Appendix B Validation Cross Reference Index

Two methods of testing have been developed to represent the environment of specific
marketing regions (reference GMW8738). The following summarizes the intended
environment exposures:

Method SH/SM: Used for Severe – High exposures (Europe) and Severe – Moderate
exposures (Asia, North America)
Method SL: Used for Severe – Low exposures (Africa, Australia, Central America,
Middle East, and South America)

The following notes apply to all of the tables and testing methods below:
• The core/base laboratory test is GMW14872. Modifications to incorporate dynamic cycling or other inputs
should be seriously considered when those inputs will improve correlation to actual on-vehicle
performance. GM Corrosion Engineering can assist in cycle modification (also see GMW14872 for some
pre-defined modifications).
• GMW14101 is considered the generic corrosion-only road test procedure. Various testing facilities may
combine a durability test with the corrosion test, which would modify the procedure number. Therefore the
local equivalent test procedure may be substituted. However, the duration of corrosion test years cannot
be modified.
• Because different corrosion mechanisms are accelerated at different rates, end-of-test assessment to
perforation or functional corrosion resistance requirements requires review with GM Corrosion and/or
Materials Engineers if pitting or metal loss is observed. Lack of visible perforation or demonstration of part
function is NOT sufficient.
• Independent of the design of the part, the mechanism of galvanic corrosion has to be considered and must
be prevented, by specific design and/or material choice.
• Components delivered to the assembly plant shall be free of corrosion.
