Algebra 2 Honors – Transformations on Greatest Integer Functions Day 2

Do Now: If (3, –5) is a point on the graph of 𝑓(𝑥), name a point on the graph of each function below.

a) 𝑦 = −𝑓(𝑥) ______________________ b) 𝑦 = 2𝑓(𝑥 + 1) _________________________

c) 𝑦 = 𝑓( 𝑥 − 3) ______________________ d) 𝑦 = 𝑓(−𝑥) + 7 ________________________

I. Transformation on the Greatest Integer Function

The Greatest Integer Function: 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒂⟦𝒃(𝒙 − 𝒉)⟧ + 𝒌

Recall the parent graph:

x y
-4 ≤ x < -3 -4
-3 ≤ x < -2 -3
-2 ≤ x < -1 -2
-1 ≤ x < 0 -1
0≤x<1 0
1≤x<2 1
2≤x<3 2
3≤x<4 3
5 4

Graph the following functions using transformations.

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 +2 over the domain [0, 10]

Transformations:

x y
0≤x<1 0
1≤x<2 1
2≤x<3 2
3≤x<4 3

2. 𝑓(𝑥) = ⟦2𝑥 + 1⟧ − 3 over the domain [− , )

Transformations:

x y
0≤x<1 0
1≤x<2 1
2≤x<3 2
3≤x<4 3
3. 𝑓(𝑥) = −⟦𝑥 − 3⟧ − 4 over the domain [3, 8]

Transformations:

x y
0≤x<1 0
1≤x<2 1
2≤x<3 2
3≤x<4 3

II. Writing New Functions Given Transformations on a Function

1. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = ⟦−𝑥 + 4⟧ − 7. If the graph of 𝑓 is transformed by reflecting it over the y-axis and translating it up
one unit, write the equation of 𝑓 after it is transformed.

2. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = − (𝑥 + 2) , write the equation of 𝑦 = 3𝑓(𝑥 − 4) + 6.

3. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 2( 𝑥 + 4) − 1, write the equation of 𝑦 = −𝑓(−𝑥) − 2
