When to start Levonorgestrel Intrauterine system (Mirena)

Can be inserted anytime within the 1st 5 days of menstrual cycle
without need for additional contraceptive cover.
Can be started at any other time provided the woman is not pregnant.
Use condoms or abstinence for 7 days.
Postpartum – insert from 4 weeks postpartum
Post abortion / miscarriage – insert within 48 hrs or delay until 4 weeks
post abortion.
