City of Frontenac, Miscoure POLICE DEPARTMENT 10555 Clayton Road, Frontenac, Missouri - 314-994-9300 Response to Request for Information February, 2011 ‘The St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s office has released their report on the sudden death of Adrienne Martin at the home of August Busch IV on December 19, 2010. The cause of death is listed as “Oxycodone intoxication”, and the manner of death is listed as “Accident.” The Medical Examiner’s toxicology report shows levels of cocaine and oxycodone in Ms. Martin’s system. Any questions about the Medical Examiner's report should be addressed to the St, Louis County Medical Examiner, In response to multiple requests under the Missouri public records statutes we are able to make the attached documents available to those who requested them. The materials include the Frontenae Police Department Sudden Death report of this incident, with supplemental reports, No additional documents ate available for release at this time, or for the indefinite future. ‘This Department will continue to investigate any suspected illegal conduct, including the presence of any illegal drugs in Ms. Martin's system or surroundings, for as long as necessary. ‘Throughout this investigation our Department has maintained close coordination with the office of the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attomey, Mr. Robert McCulloch, and ‘we appreciate his cooperation and assistance, ‘The decision whether to file or pursue any charges arising out of this incident, as in any other incident, rests exclusively with the Prosecuting Attorney. MATRIN, white female age of 27 years. The deceased mother had been made aware of the deceased death by the Frontenac Police. | attived on the scene which was located in a residential neighborhood. On the scene | was met by several ofcers of the Frontenac Police Department. | was [ed to the deceased who was located in the northeast bedroom on the first floor. There | observed the deceased lying supine on the bed on top of the covers. Her head was resting on several pillows. The deceased was clothed in one black sock on her left foot, pants, t-shirt and a Jacket. In the right jacket pocket was a straw which was covered in a white residue. ‘The deceased was warm to the touch. Rigor mortis was absent from the body. Livor mortis was lightly observed on the left side of her face. No injuries were observed on the deceased. At this facility at 1600 hours the deceased liver temperature was measured at 96°F, The residence were she was discovered at was approximately 70° F, ‘The deceased was a guest in the residence and was with Mr. AUGUTST BUSH IV, and he reported that they were drinking most of the ‘evening and at approximately 0330 hours they both fell asleep on the bed. He woke up at 1145 hours and she was sill n the bed and appeared to be asleep. He went to the kitchen and made a breakfast shake, then he made her one and went back into the room at approximately 1280 hours and at this time he found her unresponsive in bed. The extremities are normally formed, The scalp hair is brown and worn long. The skin and soft tissues of the orbits ceunrematkable, ‘The conjanetivae end sclerae are unremarkable, The irides are hazel-gray. The external aspect of the nose shows no significant abnormalities. ‘There is some slight drying of the skin at the upper piultrum and adjacent nasal septum; however, no antemortem injuries are identified, There is @ round chronic perforation of the distal nasal septum thet is approximately 6 mm in diameter, The edges ofthe defect ae ined by sof gray-white mucosa that is somewhat friable. The lips, cheeks, gums, dentition and oral cavity are veremarkable, No lesions are seen on the external or cut surfaces of the tongue, The cars are pierced, The breasts are prominent due to the presence of implants. The genitalia is untentarkable. The puble hair, for the most part, Has been shaved. Some residual pubic hair is present in the superior midline. No lymphadenopathy is identified. I told her about post- streptococceal GN and begged her to see a Doc. She said she would ifit didn't go away..she never did because the swelling was gone the next day. After that she developed chronic diarrea that she never sought treatment for and I believe it had not resolved at the time of her death, The last several weeks before she died she was very fatigued, but couldn't sleep, Every time I talked to her she sounded like she was wore out. She was very busy T know, changing apartments, jobs and getting ready for Christmas, The new job was very demanding and she ‘was a perfectionist so I'm certain she was living on very little sleep. Busch was standing in the patlo doorway motioning for me to follow him. Busch stated, "She was in the bedroom and she was not breathing". | followed Busch to the master bedroom located on the west side of the main floor. On the bed | observed a white female, identified as Adrienne Martin, laying on her back. Martin lay motionless and appeared lifeless. There were also numerous half-full and nearly full bottles of Gatorade sitting on the nightstand located on the right