ED’S LETTER

NONTANDO58
NONTANDO58

The festive season’s here – and it’s time to celebrate!

In this issue of Glamour, we celebrate surviving the most turbulent year of the decade and pat ourselves
on the back for our accomplishments, big or small.  Inside this issue of Glamour, in our monthly series titled
‘Memoirs’, we feature several fitness and wellness professionals who offer expert advice to help you
prepare for the year ahead.  Highlights include our well-curated ‘Gift Guide’ to help you shop smart, holiday
entertainment, the latest summer fashion trends and the creative collaborations on our radar.
Our cover star, actress, human rights activist and television personality Nomzamo Mbatha, has a leading role
in Coming to America 2. The sequel of the popular 1988 film will premiere worldwide this December, placing her
on the global stage.  With seven years in the business, she’s established herself as a serious player in

the entertainment world and has acquired several endorsements deals with global brands. Now based in Los
Angeles, she’s a regular feature on the red carpet, as well as on stage hosting prominent awards and events. She
talks to Glamour about a young Nomzamo who had big dreams, how she’s surviving in a competitive industry
and being a humanitarian. We photographed the cover story in her hometown, Durban, where it all began.

Enjoy the read. Until next time.

FEELING LIKE YOU HAVE A BLOATED STOMACH
is normal.  There’s nothing wrong with experiencing minor

it’s usually temporary. Let’s all thank evolving fashion

“I think it’s important to differentiate the sensation of

says Dr Simon Hong a gastroenterologist specialising in
inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD) and clinical assistant

most people attribute to gas.” Distension, he explains, is a
noticeable difference in the size of your abdomen.
Feeling bloated for a few hours can be normal for many
reasons. Experiencing distension alongside that sensation can
be normal too. But if your abdomen is physically distended and

it affirmed that the only constant thing in life is

and ask ourselves difficult questions: Who did I miss during
the lockdown, and why? What did I miss? What did I learn to
live without? Your answers will give you a good idea as to what
you value in life, says Joburg-based life coach, Sharon Piel, who
further notes that 2020 was a year of clarity for most people.
You may be entering the new year with a newfound respect for
things you may have taken for granted before the pandemic,
or perhaps you’ve realised there are things you need to leave
behind, such as toxic patterns, environments or even people. If
you’re wondering how you can reinvent yourself and cultivate
a positive outlook in the new year, Sharon offers the following
advice.

Surround yourself with positive energy

It’s OK to feel despondent considering everything that’s
happened this year. To avoid carrying negative energy into the
new year, try to focus on the present and surround yourself
with positive energy. Now, more than ever, you must surround
yourself with people who bring out the best in you, are a
positive influence, support you and your goals and have your
best interests at heart.

Seek out new opportunities

If you’re working in a toxic environment, for example, starting
over could mean finding another job, or thinking of creative
ways to earn an income to put food on the table. If you look
around, you might even be able to identify gaps in the market
and start your own business. Working from home may be a
blessing for some, but for others, a controlling boss who tries
to micro-manage his or her employees may leave you feeling
discouraged and disengaged. Perhaps it’s time to look at other
opportunities such as consulting or becoming an entrepreneur.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

opportunity to rewrite your story on your terms?
