Culture Lesson Reflection

For this assignment, I worked in a group of 3 to put together a culture lesson reflecting

some of the key ideas about the Russian culture. Being this task was completed in a virtual

environment, planning this lesson was challenging because we were unsure of how to make sure

students were engaging in the lesson. To resolve this, we created a worksheet to go along with

our lesson to be sure that students were able to grasp the key ideas of the Russian culture. I found

that it was also difficult to ensure that all students were able to conceptually understand the

lesson. Virtual learning limits students in the sense that if they have questions or are confused

about anything, it is difficult for them to ask for help. However, there are also some advantages

to virtually teaching this lesson. Students have the flexibility to complete this task at their leisure,

which allows for a less stressful environment. I also think that because this lesson was uploaded

to our class website, students were able to download and keep the information provided in this

lesson, where if it were in person, we would have just presented the information once in front of

them. If this lesson were taught in the classroom, everything would have been the same except

for the way the information was presented. My group and I would have verbally gone over the

presentation in front of the class, and we also would have had the opportunity to discuss as a

class what we were teaching. The only aspect that would have been completely different if this

lesson were taught in person is that we would have played a game with the class to further the

student’s understanding. If I had to plan this lesson again for a virtual environment, the only
thing I would change is I would offer students a way to communicate better with the teachers in

case of confusion or any questions. Overall, I think my group and I did a good job of adhering to

our objectives. These objectives were assessed throughout the lesson with a word document that

students were asked to complete. Based on the student’s answers, everyone was able to meet the

goals of the lesson. This shows that our assessment was effective, and our objectives were

adhered to. If I had to do this lesson again and assess the students virtually, the only thing I

would do differently is have the students fill out a multiple choice Google form with key

questions from the presentation to further assess their conceptual understanding. In all, I think

this was a great way to educate students on the culture of Russia and I believe this was an

affective and well-executed lesson plan.
