I. Top Story of the Month

Learning how to share

Sharing. The word alone means a great savings to people using the internet, a printer, or
another resource they don’t have to buy multiple of. But how does it work? Is it reliable?
Is it secure? Well in the next few months we will explorer the joys and concerns of
networking and why you should have it.
Now the first thing you will need it something to actually share. The people that
would get the most out of networking have more then 1 computer, broadband access to
the internet (either cable modem or DSL), printing needs by all users, and files that are
shared across the different PCs. Let’s take a look at a cost comparison for someone using
networking and someone who does not. Let’s say they are paying $49 a month for
broadband

Person A (Network) Person B

Internet Access – 3 PCs $49 $150
Printer $149 $447
Labor associated with setup $160 $0
CDs to burn data on to share $0 $30
Totals $309 $627

You see the difference? And the more Pcs you add the more person B has to pay! But
you ask how much does it cost to set up a network? Well I am glad you asked that. The
main components you will need to set up a wired network are

• 4 port wired Router - $50 (www.linksys.com)

• # of Network adapters to correspond with # of Pcs networked ($15 each)
• CAT 5 Cables ($15 each)

That’s it! The computer that’s already connected to broadband already has a network card
and a cable so all you will need is an additional cable for the each new computer and a
network card for each along with the router and you are ready. Be prepared to do a lot of
work cabling if you have computers on multiple floors. This network is more secure but
a pain to set up.

Now for you who choose an easier way, there is. With wireless networking you don’t
need cables and you can put the network anywhere in your home or office. The router
cost about $100 depending on which speed you want.

• Wireless 4 port Router 802.11B - $80 (www.linksys.com)

• Wireless USB 802.11B network adapters (1 per desktop or laptop) - $50

The regular speed is 11 Mbps which is fine for a home or small office of 5 or less
computers. If you have more then 5 and you transfer a lot of files back and forth, may I
suggest the 54 Mbps option? More expensive but faster throughput is worth it. After that
you need a wireless card for each computer you want to connect whether it’s a laptop or
desktop. Make sure you get the card that corresponds with what you have. If you have a
laptop on your network this will be a no brainer. Now go online to continue learning
about how a network functions…this time from the wireless realm
II. Spiritual Word of the Month

When he was not yet 4 years

old, Itzhak Perlman was
Serving with Limitations stricken by polio, making him
unable to use his legs. But he compensated for that
Read: loss by devoting himself to his violin. In the years
Hebrews 11:8-19 that followed, he delighted multitudes of people with
his music. He lost the use of his legs but his music

made perfect in
weakness. —2 Some of God's servants have shown a similar
Corinthians 12:9 devotion to their Lord. They have suffered the loss of
certain abilities but have been inspired to develop
Bible in One Year: other capacities for service. For example, when
Numbers 7-10 William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army,
discovered that he was going blind, he did not
surrender to despair. With a positive outlook, he told
his colleagues that he had served Christ while he could see, and he would do his utmost
to serve Him even when blind.

What motivates Christians to keep on serving and following Jesus to the best of their
ability despite loss or hardship? Like Abraham, we live by faith. We look beyond this life
and wait "for the city . . . whose builder and maker is God" (Hebrews 11:10). It's "a better
. . . heavenly country" (v.16).

May the Holy Spirit empower us to glorify Christ—no matter what our limitations. —

In joy or sorrow Thy trust to keep;
And so through trouble, care, and strife,

Circumstances that imprison us cannot limit God's work through us.

V. Tips of the month

How to Repair a Whacked Out Network Interface Card

Most of us take our network interface cards for granted. There's a good reason for
that! Network interface cards (NICs) are very reliable and rarely fail. But sometimes
strange things can happen which prevent the NIC from working properly. If you find
your network connections aren't working quite right, then you might find the NIC
repair utility helpful. The repair utility is a lot faster than restarting the computer!

1. Click Start and then click Control Panel

2. In the Control Panel switch to Category view and click on the Network and
Internet Connections icon
3. On the Network and Internet Connections page, click on the Network
Connections icon
4. Right click on your Local Area Connection and click Repair. The Repair
Connection dialog box will appear and inform you that the Repair operation
has completed. Click OK.
Now try to get to the Internet or another computer on your network. Everything
should work OK. If not, restart the computer. You might have to find a computer
expert friend to help if restarting the computer doesn't help!

Machines Don't Show Up in My Network Places

I've heard from a lot of people who have problems with machine names not showing
up in the My Network Places or Network Neighborhood applet. There are a number of
causes for this, but the most common are: NetBIOS isn't enabled, or the Server
service (file and print services) isn't enabled on the interface. You can only disable
NetBIOS on Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers, but you can disable file and
print sharing on any Windows computer. On a Windows XP computer, perform the
following steps to check your setup:

1. Click Start and right click on My Network Places and click Properties.
2. In the Network Connections window, right click on your Local Area Connection
and click Properties.
3. On the General tab, find the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
entry. There should be a checkmark in the checkbox to the left of this entry if
you want your computer to show up in the My Network Places or Network
Neighborhood applet.
4. Scroll down to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entry and click on it. Then click
on the Properties button. On the Internet Properties (TCP/IP) Properties
dialog box, click the Advanced button.
5. In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box, click on the WINS tab. Make sure
that Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected.

If you have NetBIOS and the server service enabled (by enabling file and printer
sharing), then your computer should show up in the My Network Places or Network
Neighborhood.