side of the bed, Also on the nightstand | observed two plastic cups with what appeared to be melted chocolate shakes and a glass of red wine, Although the room was cluttered and in disarray I did not see any signs of a struggle. Busch stated that he and Martin had a relationship and she often spent the night. He added he had awakened at approximately three a.m, next to Martin and saw that she was awake but "kind of groggy". He stated he went back to sleep and did not wake up until around 1:00 p.m. He said he got out of bed, went to the kitchen, and made {wo protein shakes, one for each of them. He returned to the bedroom with the shakes and tried fo wake her up, When he was unable to wake her he ran back to the kitchen and summoned his domestic employee, Michael Jung. Busch added they both went back to the room and tried to revive Martin but were unsuccessful, Busch stated Jung then dialed 9-1-1, I contacted Jung, who stated he is a domestic employee of August A. Busch IV. He stated he arrived at the residence around 12:30 p.m, and started his domestic duties, He stated that at approximately 1:00 p.m. Busch came out of his bedroom to the kitchen where he made a protein shake, He said he then went out to the rear patio and, after a few minutes, Busch came out and told him that he could not wake up Adrienne. They both went to the bedroom to try to wake her up. Jung stated that neither him nor Busch moved Martin very much or repositioned her body. Busch stated that, fo his knowledge, Martin was not on any prescriptions or using any illegal drugs. He said she did not complain of an illness or appear to be sick in the previous couple of days. He added that he was unaware If she was cutrently being treated by a physician for any medical feasons and was unable to provide any information regarding Martin's medical history. Detective Ford and Detective Mathew Brune, 236, responded and processed the scene. Det, Ford later further interviewed Busch in the presence of his attorney, Arthur Margulis, regarding the incident, the details of which will be supplemented by Ford, | contacted the St. Louls County Medical Examiner's office and advised them of the circumstances. Forensic Investigator Wendell Payne responded and took possession of Martin's body per M.E. Lindbergh for a report of a Sudden Death. | arrived and met with Sgt. Tim Bamett, 232, Cpl. Rob Scronce, 240, and Officer Mike Barron, 221. Also inside the residence was homeowner August A. Busch IV, his attorney Art Margulis, and Busch's employee Mike Jung. Cpl. Scronce directed me to the master bedroom, on the main floor on the west end of residence. | observed a white female, Adrienne Martin, lying on the left side of the bed. Martin was fully clothed and lying on top of a tan electric blanket which was unplugged. Underneath the blanket were two light green bed sheets. Near the head of Martin were three Pillows, one brown and two light green, Also lying on top of the bed, tothe right of Martin, were numerous items: a laptop computer, a pair of Scissors, a flashlight, an electronics magazine, a clear plastic box containing a FLPR Ipod remote and a white plastic case. Attached to the footboard bed posts were two flat screen televisions. The entire room appeared to be in disarray. Items were lying throughout the room in no identifiable Pattern. The items scattered in the room were: electronic devices, powercords, televisions, remote controls, gatorade bottles, two cups of brown liquid (described as protein shakes), weapons, ammunition, radios, speakers, shoes, a watch, tools, flashlights, and a blanket. Photographs were taken of the entire room and the contents, Photographs were also taken of the master bathroom which was in equal disarray, Inside the master bathroom, which is attached to, and directly North of the bedroom are {wo sinks and countertops. One on the East and one on the West side of the bathroom. Each counter top was crowded with bathroom products: toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, deodorant, cologne, ect, However, these counter tops were cluttered with electronic devices, plugs, cords, walkie-talkies, phones, flashlights, remote controls and radios. Also in the bathroom was a large bathtub, and two televisions. There was approximately 1 inch of water in the bottom of the bathtub. Next to the bathtub was a small toilet room. Sitting on top of a wooden chest near a large flat screen television were three prescription pill bottles, each with the name, Martin, Adrienne, One bottle was prescribed by Dr. K. Martin, dated 11/27/2010 and distributed by Walgreens Pharmacy, for Sulfameth/Trimethoprim 800/160 Tabs, with 2 quantity of 20. This bottle contained zero pills, however the inside of the bottle was covered with white powder residue. A second bottle was prescribed by Dr. Blake Anderson, unclear date, and distributed by Crider Health Genter Pharmacy, for Lexapro with a quantity of 30. This bottle contained zero pills, however the inside of the bottle was covered with a white powder residue, A third bottle was prescribed by Dr. L. Dupis NP/ Dr. B. Anderson, dated 11/04/2010, and distributed by