What is the problem and how
does it happen?
The Problem
- The slow internet connection that
is commonly being experienced in
rural areas in Negros Oriental,
most of the individuals who have
experienced this are people who
don't have any WiFi in their
houses. As we all know, most of
the students today are dealing
with online classes, slow internet
connection, online meeting,
online submission, online exam,
and online research;
unfortunately, a lot of students
who lived in the rural area have
the unfortunate internet
connection towards online
meetings and online exams.
How does it happen?
This commonly happens when an
individual is not living near the
community signal tower at the same time
an individual who cannot afford to install
WiFi in their houses.

Imagine: How you could do it
better?
We can do it better by installing
an internet hub which caters the
rural residents that have been
experiencing slow internet
connection in their areas, primary
this internet hub is going to be the
house of individuals to get access
with a good internet connection
with the safety that is going to be
provided in the said hub, at the
same time, we are not the only
one who's working with this, the
said project is primarily being
connected by the barangay
officials and the residents;
subsequently, the hub can be the
house of solution and comfort for
the problem of online users or
online professionals in the rural
areas

What are possible challenges &
obstacles that I will encounter?
The possible obstacles to the said
idea are primarily:
- The weather which literally when
monsoon season comes storms is
primarily in its edge of rumbling
in the six months in the
Philippines.
- The installation of the said hub
may also be an obstacle at the
very beginning since the location
is a rural area (which specifically
targets the mountain area part or
countryside), the location may
put someone at risk
- The operation of the internet
connection may get slower as the
number of individuals increases.

Challenge: THE ONLINE UNCOMFORTABLITY IN THE RURAL AREA

1. It is a bittersweet experience for me. Bitter in a way that when you feel like you want to gain more understanding about a certain topic
but the connection isn't that good enough to access sites that are very useful so it will make me stop to do such thing so it will tear off my
patience. Second, the place isn't that comfortable, for me learning will always be very effective when students are comfortable but because
of slow connection or basically lack of connection in the parameters of the house so I need to go to the area where the connection will be
in its finest but that area accepting that we are living in rural expected it to be not comfortable, mosquitos are everywhere, there are fruits
falling, animals come and go, heat from the sun, smell of feces of the animals and the most challenging is when it rains you need to carry
an umbrella while using a phone as well as your notebook for the class, it is really hard. But at the same time, it is sweet because of the
learning I acquired through the experience I had.

2. I feel challenged because the fact that I badly wanted to graduate on time, makes me feel that this will be something that I can share
throughout my journey. Also, challenge because of the risks that it brought, I don't know when those falling objects will hit me though I
always see to it that I'm safe but we cannot stop things from happening.

3. First, I am scared of taking the online classes because of the fact that we are living in a rural area where signal or connection is not that
constant. Second, because of the eagerness to finish college on time, I took the risks and enrolled online class even if I will be facing a lot
of hardships: specifically the location, the comfortability, and the access. Third, when online classes started, I went to places to locate the
exact place that gives the best connection. Fourth, the place I found was really not comfortable in a way that I have to sit in the roots of the
coconut tree, smelling the feces of cows and pigs and the falling mango fruits over the area. Mosquitos are everywhere. They will bite you
even if you wear a jacket or pants they will always find a way to bite you not just one but a lot of them. One day when we had our online
exam I think it was a final exam, I settled my things around the area that I can easily get it but as time passed by, a SNAKE shows up and
it was going to the direction of mine and because I was scared I throw my things up in the air and run very fast for the snake not to catch
up with me. It was a bad incident! When night comes there are a lot of insects coming to you because of the light that the gadgets produce
and there are strange sounds that can bother your concentration and eventually more mosquitos will come to you. The fact that I am the
only one in the place makes me feel the chill of the place thinking that if there are snakes around, or the scary a monsters (I can't stop
thinking about these creatures) because of the darkness that the place offers. (like it is really uncomfortable). Fifth, when it rains because I
can't sit where I suppose to sit, I can't open my notebook because it will get wet, I can't use my gadget thoroughly because at the same time
I'm holding the umbrella and the saddest part is when it rains the signal will be slow and eventually will be lost.

