8. Actors need to know how to use their voice in different ways. This means they need to
work on their vocal tone, their pitch, projection, volume, rhythm, and phrasing. It is
important to articulate, especially in the time of masks. Let’s go over what these things
mean:
a. Vocal tone: distinguishes your voice from other voices.
i. Clear tones result from a relaxed, open throat. Use your hands to
massage your throat and help it relax.
b. Pitch: the highness or lowness of your voice. Everyone has a different range and
you can extend your range by doing exercises like singing and sirens.
i. Say the word “oh” with different inflections. (that hurts, lovely, so what,
perhaps, look out, dont be so rude, you expect me to believe that?)
c. Projection and volume: varying volume means different things. You should be
able to hear every bit of dialogue.
i. I want to be a lumberjack
d. Rhythm and phrasing: speaking in a specific rhythm can help us to understand
the context of what we are reading.
“Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;”