Schnucks Pharmacy, for Trazodone 100mg, with a quantity of 30. This bottle contained five white pills labeled Pliva 434, a half pill labeled 434 A, and three pieces of an unknown white pil These botties were photographed, seized, packaged and placed into evidence, The bottles were later conveyed to the St, Louis County Crime Lab for analysis on the white powder and pills When the Medical Examiner's Office Forensic Investigator Wendell Payne began inspecting Martin, they rolled her further onto her left side to inspect her back area, Observed on the green sheet Martin was lying on were six dried blood spots. Each dried spot appeared to have been wiped off, Both green sheet were seized, packaged and placed into evidence, Also lying near Martin, was one white sock. This sock was seized, packaged, and placed into evidence. The tan electtic blanket was seized, packaged, and placed into evidence. Also observed on Martin's left wrist was a silver and diamond Brietling watch. The watch was stopped with the time showing 5:35:08, ‘The watch was photographed but remained with Martin, While inspecting other areas of the bed, we lifted the top mattress to look between the mattress and box spring. Undemeath Martin, between the mattress and box spring was a white plastic straw approximately 2.75 inches in length. Lindbergh, | approached the homeowner, August Busch IV, and his attorney Art Margulis, and requested that Busch speak with me. Margulis advised me he would allow Busch to make a statement and answer limited questions. | presented Busch with a Frontenac Police Advisement of Rights Form. | advised Busch of his rights to which he stated he understood. He then signed the form, as did Margulis and myself. The Advisement of Rights form was seized, packaged, and later placed into evidence. asked Busch how he knew Adrienne Martin and for how long. He stated that they had been dating on and off for approximately one and one half years, and that she often stayed at his house and the two shared a bed. However, Busch advised me that Adrienne had left the residence on Saturday, December 18th, in the afternoon for a couple hours: Upon her return she did not again leave the residence. Busch stated he and Adrienne ate dinner, steak, in the evening, but Adrienne did not eat very much, Busch advised me that Adrienne had not felt well recently and "looked bad," that evening. Busch stated he was tired and went to bed around 6:00 pm on December 18th. Adrienne stayed up and was out in the TV area, on the couch near the kitchen. Busch stated he was not sleeping well and was up and down for several hours. Busch said that he asked Adrienne to come to bed numerous times but she refused and stayed up. Shortly after 2:00 am Busch convinced Adrienne to get into bed. Busch also got into bed and went to’sleep. At approximately 12:30 pm on Sunday, December 19, Busch awoke when his employee, Mike Jung, arrived and entered the residence. O'Neil advised that the apartment looked exactly as it had on 12/20/2010. Before leaving O'Neil noticed that 2 windows were unlocked. O'Neil stated that she locked the windows before securing the tesidence. O'Neil advised that she cannot release any of the property located inside the residence without a Power Of Attorney. | asked O'Neil if she would grant me permission to search the apartment, and O'Neil advised that would be "no problem." On 12/30/2010, | responded to New Town St. Charles, and met with Connie O'Neil. O'Neil signed a Consent To Search Residence Form, for 3414 A E Lime Kiln, which was witnessed by me, and Detective James Ford DSN 237, then escorted us to 3414 A E Lime Kiln where we began a search of the apartment (see attached copy of Consent To Search Form-Residence). O'Neil and her Maintenance Supervisor were present the entire time myself and Detective Ford searched the apartment. In the master bedroom area of the apartment Detective Ford found 3 pill bottles. The first pill bottle contained pink pills, the second bottle (which was issued to Kevin Martin) contained 10 purple pills, and 1 white oval pill, and the third bottle was empty but contained a white powder residue. The botties were seized by Detective Ford as evidence, and will be delivered to the St. Louis County Police Crime Lab at a later date for analysis. Detective Ford photographed the exact location the bottles were found with a digital camera, These photographs were downloaded onto the Detective! Bureau Computer, then placed onto a compact disc, which was properly marked, packaged, and placed into evidence. K Martin advised that he and Adrienne had a good relationship and were often in contact with one another because of their son K Martin advised that the last time he remembered seeing Adrienne was approximately 1 week prior to. going fo Springfield Missouri tovisit relatives. K Martin advised that the last time he remembered speaking to Adrienne was the Thursday or Friday before she died. K Martin advised that he would try and contact Adrienne at various times on her cellular phone including early in the morning, and late at night as Adrienne was keeping odd hours and was becoming increasingly