Job Description – Volunteer Coordinator

Black Star Development NGO (BSD) and Sandshoe will collaborate and initiate
programs that combine surfing with volunteering so that guests will both learn to surf
and be able to give back to the host country and village in a meaningful way. Apart from
being an avenue for learning surfing, the programs is also a platform for intercultural
exchanges, responsible tourism and sustainable community development as these are
part of the missions of both Sandshoe and BSD.

BSD is looking for a Volunteer Coordinator with the objective to set up a sustainable
structure for development of surf volunteer programs in the Busua area. This is a great
opportunity for you to learn more and get a closer look of the African culture and day-
to-day life. The Volunteer Coordinator will work under the supervision of the BSD
management.

Role and duties:


The primary duty is to set up a structure of routines and procedures so BSD can develop surf volunteer
programs based on the needs of the communities. In addition, a very important part is to pick and train a
local person to assume the Volunteer Coordinator position once the one year contract is completed. The
role of Volunteer Coordinator involves working closely with the BSD management.

Other responsibilities:
 Set up routines and procedures for community diagnostics so to get input of needs.
 Regularly meetings with the relevant local committees and clubs.
 Prioritize needs and projects.
 Set up, budget, follow-up and evaluate volunteer programs.
 Provide expense reports of the volunteer programs for price setting.
 Establish procedures for choosing host families.
 Prepare annual budget and plan of operations.
 Produce publication or printed materials intended for public distribution.
 Regular follow-ups, reports and documentation of the community projects.

Skills & qualifications required:


 Relevant academic education.
 Experience in NGOs, development work and volunteer management is essential.
 Good knowledge of English is essential.
 Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Photoshop.

Qualities:
 Ability to be a self-starter and complete tasks/projects within deadlines.
 Highly motivated and prepared to go the extra mile.
 Strong social skills for handling cultural differences.
 Experience in marketing and familiar with the sport of surfing would be an advantage.

This position will require you to live in Busua for a period of one year with start as soon as possible.
Working hours are normal office hours on weekdays. It might require work on weekends. The volunteer
will be provided a round trip airfare to Ghana, a stipend of $USD 1000 plus accommodation and three
meals a day during the whole one year assignment.