4. What I like the most is the idea that I am surviving day by day even if it is really hard I choose to be a very positive person and get a
great lesson from it. Thinking that I am here today because I am living my dream and nothing can stop that.
The pain is not that I can't really acquire good points in the session that we had in class because of the unstable connection I barely
answered questions that our instructor gave.

5. The most surprising throughout the experience is the idea that I can survive online class even in this trying time and hardships that I
encountered. I feel like nothing can bet me, in a way that I did things that are not naturally be learned in school but through experience.
Things that only I can unlock to myself without someone's help. And that's what I'm holding inside, that I shouldn't be hit with the
negative vibes that the circumstances give me but in turn, I will fight to make my future better. The #LabanLang is and will always be my
motivator.

6. I will suggest that things will be okay if the municipality or the barangay initiates something like a place where we students, teachers, or
anyone that need the access of the internet can feel important of being safe and feel comfortable while connecting to the internet. With
safety measures accepting that it is pandemic. Not a typical internet cafe but a good place to study and acquire a great learning experience.

 Worksheet # 3: UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY
PAIN POINTS
In summary of the information given by our
interviewee here are the pain points that he
noted:
1. Just like other students, our
interviewee is eager to study and gain more
understanding about the topics being
discussed in class. Unfortunately, he is
somewhere located in the rural area here in
Negros where internet connection isn't that
good enough for him to access sites that
contributes to his learning. For this reason, he
honestly told us that this really ruins his
patience and sometimes ending up not doing
something at all.
2. The area where internet connection is
seemed to be much faster is not that
comfortable for him considering the presence
of various insects flying everywhere, there
were also fruits from trees falling towards
him, animals and their feces that surrounds
him, the heat of the sun, and the most
challenging as he noted is when it rains.
During rainy days, he needs to carry his
umbrella along with his phone, notebook and
other stuff in attending his class. “It’s really
hard” he added.
3. Our interviewee also had something to
admit with us. He honestly admits that, he is
really scared of taking this FUEL Program
because of his situation knowing also that
deadlines of assignments and activities
should be met on time.

GAIN POINTS
Despite of all these pain points that he
noted, here are also the gain points that
he mentioned:
1. Our interviewee didn’t mind all
those obstacles in his learning journey.
In fact, he pointed out that he wanted to
even share this experience of him to his
fellow students. He wants to serve as an
inspiration for others to focus on their
studies and not to give up on things
easily.
2. Though he is dealing with these
difficult challenges, he noted that he was
surprised that he managed to survive and
meet deadlines on time. He noticed that
he has become a better version of
himself each passing day, a stronger
one.

INSIGHT
Listening to the awe-inspiring
experience of this student we then
realized how hard it is for some students
to have this FUEL program. Being part
of the positive change in the society, our
group are then motivated to have this
social business in order to address the
issue of poor internet connection in rural
areas, because after all, this is what we
do in social business: solving problems
and not just merely focusing on profits.
Aside from that, being also a student
each of us then realized something out
of the experience of our interviewee. We
cannot really know our limits if we don’t
encounter various challenges and
problems. We have to transform each of
these problems in to something that
could contribute to one’s improvement.
Truly, challenges and problems are not
hindrance to our education but rather it
is an opportunity for us to learn more
and find deeper meaning of ourselves.
We would like to drop this words from
our interviewee “I am here today
because I am living my dream and
nothing can stop that, Laban lang!”.

