Rational Expressions

p
A rational expression is an expression of the form ,
Q
where P and Q are polynomials, with Q ≠ 0.

2x3 − 7 x
Example: Is a rational expression because the top and bottom are polynomials.
5x 4 − 8x 2

− 2 x −8 − 7 x
Example: Is not because of the negative power and the square root.
5x 4 − 8x

What makes a rational expression undefined?

A rational expression is undefined when the denominator is equal to zero. To find the
values that make a rational expression undefined, set the denominator equal to zero and
solve the resulting equation.

2x3 − 7x
Example: Is undefined because the zero is in the denominator.
0

2 x 2 + x − 10
Write the rational expression in lowest terms:
6 x + 15

(2 x + 5)( x − 2)
o Factor the numerator ⇒
6 x + 15

(2 x + 5)( x − 2)
o Factor the denominator ⇒
3(2 x + 5)

(2 x + 5)( x − 2) ( x − 2) x−2
o Divide out common factors ⇒ = =
3(2 x + 5) 3 3
