NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator

Product Description
N E T H AW K R N C/ I U B S I M U L ATO R

NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator is an advanced UMTS tester for

several groups of advanced users:

> Development teams test HSDPA implementations of the NodeB.

> Production engineers minimize the number of faulty NodeBs coming out from the
factory.

> Operators verify the transmitter and receiver characteristics of NodeB during
network acceptance.

> Product sales and marketing teams demonstrate the new NodeB features to the
end users.

1. NodeB HSDPA testing in product development

The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator supports 3GPP R5 NBAP and HS-DSCH frame protocol specifications
required to test HSDPA connections. The test cases can be incrementally developed by using flexible
JScript language and NetHawk Simulator methods.

The Simulator emulates physical and link layers in Iub interface up to the RLC and SSCOP. Test scripts
take care of the ALCAP and NBAP signaling using the encoding and decoding libraries. Test scripts can
utilize the NetHawk BER Tester to send a PN9 sequence or user defined fixed bit pattern as a payload
for the HS-DSCH channel.

Development and testing of the NodeB HSDPA proceeds incrementally step by step:

1. The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator sends fixed pattern user plane data with a fixed data rate to the
HS-DSCH.
2. The NodeB sends HS-DSCH capacity allocation messages to the NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator. The
Simulator reacts automatically to this request and starts sending user plane data to the HS-DSCH at
requested data rate.
3. The Simulator sets ups HS-DSCH channels using NBAP commands without any NodeB management
tools.
4. Testing the HS-DSCH channel with different kind on configuration parameters.

2. NodeB testing in production by automated test sequences

The RNC/Iub Simulator supports running automated test cases for the NodeB testing during production
phase.

The user can build test sequences with the NetHawk Script Builder. It includes libraries for user interface
elements (HTML), JScript and for the NetHawk Simulator methods that makes script development easier
and eliminates syntax errors in function calls.

The NetHawk BER Tester is used for verifying the correct bit flow to/from the NodeB. It includes the
BER, FER and BLER measurements and statistics. It generates, sends and receives bit patterns over
the Iub and possibly over the Uu interfaces. It calculates the BER and stores the BER, BLER and FER. All
these measurements and statistics can be controlled by a remotely running script. All the measurement
information and statistics can be sent to a file or user interface.

The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator follows the 3GPP specification levels continuously. Consulting,
configuration and training will give a kick-start for the production tests.

3. NodeB acceptance testing

The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator includes an optional automatic ready-to-run test cases for test models
(TM) and reference measurement channels (RMC) defined in the 3GPP 25.141 NodeB conformance test
specification

The conformance test environment used in NodeB acceptance requires a third party RF equipment for
WCDMA air interface spectrum analysis and uplink data generation.

The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator operates in the role of the RNC in the Iub interface, the RF equipment
measures the physical channel characteristics and sends a PN9 sequence in the uplink direction over the
Uu interface. The Simulator monitors the quality of the uplink channel.

Product concept

The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator consists of advanced PC software and a NetHawk hardware Adapter.
The NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator software runs in a standard Windows® environment.

The Simulator has a modular software structure. You can obtain software updates and new product
components according to your needs. NetHawk has an easy-to-use graphical user interface.

The NetHawk hardware Adapter provides a physical connection to a network element. There are
adapters for E1, T1, JT1, STM-1 and OC-3 network interfaces.

Product architecture and components

The main components of the Simulator product architecture are a Simulator user interface, a DCOM
interface, a Simulator protocol engine, a 3G Monitoring window and a hardware adapter. The 3G
Monitoring window offers the user decoded and analysed signalling in real time. The protocol engine
implements the protocol layers of the supported protocol stacks. The NetHawk Adapter can be chosen
according to the physical interface, e.g. E1 or STM-1. Applications can send and receive data on radio
bearers via UDP sockets.

The protocol engine consists of link layer service and a protocol core. The protocol core contains ready-
to-run, multi-connection-capable implementation of the protocol entities above the link layer. The link
layer and core autonomously respond to incoming signaling.

The Simulator user interface features message sending and call status. By using the Simulator’s Watch
dialog box the user can modify, filter or delete incoming or outgoing messages. With the Watch the user
can also wait for uplink message which triggers user defined functions. For example, the figure below
shows a watch for NBAP radio link setup response message which can trigger automatically ALCAP
establish request for this channel.

The user can follow the test execution from the NetHawk 3G Monitoring window. User can see for
example all the HS-DSCH FP messages. The Simulator’s console window can be used for monitoring the
protocol engine of the Simulator.

NetHawk’s Simulator solution for product development includes scripting and test specification support,
and consulting services as well. Moreover, to ensure a smooth kick-start the configuration and training
services are included.

NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator User Interface

Script Builder is a visual tool for creating and modifying test scripts. NetHawk RNC/Iub Simulator
contains a set of scripts for common procedures. User can create or modify scripts for their own test
purposes.

The user interface of the scripts is implemented with HTML. The controlling part of the scripts is
implemented with JScript or VBScript.
NetHawk Script Builder and the simulation user interface utilise the Microsoft Internet Explorer web
browser and its scripting features. Thus, DHTML and ActiveX controls can also be used in addition to
HTML to create script user interfaces.

3G Monitoring decodes and analyses signalling protocols in various formats, levels of details and coding
options. Statistics information about traffic is collected simultaneously with analysis. 3G Monitoring can
also record traffic into trace files stored on the PC hard disk for later analysis. All the trace files are fully
compatible with the 3G NetHawk Analyser.

NetHawk 3G Monitoring also contains a powerful and easy-to-use environment for setting up filters
and triggering different actions. Specified events or messages are awaited and when encountered,
a selected action is performed. Online help in using 3G Monitoring as well as comprehensive online
protocol descriptions are always available.
