HOW TO ASSESS STUDENTS IN THE NEW NORMAL

Assessment –an ongoing process of identifying, gathering, organizing, and interpreting quantitative and
qualitative information about what the learners know and can do. (DepEd Order No. 8, s.2015,p.1)

 It is vital to utilize strategies for the Assessment of Learning that may best work for teachers,
learners, and parents as well.
 The learning outcomes in the form of knowledge, skill, attitudes, and values will be assessed.
Learners shall prepare their portfolio/e-portfolio to include written works, and performances
(and products), whether hardcopy, softcopy, or a combination of both. The portfolio/e-portfolio
content will assessed using rubrics that capture the evidence of learning. Testimonies of parents
and other adults including community leaders aside from teachers may also be considered in the
assessment.

TYPES OF CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT

1. Diagnostic Assessment – a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students’

individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is primarily used to
diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning.

Occurrence: before a course, grade level, unit, and/or lesson

What to do?

 Pre-tests (on content and abilities)

 Self-assessments (identifying skills and competencies)
 Discussion responses (on content-specific prompts)
 Observation and Anecdotal Notes
 Use of Kahoot
 Use of Mentimeter
 Use of Checklist via google docs and other online platforms
 Short online interview
 Jeopardy Games

2. Formative Assessment – Assessment for learning is ongoing assessment that allows teachers to
monitor students on a day-to-day basis and modify their teaching based on what the students need to
be successful. This assessment provides students with the timely, specific feedback that they need to
make adjustments to their learning.

Occurrence: Frequent intervals after small units of instruction; throughout instruction

What to do?

 Online quizzes
 Use of Interactive Games
 Students self-assessments
 Written responses which will be submitted online
 Questioning
 Conferencing
 Observations
 Rubrics

2. Summative Assessment – Formal assessment used to measures what students have learned at the
end of a defined period of instruction.

Quarterly Assessment may be provided into written works like open-book exam which learners must
complete independently at home using resources they have access to, and be returned within a specific
time.

Occurrence: After instruction is completed. At end of a course or at the end of a large amount of
instruction, infrequently

What to do?

 Ends of unit tests

 Final exams
 Culminating projects
 Portfolios
 Short answer questions via google docs

On point….

 Learners must be involved in making decision about the summative assessment tasks to pursue
and the deadlines for completion. They must also be allowed to demonstrate their learning in
various ways, using any resources available to them.
 Performance tasks must be designed to provide multistep opportunities for learners to apply
what they are learning at home.
 Assessment and feedback may be given via text message, email or digital learning management
systems (google classroom, MS teams, and other LMS’s)

Tools for online assessment

 Socrative
 Exam time quizzes
 That quis
 LMS course
 Poll everywhere
 Edmodo
 Event survey 360
 Gnowledge
 Embed
 Kahoot
 Hot potatoes
 Open-ended/essay questions