The users are subsequently individuals
who are living or not living in the rural
area of the specific place the business
idea is being located, but primarily
most of the users are coming from the
rural area since the proposed idea is
going to be in the rural area.
Since the idea is solving the slow
internet connection, the discomfort of
the place from animals, insects,
adapting signal to its gadget, and the
weather; subsequently the problem of
an individual is in line with those
problems being stated.
The most common need of an
individual in the said business idea is
one (1) a stable internet connection,
and two(2) a safe comfortable place to
stay while surfing with their specific
gadget(s) in a certain day they want in
which relatively urban area has slower
internet connection when it comes to
surfing or adapting signal in a certain
place.

HOW MIGHT WE… (Creating opportunities)

In what ways might we able to help our user? What opportunities to help do you see?

By providing them the better surfing station house, where they will be connected to a stable connection without worrying on
which part of the house has higher and fast signal, as well as the certain animals or insects that might give your comfortable place
into chaotic, harmful, and dangerous for you and your health if worse cases may happen, along with that, the weather is also one
of the problems for the users since not all individual can predict the weather of the day, we might give them a certain assurance
to let them be safe.
The opportunities that we see to help is the opportunity to let every be connected towards the virtual world that can lead them to
be more flexible in the world of technology and the changing phase of digital workplace soon, along with that, the business idea
also creates the work opportunity to those certain individuals who are in the rural area.

Our user has always been struggling to take
online classes due to slow internet connection and
the place as well where he gets a fast internet
connection is not that comfortable. With our
solution, our user will now be able to have access
to a fast internet connection in the comfort of our
source house. He'll not have to worry about
problems that he had experienced before like
insect bites, falling fruits, being surrounded with
animal feces, and the struggles that he'll have to
face during rainy days. Meeting the deadlines of
his activities and assignments wouldn't be
difficult for him to catch up making him perform
excellently in his online classes

different will yours be?
Yes. We've noticed that there already existing
projects similar to what we are planning to
implement which is the "Pesowifi". The said
project is also been providing a fast internet
connection to students struggling with the
situation. Though we have one goal to provide a
fast internet connection to students, we differ with
the main concept itself. With our solution, we are
not only addressing the problem with the internet
connection but we are also concern with the place.

Why are you here? How are you relevant to the
user / beneficiary?
The pain point is enduring the slow internet
connection and uncomfortable surroundings in the
rural areas to fulfill the eagerness of the users to
learn and gain an understanding of the topics
discussed during an online class.
What do you want them to remember?
We want them to remember that in any social
issue, there are people both local government and
private individuals who are willing to help. And
that this project benefits users in rural areas one at
a time, not just for the users to learn during online
class but also to allow other users to connect to the
virtual world to improve and be flexible to
technological changes
What do you want them to think, feel and do?
As a concern social entrepreneur, we want them to
think that online classes are not the worst
nightmare that they could have as we want them
to think positively with their education since they
will no longer have to worry about the internet
connection. We want them to feel comfortable
while doing their tasks and feel welcomed in our
source house. And lastly, we want them to do their
part. Now that they a connection and they have a
good place, the only thing that we want them to do
is to study and put hard work and eagerness on
every task or assignment that they have.

We have this "source house" wherein students can
stay and make their activities and assignments
comfortably. Moreover, to provide the best
service that we could give to our users, we also
consider the food. By doing this, we are not only
meeting their needs but essentially we are
generating more profit.

November 19-25, 2020: Making of survey
questionnaires, releasing it to the barangay
officials, searching for internet provider.
December 1- 14,2020: Communicating to local
government and other establishment for
funding the project.
January 2021: Start of legal process of permit

table and other materials needed for the hub.

How will you make them user your
solution?
For us, this is not a problem at all since we expect
that our users dreamed of this kind of solution. We
know how hard it is to have a slow internet
connection and to be in such an uncomfortable
place and if we are in the shoes of the users we
would love to have this kind of solution. However,
we will also expect the unexpected, if in the case
that our user would be hesitant to use our solution
even knowing all those benefits that he could get
to our solution. We would like to hear and listen
from him as to what are the factors as to why he or
she doesn't want to take our solution and then,
provide possible ways to improve and innovate
more to attract our users.
