Abstract: Mary Magdalene served and followed Jesus of Nazareth. She is the
woman mentioned in the Canonic Gospels. Her participation in the Gospels
afforded her the opportunity to become a hybrid character, a combination of
two other women. These facts and the apocryphal texts where she is shown
as the one who has the knowledge (gnosis), Jesus’ companion and other
attributes that raised jealousy on the other apostles were important for the
development of the basis of Gnosticism. This sect expanded with high intensity
and diversity during the first centuries of Christanism. The Church went up
against Gnostics in a very rigorous way and they were considered heretics. In
the middle of this clash of ideologies (that came into and end in the 4th century)
Mary Magdalene still allows various and different literary constructions.
Key-words: Mary Magdalene; Apocryphal; Gnosticism; Christianism.
