1. Why is cloze test necessary in determining the effectiveness of a material? (10pts)

ANSWER:

Cloze Test is necessary in determining the effectiveness of a material because it assess


the conceptual difficulty, language variability and readability of reading materials. It also tests
whether the students are capable to understand and comprehend the reading materials they
are presented to. Furthermore, through this test, the students will have a room for development
and improvement of their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Failure to recognize the
effectiveness of material used for instruction per se, may lead to confusion and slow-paced
learning to students resulting to failure in imparting the needed knowledge and skills to them. If
instructors know the level of comprehension and vocabulary his/her students have, he/she can
determine the right materials necessary and suitable for their learning and, at the same time,
cover their interests and standards.

2. What are the two main Reading Program in evaluating a reading material? Define each on your
own understanding. (40 pts)

ANSWER:

The two main Reading Program in evaluating material are called the “interventionist”
programs and one which is not concerned entirely with giving deliberate instruction.
Interventionist programs are those programs which stimulates the development and use of
efficient meaning-getting strategies in reading. This kind of programs focuses on developing
students’ ability to read, write, decode, comprehend, and predict through the use of tests and
methods which assess specific strategies used in choosing reading materials through actual
practice of reading. These programs aim to create confident readers and writers considering
their different rates of learning.
The other program focuses on finding appropriate text/reading materials and
determining whether goals and required reading skills are met by students. This program aims
to identify which texts are suitable for their readers in response to their ability to understand
and comprehend and their interests. It concentrates on maximizing reading resources while
striking a balance between too simple and too complex reading materials. This program
considers the vocabulary, syntax, and semantics of reading materials, thus, giving instructors the
ability to choose reading materials that are not cognitively demanding that its difficulty hinders
the ability of students to comprehend while allowing the students to enjoy and to be deeply
interested with reading.
