1. Greenpeace is leading a campaign to slow down global warming.

2. Solar panels provide us with an efficient renewable source of energy.
3. Most of the Earth’s surface is covered with water.
4. At our school everyone uses recycled paper.
5. Oil spills are potentially harmful to the sea species.
6. The vessel Reno containing oil slicks sank in October 2011 in New Zealand.
7. Preserving the tropical rainforest is crucial for the balance of the Earth ecosystems.
8. Promoting the use of renewable power sources can prevent the destruction of the balance of
ecosystems.
9. Overpopulation is leading us to cut down trees to make room for people.
10. The greenhouse effect is caused by gases thrown into the earth’s atmosphere and get trapped in
there.
11. When tanks sink near the coast, poisonous chemicals always kill birds and fish and pollute
beaches.
12. Aerosol use has partly destroyed the ozone layer, which protects us from the sun rays.

Earth – eruption- environment- toxic – earthquakes – tsunamis – damage – explosion –

global- volcanic- mudflows.

Volcanic eruptions can have massive effects on a global as well as local scale. For
example, the eruption of Krakatau, a small environment island in south western Indonesia,
in 1883 discharged ash up to 80 k m high, which enriched the damage within two weeks,
leading to a fall in solar radiation at ground level and spectacular sunsets for several years.
Volcanoes vary greatly in the frequency of volcanic earthquakes, with 20 percent erupting
less than once every 100 years and 2 percent less than once every 10,000 years. Damage to
the Earth arises not only from lava and tsunamis, but also from deposition of ash and the
release of toxic gases. Another major hazard produced by explosion and volcanic Pupations
are mudflows, enormous waves that reach maximum height near the shore where they can
cause massive and loss of life.
Task 2: Look at the pictures and fill in the blanks with for in the list below:

Atmosphere – activity- gas- burning- planet – heat – warming – greenhouse.

Global warming is the increase in the overage temperature of the atmosphere, oceans, and
land masses of Earth. The planet has warmed many times during the 4.65 billion years of its
history. At present Earth is facing a rapid warming which most scientists be believe results,
at least, in part, from human activity the chief cause of this warming is thought to be the
burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, and natural gas, which releases into the atmosphere
carbon dioxide and other substances known as greenhouse gases. As the atmosphere
becomes richer in these gases, it becomes a better insulator, retaining more of the heat which
reaches Earth and is provided to the planet by the Sun.
