The economy of India is the 11th largest by nominal GDP and 4th
largest by purchasing power parity. It is estimated that the overall
Indian logistics spend is at Rs 3.5 trillion, and is equivalent to around
12-13 % of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is significantly
higher than those of developed nations where it averages 6-9 %.
Higher the logistics spend as percentage of GDP affirms the poor /
lower quality of infrastructure, multiple tax regimes and reflects on
the highly unorganized nature of this industry in our country, 90 -
92% is unorganized. We need to consolidate, collaborate.
With the recently concluded visit of the President of United States, Mr. Barack Obama's Indo - US
joint statement highlights - reflected on - US to realign India in its dual-use export control
regulations, also in the Food Processing Industry for an improved food value chain - Focus will be
on cold chain logistics and sharing of market knowledge by introducing India to USA best
practices, standards and technologies in the cold chain infrastructure.

As Indian companies vie with each other to establish their credentials through supply chain

customer value. As they compete, Indian companies are also increasingly collaborating and
learning from each other. Forums like the India Warehousing Show are great enablers in this

Concurrent Conferences on Express Cargo & Supply Chain industry!
India ECL Conference 2011 is the continuation and second edition of Courier conference, first being held in April 2010 at New Delhi. Theme of the last conference was ‘ Developing Effective Strategies to Mitigate Operational Risks
and Build Profitability in Courier Logistics Operations’. The Conference was well attended by over 152 courier and cargo companies from across the country. The event was inaugurated by Ms. Kameshwari Subramanian , Jt. Sec
(Customs), Department of Revenues, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India. There was a balanced mix of International and Indian speakers discussing the common challenges faced by the industry. All leading industry association
supported the event including EICI, CAI, Delhi Courier Club, Bombay Courier Association and Delhi Courier Association. There was a large participation from India Post, Airport Authority of India, Several country embassies and

The next edition would focus on a different aspect with the same objective. Theme of the next conference would be ‘ Applying Effective Marketing Strategies to Build Sustainable and Scalable Courier & Cargo Business’. The ses-
sions would revolve around the effective and more localized marketing strategies to grow the business today. In the era of tough competition, we need to ensure that our product or service is packaged in the most attractive manner

What is Logistics?
I start my message by asking this because while its fashionable to define it in various interesting and technical manner and is also a
favorite topic for discussions at various forums, at the heart of it, it is something very simple and can simply be defined as the act of ‘Move-
Store-Move-Store-Move-Inform’ ! The store part here in this entire chain is responsible not only for safe storage but also for an effective
movement or delivery and thus becomes a very critical element in the entire chain. This is where warehousing comes in.

Warehousing has come a long way in the country and its progress or changing profile is almost synonymous with the growth or progress
of the Logistics industry itself. From a grossly defined godown space to a store and finally now as a distribution center the concept of
warehousing has really evolved. A warehouse as the word itself says is a place to store the wares for the organization but the fact is that
no one buys/produces/moves goods for purely storage purposes, goods are transacted for distribution /sale purposes and that’s where the
new avatar of warehousing is now focused at .

The warehousing business is thus at the heart of the entire supply chain and just like in human body unless the heart is robust pumping
well and devoid of any frictional losses or blocks the whole system can become less effective and productive . Warehousing therefore is fast
emerging as a specialized activity right from designing of facilities at the construction stage, to getting the flow right at the implementation
stage and its great to see such initiatives which focus on this so critical aspect of logistics. I am sure this event will give us the opportunity
to look at the challenges of infrastructure, land and indirect taxes reforms as well as on the opportunities of GST implementation and

What is the current size of Supply Chain industry in India?
The overall outsourcing in logistics is INR 4165 bn (which is 52% of total spending on logistics) out of which the opportunity for organized
sector is less than 10%.

2 What is the growth rate at present and how much do you think we may reach in 5 years from now?
The Indian logistics industry is expected to grow at 15-18% annually up to 2015

3 Which all industry sectors are seeing the maximum growth in their supply chain management?
In recent years Telecom, FMCG ,Retail have shown huge growth in Logistics spending and outsourcing ,in coming years Project logistics is
going to be another high spending and thus fast growing area.

4 What is the geographical pattern of the growth and expected nucleus centers to emerge in the supply chain industry?
The interesting part of the industry growth pattern is that is almost identical growth all over the country with all four regions nearly showing
the same potential for growth , the GST implementation will almost definitely lead to consolidation where the nucleus centers showing greater
logistics infrastructure and environment will emerge.

5 What is your opinion on India Warehousing Show as an exclusive platform for the entire supply chain industry to come
together and discuss the common challenges and opportunities in the sector today?
I think it’s a great idea and will be a huge opportunity for the industry to get together and share their thoughts on the challenges as well as
opportunities staring at us. The Logistics industry needs such platforms and can only gain by active participation in same