hard to get in touch with over the last few weeks before her death. K Martin advised that he was notified of Adrienne's death on December 19, 2010, by August Busch IV. K Martin stated that Busch called him from Adrienne's cellular phone. K Martin advised that Adrienne told him she was having a difficult time sleeping. K Martin stated that shortly after he and Adrienne were married, they were at the Doctors Office where he worked, and Adrienne inquired about the EKG machine, and asked K Martin if he could run iton her. K Martin stated that he did, and it showed that Adrienne had a possible prolonged QT. K Martin advised that he was only made aware of Adrienne's use of Trazadone after her death, by August Busch IV, On 01/04/2011, at approximately 11:48AM, | advised K Martin of his constitutional rights per the miranda decision, at which time K Martin advised that he understood his rights, and agreed to answer questions, and make statements (see attached copy of Advisement of Rights Form). K Martin was then asked if he prescribed any drugs to either August Busch IV or Adrienne, to which he tesponded that approximately 1 month prior he prescribed Bactrum to August and Adrienne as Adrienne had an infection on her back, and August had one on his foot. K Martin advised that both infections went away, K Martin advised that Adrienne asked him if he would write her a prescription for the generic form of Lexapro so she could try it, and he complied. K Martin stated that after trying it briefly, Adrienne told him she did not like it and switched back to Lexapro. K Martin advised that he prescribed Adrienne different medicines throughout their marrlage, but never any controlled substances, K Martin further stated that he also has never prescribed controlled substances to August Busch IV. K Martin-advised that August Busch IV asked him to prescribe a sleeping pill once, but K Martin told hirh that he could not do so because he was not August's doctor, K Martin advised that August Busch IV told him that he understood, and advised K Martin that he was a good guy. K Martin was asked If he ever witnessed or knew of Adrienne using any illegal drugs, and K Martin advised that he did not. K Martin stated he would be shocked if it was determined that Adrienne used illegal drugs. K Martin gave permission to look through his cellular phone, however I did not find anything pertaining to this case, as K Martin stated he frequently deletes voice mail and text messages shortly after he-gets them. K Martin was asked about his relationship with August Busch IV, and K Martin advised that they were very friendly, almost like brothers. K Martin advised that he was over at August Busch's house the previous evening so that August could visit his son K Martin stated that August Busch IV told him that he thinks God is punishing him for what happened to the girl in Arizona. K Martin advised that he is worried as August appears to be somewhat depressed. K Martin advised that he does not think August's depression is as serious as August's family seems to think. K Martin stated that he plans on taking to visit August Busch IV in the future. On 12/20/2010, at approximately 14:30, Detective Matt Brune, 236, and | responded to the St. Louis County Medical Examiners Office for the Post Mortem Examination of Adrienne N. Martin. Upon arrival we met with St, Louis County Medical Examiner, Dr. Michael Graham. He advised us that he would be performing the examination. As Dr. Graham examined the body of Martin he found no signs of trauma, While looking at her face area (eyes, mouth, nose) Dr. Graham identified a hole in the septum of her nose, Dr. Graham requested | photograph the nose, in particular, the hole. Dr. Graham held back the nostrils allowing light into the area. | took numerous photographs of the nose. Including one photograph where Dr. Graham inserted a surgical tool into one nostril, through the hole in the septum, then through the other nostril. When asked why Adrienne Martin would have a hole in her septum, Dr. Graham statéd the cause could come from Martin snorting a large amount of narcotics over a long period of timie. Dr. Graham examined the rest of the body to include the internal organs. He also drew blood and urine samples from the body for toxicology tests. Upon conclusion of the examiriation Dr. Graham stated he did not find ar apparent cause of death and did not estimate a time of death. He stated final results would have to wait until toxicology results are finalized and the pathologist has finished his examination. Photographs taken during the examination were downloaded onto the Frontenac Detective Bureau computer, then burned to a disc which was packaged and placed into evidence. On 01/12/2011, | was contacted by the attorney for August Busch IV, Art Margulis. | had contacted Margulis one week earlier and requested an interview with he and Busch. Margulis explained to me that he is advising Busch to not speak with me or any Frontenac Police Officer. He also advised that Busch will make no further statements regarding the death of Adrienne Martin, Any further will follow in the usual manner.
