What is Print Media?

I. Definition of Print Media


a. “Paper publications like newspapers, books, magazines, newsletters, and journals…
considered the oldest form of media (Aboga & Ibañez, 2017).”
b. “Also known as the press… materials that are written and physically distributed
(Liquigan, 2016).”
c. Print media is considered as one of the oldest forms of advertisement (Lad, 2018).
II. Examples of Print Media
a. Newspapers
 Tuazon (2015) stated that newspapers “played [a] critical role in the nation’s
quest for freedom and independence” (Aboga & Ibañez, 2017).
 It plays a big role in giving out information to the public (Aboga & Ibañez, 2017).
 Tuazon (2015) stated that La Solidaridad, Kalayaan, La Independencia, La
Libertad are called to be the “official organ[s] of the revolutionaries” (Aboga &
Ibañez, 2017).
b. Books
 The “oldest form of media” that gives opportunity to different writers to spread
information. Not only that, they can also bring entertainment to readers (Lad,
2018).
c. Magazines
 Gives provision about different topics that usually gives entertainment: “food,
fashion, sports, finance, lifestyle, and so on (Lad, 2018).”
d. Others
 Newsletter, Banners, Billboards, Brochures, Flyers, Scholarly Journals, and more.
III. History of Print Media
a. Paper was invented in China in 100 BCE (Taylor, 2018).
b. Acta Diurna (which is translated from Latin as “Daily Acts”), an ancient prototype of a
newspaper started in Ancient Rome in about 131 BCE – 130 BCE. This prototype is
shown to have the texts carved in stone and metal, and then placed in public places for
the spread information (Mingren, 2017).
c. The first known printed text made through block printing in the First Millennium BCE
was found (“Printing Press,” 2018).
d. By the year 1440, Johannes Gutenberg, a German, starts to experiment about printing in
France (“Printing Press,” 2018).
e. The earliest known magazine was the German “Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen
[Edifying Monthly Discussions]” in the year 1663 (“The History of Magazines,” n.d.).
f. The first newspaper was printed in England in 1665. Meanwhile, the first successful
newspaper circulated in Britain in 1705 (Lambert, n.d.).
IV. The Relevance of Print Media in the Modern World
a. More people prefer physical copies than digitalized versions (“Is Print Media still
important?,” 2017).
b. Less distractive [e.g. advertisements] (“Is Print Media still important?,” 2017).
c. People retain the information more through tangible copies of their reading material
(Myberg & Wilberg, 2015).
