Vocabulary Strategy Awareness & Explanation (Purpose for selecting the strategy)
How will provide students with a clear picture of the why and how?
● use in conjunction with elements of literature/novel study
● these two words will need to be clarified during this unit,
● all characters will be classified by archetype
● the protagonist identified and examined
● Introduction steps for understanding the main elements of literature.
● Make connections to other literary terms with the same root words(Antagonist,
patriarch, matriarch, etc.)

Vocabulary Strategy Procedure-the “how-to”

Detail how you will introduce the vocabulary concept rooted in Latin/Greek roots, how you will propel
understanding of the generative use of these roots, and finally, how you will establish the proficiency of
the objective through an effective closing that can be assessed.
● Connect root word to Cultural Identity concept- Who am I?
● Explore word families, country of origin, migration through language
● Explore a different way to map identity-mind map concept-
● Draw mind map frame/show mind map divided paper-ask what ways can we
explore the identity of the word?
● Work as a class- guide the labeling of each box of the mind map
● Allow students to work in groups to research and record examples for each
section.
● Have a gallery walk and sticky note(put your name on the back of the sticky note)
feedback for peers.
● Maps and sticky notes used as assessment

Peer Reflection: Enlist your partner in assessing your vocabulary activity in depth. Reflect on their
assessment before implementing the activity in your digital learning experience. (optional
implementation) They will be looking at a few factors:

1. A discipline-specific topic is identified and a clear and creative vocabulary activity is

created for one or two Latin or Greek roots.
2. The activity builds generative knowledge and allows the student to think critically about
the words.
Have your peer write a 1-2 paragraph detailed reflection about your strategy based on their own self-
assessment. (Please ask them to be honest as any critiques should be welcomed and reciprocated.
Additionally, your assessment does not impact their grade.)
● How did the structure of this strategy support learning in their discipline specifically?
● What were their strengths and areas for growth (please consider both their planning and your
instruction of the strategy).

The structure of the strategy supports learning in English specifically through the use of literature or a
novel analysis. A novel will be used to classify characters into archetypes and then identify and
examine the protagonist. By using the information of the novel to create an understanding of each
word before exploring the word, students are able to identify what each word may mean before being
exposed to the word. I think this will really help the students understand the words before they do any
type of exploring. In addition, the students will be doing a concept map and relating the idea to the
topic “Who Am I?” and exploring root words in the process.

I think that the students will be able to get a strong understanding of the words that are being studied
here. I think the students are getting a really strong background of those words. I also think that the
students will get a lot of help to understand their mind map, as well as the words. The group work will
help students to brainstorm together and facilitate success. The only way that I could see this growing
is being able to identify a specific literature or novel to use to facilitate this learning and perhaps some
example, as well as a further explanation for what the gallery walk and sticky note purpose would be
for the lesson.
