Health and Safety Booklet

Graphic Design

Book Cover
To get an idea of what style I wanted my book cover to be I hand drew some initial

renders.

Design One (Left)

My first initial idea was to use the style of a caution sign, the
text would be red with a white outline, and the bottom would
be yellow.
I believe these would be great colours and would really
represent those of health and safety. Additionally, this would
be a great layout as it leaves lots of room for the title and my
name. Although, this could be seen as a con as there could
be too much negative space on the page.

Design Two (Right)

For the second design I roughly drew a flame, this would be in the style of a warning sign, red,
with a white background, the text would be in a bold font wrapped around the image.
I like this idea as it has a sense of uniqueness to it, however, I believe having a large image on
the middle of the cover leaves little room for the title, which in my opinion, should be the most
important thing. Additionally, the image is red I believe the text wouldn’t stand out as much.
Finally, the flame doesn’t have as much relevance to health and safety and is more niche to fire
safety.

Design Three (Left)

This is personally my favourite idea that I designed, it
would be a yellow chemical locker, with a black handle on
the left. This would be particularly relevant to this brief as
dark room chemicals is a big part of photography health
and safety.
Th title would be bold and in a black font, and my name
would be smaller and in an italic font at the bottom.
When working on this design I believe the door needs to be
the opposite way, so it opens with the book.

Design Four (Right)

In this idea I used a different layout and put the title
down the side, however I don’t think it works as well
with a long title. It becomes harder to read and looks slightly too busy and messy.

Design Five (Left)

Here I tried to experiment with, what would be, different font

types, a bigger bolder title that takes up a whole page would be
very eye catching, although arguably a little bit boring.

Design Six (Right)

In this design I wanted to explore the yellow and black warning
design, the stripes signify the health and safety. However, I don’t
think the title works at an angle.

Design Seven
I decided to add a slogan and eye on this one to add more
interest to the cover, however looking back on this design, I don’t think it works as well with the
subject of the book.

Design Eight
For a final render I chose to do a classic
warning sign, however, I think this design
would be too basic and leaves little room for
good page composition.
