revealed a significant negative relationship

between anti-vaccine conspiracy beliefs and vaccination intentions. This effect

was mediated by the perceived dangers of vaccines, and feelings of

powerlessness, disillusionment and mistrust in authorities. In Study 2,

participants were exposed to information that either supported or refuted anti-

vaccine conspiracy theories, or a control condition. Results revealed that

participants who had been exposed to material supporting anti-vaccine

conspiracy theories showed less intention to vaccinate than those in the anti-

conspiracy condition or controls. This effect was mediated by the same variables

as in Study 1. These findings point to the potentially detrimental consequences of

anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, and highlight their potential role in shaping

health-related behaviors.

DOH IDENTIFIES VACCINE HESITANCY AS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR

MEASLES OUTBREAK

Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III

The Department of Health (DOH) today points to vaccine hesitancy as one of the

reasons for the recent measles outbreak in some regions of the country.

Validated data from different regions of the country by the Epidemiology Bureau

of DoH revealed that from 1 January to 9 February this year, a total of 4,302

measles cases have been reported, with 70 deaths.

Ages of cases ranged from 1 month up to 75 years old with 1 to 4 years old

(34%) followed by less than 9 months old (27%) as the most affected age-

groups.  Sixty-six percent of them had no history of vaccination against measles.

Of the total deaths, ages ranged from one month to 31 years old. Notably, 79%

of those who died had no history of vaccination.Regions with high reported cases

are NCR (1,296 cases and 18 deaths) CALABARZON (1,086 cases and 25

deaths), Central Luzon (481 cases with 3 deaths), Western Visayas (212 cases

and 4 deaths) and Northern Mindanao (189 cases and 2 deaths).Eastern

Visayas, MIMAROPA, CALABARZON, Central Visayas and Bicol are regions

that have shown increasing trend as to reported cases for this week.

Vaccine hesitancy refers to delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite

availability of vaccination services.

The causes of measles outbreak involved a number of factors or elements. Loss

of public confidence and trust in vaccines in the immunization program brought

about by the Dengvaxia controversy has been documented as one of many

factors that contributed to vaccine hesitancy in the country. This refers to

mothers who became hesitant to have their children vaccinated with vaccines

that were long proven to be effective. On October 2018, the World Health

Organization conducted a study in selected areas in Metro Manila to identify

reasons for not bringing their children for immunization. The top reasons are the

following: fear due to Dengvaxia, and the lack of time among

households. Moreover, results of the vaccine confidence project in 2015 against

2018 by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on the respondents’

views that vaccines are important decreased from 93% to 32%; safe and

effective from 82% down to 21% and vaccine confidence dropped from 93 to

32% respectively.DOH has been conducting vaccination activities against

measles such as Outbreak Immunization Responses (ORI) in several regions.

This was followed by a nationwide Supplemental Immunization Activity (SIA) for

6 to 59 months old which was conducted in 2 phases - in April 2018 (NCR and

Mindanao) and in September 2018 (other parts of Luzon and Visayas).  Despite

the efforts of health workers, the SIA campaign had achieved a coverage of 69%

during Phase 1 of implementation and 29% in Phase 2.“I appeal to the public to

rebuild your trust and confidence in vaccines that were long proven to be

effective, and I am quite sure that all of us sometime in our lives have been

recipients of these vaccines which had protected us from various diseases,”

Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III concluded.

LITERATURES AND STUDY

Vaccine Skepticism Study

Large pharmaceutical companies, which profit from selling vaccines, are often

targets for conspiracy theorists, said Hornsey. “For many conspiracy theorists,

profits gained are a sign that the system is broken and the truth is being covered

up by vested interests.”“Trying to reduce people’s conspiracy beliefs is

notoriously difficult,” Hornsey said. “An alternative possibility is to acknowledge

the possibility of conspiracies, but to highlight how there are vested interests on

the other side too; vested interests that are motivated to obscure the benefits of

vaccination and to exaggerate their dangers.”Anti-vaccination attitudes were also

associated with intolerance of those who limit their freedom, disgust toward blood

and needles and an individualistic worldview, according to the study.Reference:

Investigation,” by Matthew Hornsey, PhD, Emily Harris, PhD, and Kelly Fielding,

Danger Poll study on the growing population of anti-vaxxers

B.C. poll suggests 'concerning' levels of belief in anti-vaccine conspiracy

theories

Most surveyed were concerned about measles outbreak, but 23% have doubts

about vaccines

Bethany Lindsay · CBC News · Posted: Mar 27, 2019 12:32 PM PT | Last

More than three-quarters of British Columbians polled by Insights West said

they're concerned about the recent measles outbreak. Despite piles of evidence

debunking any link between vaccines and autism, eight per cent of British
Columbians who responded to a new poll still believe there's a

connection.Another 20 per cent agreed with the conspiracy theory that says

vaccinations are encouraged so pharmaceutical companies can make money,

and 14 per cent said they believe the misleading claim that there hasn't been

enough research to prove vaccines are safe, according to the survey from

Insights West."There's a significant level of doubt [about vaccines] and belief in

conspiracy theories that fly in the face of scientific evidence about vaccinations,"

Insights West president Steve Mossop said in a news release."The recent

measles outbreak is evidence of this concerning societal trend and the need for

more education around this significant issue

Research Design and Methods

This Research design and Method provide the details of the factors or

variables used for the study.

The Research was designed as a case study of the Aver of Unvaccinated

Families. This study states the Experimental designs which aims to determine

causes and the Reviewing of other Research which aims to explain. In addition,

this study states that it is only applied to the 10 families of the anti-vaxxers and

this study responds to the unvaccinated families.

Locale of Study

This study was conducted at Asian Learning Center, Pajo Branch, Lapu- Lapu

City, in the municipality of Cebu.

Respondents

In this study we limit to ten (10) families in Barangay Pajo,LLC surveyed by the

students independently in their homes with unsparring reverence to their opinions

on the subject matter of measles vaccination .

Documentation

A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular

disease. A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing

microorganism, and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe,

its toxins or one of its surface proteins. The agent stimulates the body's immune

system to recognize the agent as foreign, destroy it, and "remember" it, so that

the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these

microorganisms that it later encounters.
