What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you learn on how to divide whole numbers by decimals up to 2 decimal places and
vice versa. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of
students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the steps in dividing decimals to whole number and vice versa
2. divide whole number by decimals up to 2 decimals places and vice versa

What I Know

You already have the knowledge in dividing whole numbers, but do you have
any idea on how to divide decimals to whole numbers and vice versa? Let’s find out.
Find the quotient of the following. Use a separate sheet of paper to answer this.

1. 4 13.6 2. 0.5 105 3. 7 8.4

4. 0.12 852 5. 9 22.5 6. 8 2.64

7. 0.24 648 8. 0.3 843 9. 6 13.8

10. 0.60 288

1
Well, how was it? Were you able to answer all the questions correctly?
If you did, then that’s excellent! You may skip this module. This shows that
you already know much about the topic.
But if you got 8-9, you must study the module to review what you
already know. Who knows, you might learn a few more new things as well.
If you got a low score, don’t feel bad. That means this module is meant
for you! It will help you understand important concepts that you can apply
in your daily life. If you study this module carefully, you will learn the
answers to the items in the test and a lot more! Are you ready?
You may now go to the next page and begin. I know you can do it!

Division of Decimals to Whole
Lesson
Number Up to 2 Decimal Places
1
and Vice Versa

As we go through this lesson, think of these questions. How do we

divide decimals to whole number and vice versa? What are the skills needed
in order to do it properly?

What’s In
Before we proceed with our lesson, let us test your knowledge/skill on
division of whole numbers.
Find the quotient.

1. 4 136 2. 5 105 3. 7 84

4. 2 84 5. 9 180 6. 12 144

7. 30 810 8. 6 264 9. 11 330

10. 8 9 672

Notes to the Teacher

The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in the
development of this competency including the schema or background
knowledge which may reinforce learning. This module will help the
learners bridge the gap of learning to attain mastery of the lesson in its
spiral progression.

What’s New

Read the problem below.

Have you been in a sari-sari store before? What did you buy? Shiela’s
mother owns a sari-sari store. Let us see how Shiela helps her mother in
their store. Let us help Shiela with her problem.

Shiela would like to pour 3.5 liters of cooking oil equally into 5 bottles.
How much cooking oil will be in each bottle?

Answer the following questions:

1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What are the given facts?
3. What is the operation to be used?
4. How are we going to write the number sentence?
5. What is your final answer?

What is It

Were you able to solve the problem? Let’s check on how the problem is
solved.
To solve the first problem, divide 3.5 by 5.
Number Sentence: 3.5 ÷ 5

Solution:
To divide a decimal by a whole number, just follow these steps:
Step 1. Place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the
decimal point.

.
5 3.5

Step 2: Divide as in whole numbers.

0.7
5 3.5
-3 5

4
Step 3. Insert zeros to the dividend when needed.
Note: In this problem, there’s no need to add zeros.

Here’s another example:

Divide 34.76 ÷ 5
1. Place the decimal point directly above the decimal point in the
dividend.

5 34.76

2. Divide as in whole numbers

Problem 2:
Ate Luz has a small sari-sari store. Every time she buys a 50-kilo
cavan of sugar, she repacks it into smaller bags weighing 0.25 kilo. How
many small plastic bags are needed by Ate Luz?

Answer the following questions:

1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What are the given facts?
3. What is the operation to be used?
4. How are we going to write the number sentence?
5. What is your final answer?

5
Let’s check on how the problem is solved. To solve the second problem,
just divide 50 by 0.25.
Number Sentence: 50 ÷ 0.25

Solution:
We follow the following steps when we divide a whole number by a
decimal.

Step 1. Count how many places we need to move the decimal to

the right in the divisor to create a whole number.

0.25 50

Note: There are two decimal places in the divisor.

Step 2. Move the decimal this many places to the right in both the
divisor and the dividend. This will require adding zeros to the end of
the dividend.

0.25 50 0 0

Note: Since there are two decimal places in the divisor, we have to move
two decimal places in our dividend, then add two zeros.

Step 3. You now divide as in whole numbers.

Let’s try this example:
Divide 84 ÷ 1.2
1. Count how many places we need to move the decimal to the
right in the divisor to create a whole number.

1.2 84

6
(Note: You need to move one decimal place to the right to create
a whole number in the divisor)

2. Move the decimal this many places to the right in both the
divisor and the dividend. This will require adding zeros to the
end of the dividend.

1.2 84 0

Note: Move one decimal place in both divisor and dividend.

3. You now divide as in whole numbers.

What I Have Learned

Do you now understand the steps in dividing decimals to whole

number and vice versa?
Let’s try this!
For items 1-4, complete the steps in dividing decimal to whole numbers by
supplying the missing words.
To divide a decimal to whole number, first place the decimal point
directly _______ the decimal point in the _______. Next, divide as in ________
numbers. Lastly, insert _______ to the dividend if needed.

For items 5-10, supply the missing words to complete the steps in dividing
whole numbers to decimal.

In dividing whole numbers to decimals, count how many decimal

places we need to ______ the decimal to the _______ in the divisor to create a
whole number. Next, move the decimal this many places to the right in both
the ______ and the ______. Then, add ______ to the end of the dividend.
Finally, ______ as whole numbers.

What I Can Do

You now know how to divide decimals to whole number and vice
versa. Apply what you have learned by solving the following problems.
Answer them using a separate sheet of paper.
1. Albert cut a bamboo 12.5 meters long. If he were to cut it into pieces 2
meters long, how many pieces of bamboo will there be?
2. How many pieces of cloth each 4 meters long can be cut from a 84.8
meter piece?
3. Lina has made 35 liters of preserves. She wants to put them in jars that
hold 2.5 liters each. How many jars does she need?
4. I have 125.50 meters of ribbon and want to cut it into pieces each 25
meters long. How many pieces can I cut from my ribbon?
5. Noel drove 324 km in 4.5 hours. What was his average speed for the ride?

Congratulations! You are now ready for an assessment!
