I am contemplating a Pc3x as a replacement for my k2600xs. The 2600 has spent more time in repair
this last 12 months than being played. What things would I be giving up when moving to the Pc3x? I am
in love w/the sounds (especially piano) and action of the 2600 and hope to only upgrade. Thoughts?

Gains: Just about every sound, even those named similarly, just plain sounds better in the PC3. The
processing is much more powerful, and you can have up to 32 layers, with any layer feeding any other
layer. Also more effects, although they are handled somewhat differently than the KDFX model in the
2600. The PC3 has over 900 sounds as it leaves the factory, plus a separate General MIDI set of
sounds. There is a lot more room to store personally created programs and sequences. The KB3 module
has excellent Hammond tone, although the Leslie emulation is not quite up to the best of the dedicated
clonewheels. However, the KB3 sounds can be routed separately and fed into a Leslie or Ventlator.

I'd sell my 2661 if I got a good enough offer. I would not sell my PC3X (at least not until a superior model
is brought out in the future). BTW, I've had my PC3X since March of 2008, liked it well enough that I
bought a PC3 for gigging eleven months later.

That about covers it. The PC3 series has been a big step forward, sonically. I previously owned a
K2500RS, and a K2500XS. Got a lot of gigging and studio mileage from both. I've had a PC3X since
April '08, and - like James - have acquired a PC3 as well for gigging. If you don't need the on-board
sampling, then PC3 is the direction to go. And if you happen to want K-series sample/sound compatibility,
the PC3K is just around the corner.

I own both a K2661 and PC3X (and PC3). You would be giving up compatibility for any K series sounds
you may have created or purchased. The PC3K that will be out this spring will have about 80 to 90%
compatibility for the K series sounds. Since you have an XS, you would be giving up the capability of
sampling in your Kurzweil. You would also be giving up a considerable amount of bulk, size, and weight.
The PC3X is substantially smaller and lower in weight. Oh - if you are into "world" or "ethnic" sounds like
in the "Contemporary" ROM in the 2600 - there are not nearly as many in the PC3.
