Instructions: Examine the document below and answer the questions that follow.

1. What language register is used in this document? Cite examples from the text to
support your answer. (10 points)

The kind of register used in this document is a medical register or language. The
author is using this type of language to comprehensively explain the processes
involved in determining neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Generally,
medical terms are used to “describe components and processes of the human body,
medical procedures, diseases, disorders, and pharmacology” (What Is Medical
Terminology, 2019).

The author first introduced the subject of the document or discussion which is
the neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), followed by the terms pulmonary
immaturity, high mortality (death), and pulmonary surfactant. In layman’s term, RDS
is a disorder describing the undeveloped lungs of premature babies that typically
cause breathing problems (Herndon, 2012). He then used the term gestational age to
determine the risk of a baby developing RDS. To fully understand the meaning of
gestational age, Hersh (2018) explained that this a way to “measure how far along a
pregnancy is.” He then used the term amniotic fluid analysis for his methodology,
which describes the tests performed to evaluate the health of a fetus (Amniotic Fluid
Analysis, 2020). Lastly, to further describes the methods used in this document, the
author utilized the terms lecithin-sphingomyelin ratio, phosphatidylglycerol
measurement, surfactant-albumin ratio, and lamellar body count.

2. How would you describe the style used by the author of this document? (10
points)

The style used by the author in this content is considered as a formal way of
writing. Eaton (2018) discussed the formats commonly used in this type of writing
wherein a formal paper should consider the following; complete sentences; avoiding
slang; may use technical or academic vocabulary. Becker (2015) also added that one
should do away with contractions and abbreviations when writing, and this style of
language is one-way in nature. Furthermore, Eaton (2012) also highlighted that
scientific reports or publishing are the main examples in this style of writing. Thus, by
evaluating the text, all of the formats commonly used in a formal style of writing are
utilized by the author. The discussion, methods, and terminologies used to
comprehensively discuss the neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) provided
evidence that this document is written formally.

3. What is the importance of learning about the other varieties of English? (10
points)

Pronunciations, grammar, and the vocabulary of the English language continue

to evolve and vary from one region to another. Hence, the continual progress of the
universal language created a myriad of varieties from the individual, regional,
national, and global levels. These varieties emphasized the differences between
British and American English, thick Ugandan English, and French-themed Canadian
English, and the varied Asian English (Nair, 2018).

Firstly, learning and understanding that not everybody speaks the same English
accent, pronunciation, and vocabulary and accepting the diversity of the universal
language encourage every school to promote equality among native and non-native
speakers (Garside, 2019). This allows non-native English learners to reflect and assess
their communication skills yielding them to become globally competitive citizens.

Additionally, learning about the other varieties of English language allows

everyone to be flexible in dealing with a wide range and diverse English- and
communication-related situations. There may be instances when miscommunication
and misunderstanding may occur due to the differences in our language. However,
learning and recognizing these differences would help everybody to avoid prejudices
and biases in the language (Shams, 2018).

Lastly, the study of these varieties can foster our awareness of the diversity of
language and linguistics. In this way, respect and understanding will nurture as we
continue to unravel the various styles and registers we encounter every day. And as
for future educators, we have to instill in the minds, hearts, and lives of our learners
these values for them to become the beacons of hope of this nation.
